bleak? Sure, MGS is no "Everything is happy" series. Sure, some scenes are happy, positive. But most is tragic. Every more important character has his(Mostly not good) past.

 

Example, the main character, Solid Snake:

 

He was create by a project, "Les enfants terrible". But still born in a normal way. Since then, he get trained, by different people, until he get his first real sneaking mission. He is used to fight and sneak. He manage to infiltrate Outer Heaven, rescue his comrade and friend Grey Fox and destroys the Metal Gear. Shocked, he have to find out, that his Commandeur, Big Boss, is the leader. He barely manage to beat him, while the counter of self destruction gows lower and escaped in time. Suffered from nightmares and traumas about his mission, he leaves FOXHOUND and get to therapy. But 4 years later, 1999, they need his help again in Zanzibar Land. Fighting and sneaking, he find out, that this time, the Metal Gear is active and controlled by his friend, Grey Fox, who attacks him. He destroys again Metal Gear and killed Grey Fox, only to find out, that Big Boss is still alive. With an self-made flame thrower(Deo and lighter) he finally killed him and escaped. Free from the nightmares, he leaves. Only to fight again, 6 years later, 2005. After the Shadow Moses Incident, he accept, that he never can have rest and with a new friend, he grounding Philanthrophy, to stop Metal Gear's. After the incidents 2007 and 2009, he knows, he have to stop Ocelot, or mentally his twin brother Liquid.

 

In all games, he alway get showed as the strong icecold killer. Especially MGS4 shows, that it isn't true. He suffers more then once during hid final mission.

 

He find out, he probably have a half year to live through the virus FOXDIE. He meet the first time his mother, only to see her die in his hands. He suffers several times from his fast aging. He have to fight again and again and again. And even the "Bad guy, he have to find out, that his plan saves the world and that Snake wins was the plan all about. And even Big Boss, always tried to kill Snake and his father, accept, that he makes mistakes.

 

All the characters suffer, no character just appears to die for nothing

I'm currently writing an octascratch fic. It's the first real fanfiction I've done in a long time, most of my latest stuff is original.
