Geez, now I feel inadequate. NVIDIA released the GeForce GTX 980 Ti. It can run 4K at 60FPS. My GeForce 840M will seem like a Smart Car to it.

Β

Yeah, but the 980 Ti is a desktop card. Not to mention that your laptop has a built-in display and you need a 4K monitor to even run 4K. And those things still cost around $1,000 though they're getting more affordable. You aren't exactly missing out on a lot because Nvidia released a new desktop card. I don't think it's going to affect their mobile markets any. But you do have dedicated graphics memory and that does make it a sight more powerful than laptops with integrated graphics like mine. And keep in mind that my laptop new would have been in the same price range as the one you're looking at. A Toshiba Portege Z835-P330 was about $950 new in 2011 - 2012. Of course, being an ultrabook, it focuses on size more than performance, and I needed a small laptop to go with my giant books in college.Β

Β

Anyway, if you're worried about performance comparisons, you're not even comparing apples to apples. It's a lot like saying Chevy just made a new Silverado that has tons better off-road capabilities and saying your Toyota Camry will look like a Power Wheels next to it. The two just aren't made for doing the same things.Β

Β

I think the laptop you chose will suit you. If you wanted a badass graphics card in a laptop, you're looking at a gaming laptop, and those things aren't in your price range. Not to mention that since gaming laptops have huge graphics card to power, the battery life would be atrocious. Unless you're planning on playing GTA or Borderlands or something like that, I'd vouch to say you ended up getting a good laptop all things considered.Β

I don't know about computers, remember. This is a mid-level gaming computer.

Even on an 840M, you could probably do some mid-range AAA gaming. Probably some medium textures at 720p and even high textures at 1080p for some older, smaller games. I don't know because I don't know too much about mobile GPU's. But my old Radeon 7770 was a dedicated desktop GPU, and your GPU will have twice the VRAM that my old card had.Β

Well crap, in this video, he ran Tomb Raider at "Ultimate" and was still cranking 54 FPS on an 880M (chart at 3:29).Β

Β

Β

So yeah. I'd actually say you could do quite a bit of gaming on your laptop. That thing may be a lot more powerful than I originally thought

Cool.Β

Β

I mean, I'm looking at these specs and I think this is a damn good laptop for the money. Again, my laptop was a lot less laptop for about the same amount of money. Of course, in 2011, if you wanted a laptop with that kind of performance, you were looking at something incredibly thick and heavy as a brick to carry around.Β

Β

The only thing I might be worried about is throttling. There's a small grille to the side and I'm going to guess there's one in back, too, but it'll be covered by the screen when open. Desktop components will run pretty hot, but they have far superior cooling solutions (you should see the heatsink on my GPU - it'sΒ massive).Β

Β

Keep in mind this thing didn't fit in my case until I bent the metal around to force it in. And getting it out is still a magic trick.

Β

Β

But for drawing things, you should experience no problems at all. I didn't realize it was so small. Keep in mind that serious gaming laptops have huge cooling solutions

Β

Β

Β

Not trying to make you feel uncomfortable about your purchase. I just wouldn't expect to be running many of the latest games at really high resolutions and graphics settings. But you'll probably be able to do some decent gaming on it. I guess the only way to know how it performs in the real world is to use it! lol

Β

As for using it for your drawing programs (I think you use InkScape or PonyScape or RuneScape or something like that lol), you should have more than enough power to run everything.Β

Β

But anymore, even a 1 TB hard drive isn't adequate for holding a lot of AAA games. Not when Wolfenstein is 40 GB and GTA V is 65 GB.Β

I'm not huge on PC gaming. At most, I'll run a MMO, or some old disc-based game from 10 years ago, that doesn't require a lot. I do watch a lot of anime on my computers, though.

Oh, then I'm not worried at all. Just don't leave it on your bed or some place like that and you'll be golden. I say that because a lot of laptops overheat that way.Β
