Well Windows is familiar, so obviously people want to stick with it. And it has the highest marketshare, meaning that there are likely programs available for it that are not available for other OSs.
For a user who needs a pc every now and then to do online banking, check their emails, google something, write a word document, it absolutely does not matter if you use linux or windows or mac ; I know Linux has the notion that it is for computer nerds and programmers only, but for the average user who doesn't do that they will work just like Windows.

So, Linux advantages? It's Free, it's Open Source which leads to higher security because more people see the code and find exploits etc more easily, variety - there are hundreds of Linux Distros for everyone from kids learning how to use a computer, over the media creator to the most hardcore hacker ; these also range from super stable ones for the average user to distros that are updated every day for people who want to play with the latest tech ;

Instead, I think it's better to ask what are the advantages of using Windows. And IMO that's: familiarity, it comes preinstalled, games. Nothing else, and these advantages only exist because they have a high marketshare!
Okay, maybe you can also put movie editing, or digital art on it, but those also work on Macs, but yeah true linux is short on good tools for those jobs, but they do exist too.

In the end I think it simply doesn't matter to the average user what OS he/she uses. As long as whatever you use works for you, stick with it.

I will go to my grave bashing Mac. 

It's like they don't want Windows users going over to their OS. I get that Apple's mission statement is that they're to be different. But holy fucksticks, make your OS intuitive for newcomers. I picked up Linux pretty easily. But to this day, I feel so out of place on a Mac.
