Upgrading my RAM was probably one of the best ideas ever. I bought an 8 GB kit to replace my 4 GB set. So I get home and install the 8 GB kit. Then I put the two older sticks away. Then I get to thinking...."I've got these two sticks doing nothing. And the entire nearly 2 years I've had this machine, I've had two RAM slots open...why not try all 4 sticks?" So I do some research to see if it's even safe to mix RAM sticks and the general idea was that it's kinda like playing Russian roulette. If can go well or not. Worst that happens is that you reduce your performance, and if that happens you just take out the sticks you think are slowing you down. Worst case scenario you fry your RAM. I was in the mood for experimenting. So I checked my sticks...and already I have a problem. One set is set to 1.65 volts and the new set is at 1.5. I went ahead and set all 4 sticks in there. I have 2 sets of slots on my motherboard - blue and black. I put the 1.5 volt RAM in the blue and the 1.65 volt RAM in the black and fired up into BIOS. Set my mobo to undervolt the sticks to 1.5 volts and run it at 1333 MHz.

The results were great. It recognizes that I've installed 12 GB of RAM and it's running in 4 channels! :D

But I wanted to test it to see how it would work under extreme circumstances. I played around in some games and it worked like it did when I had the 8 GB kit in there solo so I really gained no benefit (like I sorta expected because once you pass 8 GB at this time, you reach the point of diminishing returns unless you deal with huge files on a day to day basis). But I did want to see if it would be stable under extreme circumstances. Say I'm writing a 34,000 page essay?

DAMN NOTEPAD IS A RESOURCE HOG!!!

But having Notepad have a huge amount of data in it wasn't cutting. I opened Chrome and opened a bunch of new tabs. Like...a BUNCH of new tabs. And eventually I had my machine using 10.8 GB of its available memory. It guaranteed I was using all 4 sticks because no single stick of memory in there has 1.2 GB on it. And it was using more than the 8 GB that was in my new kit so it was guaranteeing that I was at least using the old sticks as well.

All but one of those windows had about 50 tabs open at once. It was pretty ridiculous getting to use this much memory at once.

So I went back to the tab that had MLPF open on it and browsed around a bit and watched a couple videos and whatnot. It still ran smooth as butter considering it was using 90+% of its memory. Probably never gonna be using that much but I'm glad I had 4 DIMM slots

So again my PC trumps my brother's console in every way. I'm happy lol

Next upgrade: Graphics card. I'm thinking about an R9-285. Then it'll be time for the upgrade that I've been kinda dreading...swapping the CPU. :okiedokielokie: I'm going to end up going with an Intel i5. Which i5? I don't know. But it's going to require a mobo swap. Not looking forward to that but I can't have my cheap CPU bottlenecking me. The FX architecture just isn't that good.

Don't judge a book by its cover. You will truly understand it if you're just willing to read it.
