I guess it'll take a while until we get the DC Expansion ; since they can only add adjacent states ; and the closest one to DC they have right now is New Mexico xD

It's outside of the state system, it was felt that if any state had the government within it they might think themselves too important, so it sits between States but isn't one as it's the Federal District and seat of government.

We say "London" and think of it as a city, but it contains the "City of London" and the "City of Westminster"

Maybe it could have been a state but the founders decided against that so we have the current situation.

If it was a state, either it or Washington State would need a name change as two with the same name would be really confusing.

Many people think there are 51 or even 52 states. There are 50 stars on the flag, one for each state. Hawaii was the last to join ie 50th hence the TV show "Hawaii 5-0"
