private Crystal Requiem: The Rise of King Sombra

Early morning in the city of Canterlot. The palace was buzzing with activity, moreso than usual. Servants bustling around, making sure everything was perfect. But today, there was another reason for all the excitement.

“Your Highness, the team you sent for has arrived.”

“Good. Show them in,” Princess Celestia said. “Luna, please go and wait in your chambers.”

“But, Sister-”

“Go. I promise I’ll make it up to you after, but right now, this is no place for you.”

Princess Luna stormed off, muttering under her breath. “You always say that…”

Once Princess Luna had left, the guards brought the team inside.

“Welcome. Normally I would have time for pleasantries, but this is an urgent mission. As such, I will keep this brief. One of our northern scouting teams has discovered an ancient tomb of sorts and I would like all of you to investigate. It will most likely be dangerous, but I am confident in your abilities, especially since I chose each one of you specifically. You will be transported via portal from the courtyard, and Agent Snowy Fields will escort you to the site and give you more information along the way. If you’ll excuse me, I must attend to my younger sister.” Princess Celestia said, beckoning for the guards to escort the team out, then she left to find Princess Luna.

They were led to a strange looking device with two Unicorns standing beside it and an ash white Unicorn with a faint blue mane standing in front of it. A pale green Earth Pony stood beside him, shifting uncomfortably.

For Eclipse, it was disconcerting that only one princess was present to present their orders - and not his at that - but he listened intently all the same. What it was unusual to receive orders from Celestia, it wasn't unheard of and ultimately he served both of the sisters. An order from one was no less that from the other, officially. As he took note of their objective, he silently observed the 'team' he had been assigned to:

'Not the night guard. Not even guards at all from the look of them - some hardly look capable of following orders...' He thought. 'Mercenaries? Soldiers? Or just brigands picked up from the street? What kind of game is the Princess playing this time? And where is Luna, for that matter? Does she get no say in this, despite one of her own guard being put forward?'

Of course, he knew his place. The questions would either answer themselves or they would not: regardless, he wasn't going to question orders from the Princess herself. Nodding firmly towards the regal Alicorn as she took her leave, he shot a questioning glance at the guards leading them out and fell in line without a word.

Fire was worried about the Princesses, they were sisters and they always had their fights. But as of late they were becoming further and further apart, and Fire Sharp was able to see the sisters everyday. As the Commander of The First edition of special squad she was held up and in control of most of the defensie that the Empire ruled over, a drooling task and role.

But she followed her orders, like the soldier she was.

Fire and the others of her team were escorted through the halls of the palace, a grand place.

Her armour slightly chinked as she walked through the great halls. It was mostly black leather that covered most of her body, and cutie mark, but metal plates were strapped to her shoulders, legs, and back. An unpolished gold to distinguish her position, and for the occasion. She had to wear the gold when in audience to the royals, though iron or chainmail were her usual attire.

Fire sharp hoped that they would reach their destination soon, for she believed that if the princess had to ask her to join the group then it must be serious. For had the job of being the leader of her majesty's military.

After hearing what the princess said, Gloomfury turned around and walked out with his so called 'team'. He was a knife for hire. Not a soldier in her oh so royal guard. Sure he use to be a soldier back in the griffin Kingdom. Hell, he was one of the best. But that was a in the past now. After being damn near dragged out of the bar he was in, and after nearly killing the ponies who were doing the dragging. Gloom calmed down enough to hear what the princesses representative had to say.

And the only reason he accept the job is cause he's sure we will me paid very handsomely for his services. And he aims to please. Gloomfury has developed quite the reputation completing any job he accepts, no matter how hard it is. That and he's one of the best knife fighters around. And he's willing to get his hooves dirty, unlike the pansy ass royal guard. And it seems like he'll have to get his hooves dirty for some reason. Why else would the princess hire him in the first place? He looks at the others in his team and it looks like he's the only one who's done enough to stain his hooves with blood that he can almost smell it on his hoof.

The ash white unicorn made eye contact with each of the ponies that entered the room before speaking,

"Good Morning. I'm agent Snowy Fields. And the mare next to me is Poppy Seed, you may consider her...my personal assistant. Now I'm not in the mood for useless pleasantries so let's get straight to business. Around a month ago there was a powerful surge of magic to the far north. The purpose of this expedition is to determine exactly what the cause was. I will only lead you to the site. I have my own orders that must be taken care of."

Snowy Fields continued to talk as he motioned to the unicorns to prepare the teleportation spell, "Now some of you may wonder why exactly you are here. I had the honor of personally choosing each and everyone of you. Some of you I chose because you are actually loyal to Equestria. Some of you were chosen because of your expertise, and the rest of you were chosen because you are entirely expendable. Now I have prepared some supplies and gear for those who are ill-equipped for this expedition. This is your last chance to decline this mission and leave."

Before anypony could respond or leave the room the two Unicorn mages completed the spell. A moment later the entire group found themselves standing in the middle of a snow covered plain. The first thing everyone notices is how extremely cold it is. A large circle of stones surround the group. A dozen wooden boxes are sitting outside of the stone circle.

Snowy Fields calmly walks over to the wooden boxes and levitates two fur cloaks out. He takes one for himself and gives one to Poppy Seed. "If you are squeamish about using the skins of animals as clothing you will need to get over it. You can direct any and all questions to Poppy Seed. Once everyone is ready we will continue."

“Thank you, sir. Everypony, listen up. As Agent Fields said, I’m Poppy Seed, and I am not that floozy you picked up in some bar. If you dare try to betray Equestria, or anypony on this team, you will be executed on the spot. Those of you thinking that we can’t get away with it, look around. Nopony is going to find you out here. Now get ready,” Poppy said. When the team wasn’t looking, her tough demeanour vanished. I’m not any glamourous agent, either. Still, I hope that was enough for Agent Field’s approval. She thought to herself. She was going to be acting as Agent Field’s representative in this expedition. She wrapped the fur cloak around herself as she heard somepony calling in the distance.

“Hello! Ah, my device worked, didn’t it? Yes, yes, yes indeed it did!” An excited pale peach coloured unicorn trotted up to the group. He was dressed in a white coat and wore black leather armour underneath. Poppy introduced him.

“This is Kinetic Energy, the pony responsible for the group teleport spell and the amplification device,” She said.

“A pleasure to meet all of you. You can call me ‘Kine’ for short. Agent Snowy, a pleasure to see you again. So how was the trip? No missing limbs, dizziness, motion sickness?”

Does he ever shut up? Poppy thought to herself. This was going to be a long expedition…

'At least some of this expedition seems somewhat disciplined...' Eclipse thought wordlessly as he listened to Poppy Seed's over dramatised speech: regardless of how capable she might be at actually following through with her threats, it was a small comfort that at least one of their guides was an clear loyalist.

He wasted no time in confirming that all of his belongings had been brought with him: the golden hued half-plate issued to him as a spellcaster of the Night Guard had remained intact - though as it was practically a second skin to him this has hardly a surprise. His spear had likewise made the journey unscathed - it's leaf shaped tip made from the same not-gold material looked almost silver as it reflected the colourless surroundings.

"I assume this is more than a simple scouting mission?" He asked no pony in particular, or rather, stated in the form of a question. "Or is it now customary to remove a guard of the princess from his position to investigate the bones of some long dead civilisation?"

More than anything it felt wrong being here: loyal to the princess to the end, he knew that the Night Guard would manage perfectly well without him: even then, threats to the princess were few and far between. Still, there had been rumours about the sisters... and he didn't like being away from where he should be should the worst come to pass.

Midnight Sky had been deep in thought ever since he had been summoned for a special mission by the princesses. He was curious as to why Princess Luna had not been present to meet them like Celestia had been, and he wondered about what this mission was exactly. Midnight had already figured it was probably not going to be peaceful, seeing as a few of his 'teammates' appeared to be associated with the royal guard or otherwise proficient in combat, and Poppy Seed's impressive speech did rather well at showing that whatever their objective was, it was really important to the princesses. Right after the speech, Midnight Sky did a quick check to ensure that all his belongings were present.

'Looks like my armor is all intact, I would hope so after my sister insisted that I wear it. Although I feel like I stand out a bit, it's hard to seem subtle wearing ornate segmented armor decorated with gold and obsidian. Now if anypony asks I'll have to explain that I'm not even from Equestria and that I was once royalty!' Midnight thought to himself as he finished checking his small stash of supplies he had tucked into small pockets in his armor. Now that this rather talkative unicorn had approached the group, Midnight wondered just what kind of mess he'd gotten into now.

Gloomfury was the next in the group to step forward to get a fur cloak. If he knew he was going to this ice hell hole he would have packed his own fer wear. He ties the cloak around him and walks back to were he was. He gets a better look at Snowy Fields,  Poppy Seed and Kinetic Energy. He also thinks about what Poppy seed said, executed on the spot? HA! He would like to see them try. But he has no reason to betray Equestria or anyone in his team. As long as he gets payed he'll follow along with this, but he will not be a lamb to a slaughter.

@, Gloomfury smirks at what  Eclipse said. "Guard of the princesses? HA! More like one of the royal lapdogs of two high and mighty goddesses who didn't earn their title." Gloom never cared for the  the princesses. Just cause hes a pony and they can control the moon and sun. Don't make them his princesses. And the talk of wanting peace with out dropping a single drop of blood annoyed the hell out of him. For someone who seen the things he has know damn well that's impossible.

"There will never be peace in this would." He thought.

“Ah, not a good idea to say things like that around Agent Snowy, good sir,” Kine said to Gloomfury.  Kine smirked at whatever he was thinking, before he finished talking. “He has a low tolerance for those who talk about the Princesses that way. And I doubt Mr Scribe will take kindly to your words, either. Yes, I know who you all are. I received official word from the Princesses, after all.”

Poppy resumed her tough demeanour, though she suspected they knew it was an act by now. “Kine, aren’t you supposed to be doing something?” She barked, only to receive a look of mock indignation in return.

“Yes dear,” He said, much to Poppy’s chagrin. Kinetic Energy in name and personality, it seemed. He acted as if he had far too much energy. As he passed by Eclipse Scribe, he added, “You’ll see some wonderful things, sir. Don’t worry, you’ll be in and out in a matter of days, then back to your everyday, admittedly boring sounding lives. Hip hip hooooray!” He raised the pitch of his voice as he extended the last part.

“Kine!” Poppy barked. “Would you please quit it, you oddball?”

“Trying to impress the boss, are we?” Kine said innocently. “You’re doing great. Keep it up. Oh, and the last pony who insulted the Princesses in front of Agent Snowy?” He imitated an explosion with his forehooves, twirling on the spot as he did so.

"Well will certainly be interesting, at the least." Midnight remarked to himself, not meaning to say it out loud. In truth his interest really had been piqued, but more in the way that he wondered just how much Princess Celestia, and Princess Luna, really knew about him. Neither Midnight Sky nor his sister had ever told any pony where they're from, but he supposed it could be possible that the princesses know of his homeland simply because it would be in their interest to keep track of foreign bodies. The idea that some ponies in Equestria might actually know his secret put Midnight Sky on edge, and he moved to the edge of the group so he could stand apart from them.

In addition, Midnight was starting to tire of Poppy's whole tough act. 'At least Kinetic is around to add some entertainment. Between kissup Poppy and these more stoic warrior ponies, it would make this the most boring urgent mission ever. So long as I'm not involved in the humor, it'll be a nice relief from serious, more serious, and too serious.' he thought to himself as he waited or somepony to actually explain why they were all dragged to this frozen wasteland on a royal mission for the princess. 'At least my armor was made for all weather, so it has removable wool padding to keep me warm while the others have to wear those fur coats. Granted none of this will do any of us any good if we stay out here in this weather, so I hope Kinetic, Poppy, or this agent Snowy Fields will explain why we're looking for powerful magic in the middle of nowhere surrounded by snow and ice.'

Bolt Action managing to stay awake the whole time asks what the fur was made out of. "Ughhh, is this made out of squirrels or what..." He held the coat with his frozen hooves as its warm touch traveled its way to his body. "Well whatever this is, I'm going to like it alot." Bolt suddenly stumbled a little bit as he caught his shades in the nick of time before it hit the floor. "Excuse me, I'm having some technical difficulties. But in the meantime, I'll just stay over here." Bolt put his shades back on as he made his way to the edge of the group. He felt ditzy from what currently happened. He told himself "Agh, that was stupid! What is wrong with you!" While having the urge to facehoof, he noticed how covered with snow his hoof was so he set it back on where the frostbite should belong.

He didn't have a fond in working with a team since what happened before when he had a partner, but he let that thought go cause it was from the past and this is the present. He thought to himself "Go with the flow, it's not going to happen anymore."

Fire listened as the others talked, taking in what had been said. And not taking what that stallion said very highly. She was Commanding General Of the first edition Special Ops, considerably the only defense force leader that came in contact with the princesses nearly everyday. She protected them and the ponies in their kingdom. Which was probably why she was sent here in the first place. The princesses did sometimes used her for these kind of things.@@Gloomfury,

"I have you know, that as the commanding general of the Equestrian Military force. I have every right to throw you into the canterlot dungeons. But we're obviously not there so I'll let you slide.

"Or is it now customary to remove a guard of the princess from his position to investigate the bones of some long dead civilisation?"

And I agree with the stallion about taking high positioned ponies out of their schedules. I would like to see what made you bring us here, so that we can go home swiftly. I have things to talk about to the princesses when I get back, and an entire force to run. As you can understand."

Fire was trying to get this done, but she could take her time. Being in a high position gave her headaches, but she had to do her job.

"Until such a time that you have ended a griffin incursion, driven dragons from our lands and become a living embodiment of time itself, might I suggest you hold your tongue?" Glared Eclipse.

@

"I am pleased to see it is not just thieves and petty cutthroats I have been partnered with. You are Fire Sharp?"

He had seen the mare about the castle before: watching was his responsibility after all. While he watched and listened to everything around him, Eclipse had little interest in military affairs - his role was strictly seperate to the army with regards to anything short of a full scale invasion of the city.

Still, a loyal soldier was more than welcome as a companion to his way of thinking.

Lifting one of the pelt-cloaks into the air and exploring it briefly with a glowing tendril of telekinetic magic, Eclipse wrapped the crude cloak around himself. It was a far cry from the thick robes he had been supplied by the castle on his induction, but that was his own fault for not thinking ahead to bring them. The furs would suffice.

(OOC: Thanks to Windbreaker for his assistance with this post.)

"Do you remember when I mentioned I brought some of you here to die? You're one of them. I'd murder you for what you just said but that means there's a higher chance that a pony that actually matters could die." Snowy said in an almost bored fashion. It was remarkable self-control that he hadn't killed Gloomfury already.  "If I did actually decide to execute you for your slander, you wouldn't explode. That's just Kinetic’s...unique sense of humor getting the better of him. No, you'd find your blood slowly freezing until it reaches your heart. Maybe I will be merciful and stop the freezing before then, but you'll spend the rest of your miserable life wishing you had died in that griffon shithole you crawled from."

He turned his attention to Poppy and simply said, “I’d advise you to stop making threats you cannot carry out. I don’t need you because of your ambitions and your terribly pathetic life before I plucked you from the city gutters. I need you to be useful.”

Poppy stood away from the group, deep in thought. Snowy’s words were cold as ice and cut deep into her. I’m doing the best I can, but nopony appreciates what I do. Am I really as worthless as the others say I am? She thought.

Kine tapped her on the shoulder, taking her completely by surprise. “I wonder, why is it you act so tough? Are you really trying to impress Agent Snowy, or is it deeper than that?” He dropped his innocent tone as he spoke, sounding somewhat sinister in the process.

Poppy glared at the peach-coloured Unicorn. “Here’s an idea. You spend your life trying to get ahead in a Unicorn dominated city as an Earth Pony, then see how happy you are when you get called ugly names and racial slurs for most of your life, then throw in parents who are Unicorns, disappointed that their only daughter is a worthless Earth Pony who can’t use magic and has no value in this society. Does that sound like fun to you?!”

“It sounds like hell. Still, I couldn’t care less what race you are. You made it to be Agent Snowy’s personal assistant. No pony, let alone Unicorn, made it that far.” Kine resumed his usual excitable tone. “So smile. This trip will be fun.”

Poppy was left confused. “What do you mean by that? No pony has ever been Agent Fields’ personal assistant before?” Maybe he’s not such an annoying pony after all. He reminds me of you…

“By the way, you realise that the others heard you, right?” Kine said innocently. Poppy blushed, suddenly feeling embarrassed.

“Sorry, everypony.” She said.

@@SilverHeart, Gloomfury almost laughs at this. "I doubt I'll be dying on this mission. Unlike you bastards, I was trained to survive  harsh weathers like this. Midnight was taken aback by Poppy Seed's sudden burst of emotion, after she had spent almost their entire duration together as a group threatening them and berating them. But what really took him by surprise was her description of her life growing up, it sounded far too familiar. Midnight and his little sister had both been belittled by their older siblings growing up, either for not being able to fly like their alicorn and pegasus siblings, or because of their magic by their earth pony sibling. This gave Midnight a bit more respect for Poppy, she was just trying to prove her worth, and he couldn't help but sympathize. But the feeling didn't last long as the other ponies, particularly agent Snowy and the pony Gloomfury, quickly changed the mood to something a bit more aggressive. 'If we keep on like this, nothing will get done and we'll all either die or be too late. I guess I'm the only one here who remembers we came here for a reason other than to argue.' Midnight thought to himself before stepping up to stand closer to the front of the group, but not quite to where agent Snowy stood in the lead position.

"Enough! Now I'm sure we could all stand here and argue over who's stronger and who's going to survive, but if I recall correctly we came here to investigate a strange source of magic that Princess Celestia told us about. So how about instead of standing here in the snow arguing like a bunch of fillies and foals, we actually get to the task at hand and investigate this source of magical energy, which I assume Snowy Fields is here to lead us towards or otherwise find so that we can figure out what it is and whether or not it is a threat to Equestria. So everypony just stop bickering so we can get this done and go home where we'll never have to meet each other again." Midnight Sky said in a commanding, almost royal sounding voice, one he hadn't truly used since his days as royalty. When he finished talking Midnight stood his ground awkwardly, hoping he didn't just involve himself in the arguing he was trying to stop.

Bolt quickly looked at Midnight in curiosity while he gave a speech. He whispered to himself "Oh how right you are... At least somepony has a common sense of teamwork here because I would kill myself right now with my blade." Bolt Action was still a bit 'off the edge'. Not choosing his words correctly, he disregarded what Midnight said and talked back to Gloomfury. "I think I'll volunteer and say to you to sit and calm the fuck down for the sake of Celestia. Get out of here if your not going to cooperate because unlike the rest of us who actually want to work together,  we want to complete this task and hopefully will not ever want to do something like this ever again with a stallion like you."  Bolt let out a sigh on what was going to happen next since he unsucessfully tried to get him on the good side if it actually was called a good side. He was ready for what ever skank words Gloomfury would throw at him, judging from what recently happended and made a frown across his face. He held the knife hidden behind his clothes if it turned out unexpected.

“That will be quite enough of that! Knives have sheathes, Mr Gloomfury. I suggest you stay in yours.” A commanding voice called out. Out of the distance, the rest of the science team was being herded towards them by Kine.

“Hello there, everypony. I’m back.” Kine said, unaware that nopony besides Agent Fields had seen him leave.  “And I brought friends.”

The white Pegasus who had called out before stood before the group. His build was slim and one could easily mistake him for a mare, since his voice was the only sign that he was a stallion. His mane was jet black with lighter shades of pink at the top and streaked through his bangs. “Greetings to you all. I’m Aegis Dare, Research Division. I work for the Royal Guard as a scientist, and thusly I hold the rank of Captain.” His eyes lingered over each one of the group for a moment, as if sizing them up, before turning to Agent Fields. “A pleasure to meet you in person, Agent Fields.”

“Save the pleasantries, Captain. Is your team ready?” Agent Fields said, irritated by the constant arguing and the long waiting.

“We are now. I must say, I have never seen a more disciplined group. I can just hear the unity in your voices.” Captain Dare made no attempt to hide his sarcasm, but moved on before anypony could respond.

“Good. Now let’s move out!” Agent Fields barked.

"Finally." Midnight Sky muttered under his breath. He was beyond glad that they were finally on the move, it sure beat standing around arguing. 'Wonderful timing, much longer and our little expedition might've been down a few members, and somehow I don't think killing each other before our mission even begins would be very productive or helpful in any way. except maybe there being less arguing.' Midnight thought as he looked over their little group, wondering how in Equestria they were going to ever operate as a team when they could barely tolerate one another. He took a quick glance at Gloomfury, hoping that that pony won't be too much trouble on this mission before turning his thoughts to the new arrival, this Captain Aegis Dare.

Just on first impressions Midnight wasn't all too fond of their pegasus escort, the blatant insult to the group as a whole was enough to irk Midnight. But he also agreed with Captain Aegis, this jumbled group of ponies was hardly a team, and seemed to be as likely to fight each other as any enemies. 'I sure hope this is nothing too serious. Besides the point that that would mean that there is a threat to Equestria, I just don't think our little group here has the cooperative capabilities to handle anything powerful or evil enough to be a threat.' Midnight thought absently.

Eclipse had always been cab able of keeping his temper in check: it was being able to control and dull down his emotions that had earned him his position after all: body and mind in equal measure, backed up by an almost foolishly unshakable loyalty to his princess.

Everypony has limits though.

Thankfully, his attention was spared by the appearance of yet another pony: a scientist of some sort.

"Just keep the traitors away from me and I'll see to whatever you brought me here to do." He said, falling into line. "I can work well with others so long as they are willing to do what must be done."

Latching the spear against his side so that the tip faced downwards and away from him, the unicorn looked over at the most recent pony to weigh in on the discussion.

@@Icy Void,

"You don't look like a guard or soldier. What about you? I trust our entire group does not consist of fools who seem adamant on strife and anarchy for its own sake?"

This one was a wildcard as far as Eclipse was concerned: he could place his intentions at all but at the very least he seemed less suicidally jumped up than the traitor.
