@@Mint Drop, Shadow Star stepped a little closer to the filly so she could whisper in her ear. "Don't worry yourself about it," she whispered. "I'll find a way to tell them, you shouldn't have to. Just think of how good it'll be to finally get out of this place! You could come home with me, if you like."

Sunset was surprised when she heard the mare whisper to her.

"I-I stopped thinking optimistically a long time ago... b-before I even came here... b-b-but me? c-come to... to y-your place?? A-are you s-s-sure? I-I'd probably b-be a bother, I-I-I don't want to i-impose..."

She shuffled nervously. While this mare did seem to honestly care for her, she was afraid. She was afraid Shadow Star would grow to dislike her, or she would be a bother to the mare.

@@Mint Drop, "It wouldn't be an imposition," Shadow Star whispered. "While I can't lay claim to being the best mother in the world, I can at least care for a poor homeless foal like yourself. I would hate to see you simply put in an orphanage when there is a viable alternative."

Sunset shuffled her hooves nervously. She wasn't sure how to react to such kindness; all she had ever really known was pain and cruelty. Sure, the original workers were hie, but that was their job, and they had pitied her.

She could only hope this was out of true kindness, not pity.

"I-if you're sure..." she mumbled. "...Th-thank you..."

@@Mint Drop, "I'm sure," Shadow Star replied. Her offer was indeed made out of kindness; now that there was a glimmer of hope, even such a small one, that they would one day escape the village, she could not bear to think of the poor foal suffering more by being homeless and alone. Hadn't she suffered enough? Worse than anypony else had suffered.

"O-okay..." Sunset murmured, still unsure. "Th-thank you... I-" 

She cut herself off there. She had been about to say she had never had a mother, but realized it and stopped herself.

Oh, just tell her... She'll be curious and it would come out sooner or later anyway.... You don't eve have to say "mother, just say proper home...

"I, u-um... I-i've never had a r-real home before..."

"Then this shall be the first," Shadow Star smiled. "In a  way, it's good cuz I'm not so sure that I was a very good mother to my son, so comparisons won't be made. I'll do a much better job this time round, I promise." Shadow Star then hugged the poor little foal to her.
