He breaks the cliche of having a moody bishonen as a JRPG protagonist, and is instead a hybrid of Robin Hood, Han Solo, and Indiana Jones, complete with near-endless smart-alecky comebacks. What really sets him apart, however, is the fact that he's perfectly content with refusing credit and/or accepting blame for his actions, so long as $#!+ gets done regardless.

My favorite JRPG protagonist would have to be Vaan from Final Fantasy XII. He totally has reasonable justification for being the ostensibly prerequisite whiny bitch character in the Final Fantasy franchise, so that I would have forgiven him for it, but for valiant and noble reasons not entirely known to me he shrugged off the shroud of the emo stereotype and donned the majestic trimmings of the relatable character, for which I am eternally grateful.

Raspberyl (Disgaea 3: Absence of Justice) - Total badass. Graduated at the top of her class, goes to blood drives and volunteers regularly. Everything a demon shouldn't be. She's also a really great friend.

Zetta (Makai Kingdom: Chronicles of the Sacred Tome) - He's the most badass freakin' overlord in the entire cosmos. How can he not be on my favorites list? Super full of himself, but when you can shoot eye beams, that's a given. Not the brightest guy, but most problems in the netherworld can be solved with violence so he manages pretty well.

Yuri from Tales of Vesperia is pretty cool and I liked his dark side stuff but I always felt like they resolved it too transparently and it kinda ruined the point of him having that dark side.

 

I like Milla from Tales of Xillia more and Luke from Tales of the Abyss is my favorite Tales protagonist overall though I haven't played anymore of the series.

 

I hate silent protagonists in general but Serge from Chrono Cross would get a pass considering his role in the story of the game.

 

Too bad the topic is for JRPGs only cuz The Nameless One from Planescape: Torment is the best RPG protagonist of all time.

 

Also, I wrote all this off the top of my head and my favorites change constantly so don't expect this list to last long.
