Grammar importance

On the internet, the use of grammar and spelling often cause others to form an initial opinion about someone based off of the way they type. My grammar definitely isn't perfect; I tend to not proofread and make mistakes when posting on forums and chatrooms. I do agree with Clockwork Chaos in saying how people on the internet will chastise you until you get it right. I've been on forums that autocorrect common misspellings such as "alot" or "definately" into something silly, embarrassing the poster. I have learned several things from forums like that.

Personally unless I'm intentionally using bad grammar you will never see me use it on purpose. I even get nitpicky about when to use bolds and italics. I'm not so good with punctuation though. I tend to use too many commas and half the time I'm misusing semicolons. I also usually have issue remember when to put a period when parenthesis (which I use too much of) and quotation marks are involved.

Grammar is an important factor, but only for certain things.

A few years back, I really didn't care about small errors I made, like saying "your" instead of "you're" and not using apostrophes in words like: "Don't". Now, I try searching for any error I possibly made to make it sound better, especially when on a forum. It's funny how I just change like that. I only use bad grammar when I do it intentionally to act dumb. (Which is pretty fun at times. happy.png ) This is why alot of my posts are edited. (Like this one.) You can take a look at my old posts, and you may see some examples of what I used to type like.

Honestly, for other people, grammar doesn't bother me that much, especially when talking to friends. As long as I can understand them, I'm okay with it. I will admit that if I see someone who doesn't use punctuation or capitalization, I get a faint impression on them. However, it hardly leaves a scratch on what I think of the person before I get to know him/her

If it's for something like a job application, then good grammar really is necessary, no question.

I'm a bit of a grammar nazi. I hate using text speak like "U r rite" I can't stand it, hell I can't even type it...my natural instincts kick in and I type full words automatically. Even when gaming, I"ll send full fledged messages, partially because I can actually type, I know some people, it takes them awhile to type out a sentence or whatever, so they resort to text speak when online....or even..."leet" speak, which is something else I absolutely hate.

Grammar always has to be right for me. All my text messages and forum posts are always in full letters (Auto correct helps out). I'm just not one for slang shortening.

I try my best to use proper grammar at all times. Although when I am fooling around I ignore most grammar rules just screw around with people. Using proper grammar is very important though because you don't want to end up being the person everyone looks at like you have three heads because you said something idiotic.

Whether or not the usage of grammar is important to me is determined by the situation at hand, and, if applicable, who I am talking to. When writing forum posts, assignments for school, or anything else that is at least somewhat formal in nature I will most likely use correct grammar. When chatting with people, I generally do not worry so much about being grammatically correct, unless the conversation I am in is in some way formal and/or serious.
