The smoke alarm in the apartment below mine was going off. I called the property manager who tried to call the guy who lives there but to no avail. After about five minutes, I dialed 911. Better to call them in and not find anything than to not call them and the building be lost. Also, I don't have renters' insurance though that might change after tonight. 

 

It was a tough call, really. I couldn't smell any smoke nor could I see a fire. But that alarm was definitely going off. The door was locked so they had to pry it open. It hurt to watch because this is an old building with beautiful wood, but it was better to lose that than to see the whole place go up in smoke. There was definitely smoke when they got in. 

 

The guy who lives there left his teapot on the stove. The plastic melted and was burning, setting off the alarm.

This guy is pretty young. I think he's younger than me. I never see him away except for a few occasions. I almost think he lives off of parent money, to be honest. I'm not sure this guy has a job. 

 

He's not disagreeable by any means. He's really nice. He was thanking me for calling the fire department (I did it just as much for myself if not more because I really don't want to replace my things). I just don't think he understands many things of living on your own. Anyway after tonight and having his door busted up pretty good by the FD, I don't think he'll be doing that again.

I think the metal wasn't melting but it was hot enough to melt the plastic. When the firemen brought the teapot outside to cool off and stop filling the place with smoke, it looked mostly intact. I'd also vouch to say that by this point all the water had boiled out, allowing the metal to take in more heat from the flame.

I don't know that you actually could set beer on fire. I mean...the alcohol does burn, but I don't think there'd be enough in there to light it.
