Okay,

lets flip the script.

 

Luna ends up being the Main head pony.  Yes she still rules the night.

in fact banishing celestial to the moon (Forr?  I'm still working on that one)

 

Seeing as how the moon would be luna's Domain i could totally see her using the moon as a prison.

Not to mention if you've ever seen luna's lament,

 

Celestial confesses she's had a hard time running the night in luna's absence.
Can you imagine Luna running the day while Celestial is banished?

 

I kinda picture discord busting out a lawn chair, making some pop corn appear and go
"Hay if this keeps up I can retire."

 

I imagine if they did this episode it would have to be some kind of else world,

or dream.

but if it were a dream, (well I'll let you spin that)

 

Luna often comes off as the like able one of the Alicorn sister.

Could you see Celestial given the right circumstances could be jelous?

 

Alternatively,

they could just do an episode where luna and or twilight (the number one student)
has to run the day.

I don't think Luna was the victim of celestia but the victim of circumstance. I believe in any swap role or character placement, the same result or similar result could be made. What happened to Luna was cause of the roles every pony influenced as well as her own and the only fault be made was not dealing with the problems effectively enough.

Lullaby for a Princess and Luna's Reply support my own head canon on what happened. They were both to blame but in relation to each other blameless. Celestia should have done more to help Luna, but Luna should have realized her own value and that she was loved. Luna took the dark path and Celestia did what was needed to protect her ponies.

Since the others already addressed the topic of Luna not being bad, I'll just say this: If Luna ruled while Celestia was away, I believe Equestria would be a much more strict environment. Less happiness and more unease about their future. Of course since Celestia would've been gone for awhile, this would change over time and they would become accustomed to it. However, it would be a less exciting world and more dictated.

If Luna was the responsible one to run Equestria, it would feel like an oppressive communist government where she can make all of the rules and changes that she wants and no one can try to defy against her. It would be like a dictatorship, where the ponies wouldn't even be able to have fun but they have to follow her orders under her rule.
