A lack of punishment on the show

Think about it.

Discord apparently isn't locked away to be punished, but to safe guard equistra.

No ones ever tried to hunt down the changeling army,

Trixie enslaved a whole town, and she didn't even get a fine (she bought that amulet, a fine is at least warranted),

Diamond tiara and silver spoons are flank holes 24-7 no punishment,

gilda same and she ripped people off,

I mean Equistra must be a magical wonder land if your a petty criminal.

Just don't ever be as evil as Sombre and you'll never take any punishment.

My point?  That's kind of a horrible lesson.  If someone wrongs you, do just enough to protect you and the ones you love.

I mean seriously, what if they did catch the changeling queen?  Dungeon, what would that do?  Hangmans noose?

I mean the worse that will happen is "ponies won't like you."
I mean don't get me wrong that would suck,

I totally understand why discord wussed out,

but that seems to be the status quo for anyone not named sombre.

The writers probably feel a bit lenient when it comes to punishments, it just depends on the situation and the crime that the person committed. The moral does not matter to me.

I can kinda ignore the moral,

it's one of those nit pick things,

that being said team rocket gets punished more lol  at least they got locked up on occasion

For some they got their already got their punishments if you ask me.

Gilda lost her one and only friend (I assume) so she's very lonely. Trixie was corrupted so I guess they just let it slide. Discord was in stone for over 1,000 years so I think that's punishment enough. Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon usually get their just desserts by the end of the episodes like falling into the mud or being forced to sing a song while jumping in bunny ears.

I'm sure they'll get to the changlings and their queen...assuming they didn't leave orbit. *snort*.

Discord an warp matter and even pull his eyes out of his own head. How can you punish someone like that? Easy. you make them do normal things. no cells, no prison. No Magic. just nothing. To a being like Discord THAT is punishment. :P

Trixie was warped by the amulet, just as Luna was warped by darkness. Theres no need to punish them ebcause they know what they did was wrong and they punish themselves with that torment as is, especially Luna.

Besides. If sombra did survive, we all know what would have happened.

trixie choose to buy the amulet,

and over pay for it, despite a serious warning.

I mean it isn't like she got a hand me down from her family she found in her room.

Not just that but in all likely hood what was trixie legitly going to do with that thing?

After it came off she tried to blast rain bow dash with a spell that would put her in riving agony (ah trixie I LOVE YAH!)

It was off.

she didn't magically go "ZOMG What have i done." and break down crying after that sucker came off.  tears streaming her face.

first thing she did was "Bwhwhwhah torture time!"

That was all her.  She never struggled with anything evil she did,

i mean if she started to have second thoughts and we saw her eyes surge up and the amulet took over, I would bought that excuse.

Actually. By all right's that guy shouldn't have even sold her it in the first place. Surprised Celestia didn have some kind of group track him down incase he had other artifacts but thats another story.

And his warning was actually rather vague. Not the indepth description in Twilights book. he just tells her it is powerful and dangerous. He didn't say 'it will make you evil'.

So both were in the wrong. Trixie appologised but I doubt that merchant would. Maybe after some 'interrogation' he might.

It seems to me like everything always works itself out in the end. Like Gilda stopped being "cool" to Rainbow Dash, Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon usually get what's coming to them eventually, ect. I wouldn't really say it's Luna's fault for what happened with the whole Nightmare Moon thing. I like to go by the comic lore and say that the moon spirit things took her over, so I don't really think she deserved punishment. Discord is, well Discord. Why punish him by freezing him in stone again, when you can reform him and make him useful?

It reminds me of an episode of ranma1/2 where the guy has a cursed phonix egg and goes "I don't care if you smack me with a wad of bills i'm not selling it to you!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFswAsJgb34

and than he smacks him with a wadd of bills lol. I often wonder if he was baiting him to do that.

Granted i've watched enough horror movies and shows to know not to buy cursed items,

but trixie should know enough about magic (seeing as how according to faust she went to the same school as twilight)

she should have known better.

SHe found the damn thing.
she must have done her research.

I would add "protect everyone, not just you and the ones you love" to that, but that's besides the point. My point is: where's the problem?

It's an excellent lesson. It's the single most important lesson in morality that anyone could ever give or recieve: don't get caught up in the desire to punish just for punishment's sake. Nobody deserves to suffer, no matter what they've done. Punishment is not moral and it's not justice. It's nothing more than revenge, a desire to hurt people whom you feel deserve it.

Well some were punished at some point.

Discord was sealed for a thousand years.

Diamond Tiara was had to wear the bunny costume in family appreciation day and lost her post as head pony in charge of the paper.

Queen Chrysalis and the changelings were sent away. I just don't see a point in hunting them down. No one died and they are gone. Revenge is not a good reason to go after someone.

Trixie now for her I admit maybe she should of had to do something for Ponyville after taking over, forcing them to work, and sealing them off from the outside world. Still maybe she went off to help some where. I don't know.

Exactly

I'm not sure about how much Trixie knew about the amulet. She at least knew about the magic boost it would give her in order to beat Twilight but not the corrupt part.

Well, unless your suggesting that trixie when through giant large books of magic cherry picking any pages she could for magic boosts and skipping over and all warnings all willy nilly like......

yeah that sounds like our trixie, but if that was so that would been a neat scene, flipping the book away as she gallops up and the audience see's a long the words warning right where she disregarded looking into it further.

but even if that's true, that's negligence.  She's a magic user.  Her life is magic.  And if you wanna tell me "not that kind of magic."

that's exactly the counter argument for mitigating her responsibility.

A

she either sought something out she was experienced enough to know better,

or

B

Not knowing enough on about the magical mcguffin, should have gave her pause.

And i have no problem with the shop keep being punished either.

That was a magic shop was it not?  He makes a living selling mysterious and powerful wear.

I mean we likely won't see it on the show,

what lesson did he learn?

Money talks?

A kids show about friendship... Nuff said.

Besides, as a supporter of the notion that humans are inherently good, I'm all for second chances, and more. Only the direst crimes (murder, rape, torture, and other extreme acts which induce suffering) should be punished, and severely at that. Even reigns like Discord's are worth at least 1 more chance, provided no murder, rape, or torture occurred.

Eh, I don't really see how there's no punishment on the show. Now, granted, the show likes to show second chances being granted to some of the characters who did wrong, such as Luna, Discord, and Trixie, but most of the time the villains don't get punished straight out, which may lead those who want to see a "visual", "on-screen" punishment wanting more.

Gilda didn't get punished for being a bully or being a thief, but she lost one of her best friends in Rainbow Dash and likely will have experience further defeats down the road for being the way she is since she apparently didn't learn her lesson in that episode. She wasn't directly punished with a butt-whooping or a fine for stealing or anything.

Flim and Flam obviously got what was coming from them when they were driven out of town by the locals, but it was kind of obvious they didn't learn their lesson either. But they will continue to live on the edge with people hating them since they likely will continue their scamming ways. They weren't directly punished with a fine or jail time.

Discord caused chaos for a long time and got turned to stone, but that was probably due to Celestia and Luna thinking that was best. After he got reawakened, caused more chaos, and had to be turned back to stone, however, Celestia probably rethought everything and figured that reforming Discord would permanently solve the problem instead of just waiting for the next time he eventually breaks free of his stone prison to cause more chaos. Why not reform him? After all, her sister got a second chance, and knowing that Celestia is a strong believer in the magic of friendship, it figures that she thought that all Discord needed was a friend. Besides, Discord did get punished by getting turned to stone twice, Celestia probably just figured there was a better way than harsh punishment to solve the problem, especially when it was one that could keep coming back.

Chrysalis and her Changelings got flung far out of the Kingdom of Equestria, and considering that the ponies now know about Changelings, Celestia might just figure that it's not worth her time to send out Royal Guards to find her and her Changelings and seize them, especially since they could've gone into hiding. I'm not taking comic canon into account here either, as I know Chrysalis obviously is a villain in the comics, but this is strictly talking about the show. Regardless, Chrysalis got kicked out of the kingdom, her plans failed, and she likely can't try that same plan against Equestria again.

Iron Will wasn't a villain in my books as so much as a guy who was a little aggressive, but he actually did learn his lesson that sometimes there is another way other than being a butthole to others. He got punishment since he didn't get paid by Fluttershy, and the fact that he might be a bit remorseful over the way he's been teaching ponies to handle their life.

There's probably more examples, and I could go into Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon but honestly they get their just desserts all the time so I don't think they're worth bringing up. Plus Sombra, but obviously he got exactly what was coming to him so he doesn't fit the mold either.

I think the show does two things: characters are punished but in indirect ways that aren't as satisfying as, say, a serious tail-whipping, and characters get redemption more often than not.

*does a spit take about humans being inherently good.*

I believe in second chances,

but i'm kinda bummed no one's "struck out " so to speak.

that's not a very reliable message to send to the audience.
