cameo's in the comics?

This is one of the reasons I don't like the comics. Ever since issue 1, they've been completely overloaded with shout-outs and cameos, and it's not even clever, it's just annoying. The guys at IDW need to learn to tone it the hell down.

I kinda like it. just goes to reinforce rule 85 "If it exists, theres a pony version. No exceptions."

besides. alot of the cameos would only be known to an adults so its nod to the older bronies and I like that.

@@FNGRpony, Meh i don't really mind... Habsro tends to make references to other shows VERY often if you have noticed. There are even videos mentioning eveyone of them. I am not really surprised... and in fact i am really happy about it. It honors the show and the others mentioned.

The problem is that IDW can't pull it off. The writers and animator at DHX do a good job of blending the references in the story and know how to do it tastefully, but IDW shoves them down our throats. The cameos in the comics are out of place and detract from the story.

The overly flashy and illogical cameos look good in fan art, but it takes skill and finesse to pull it off in official material, something that the people at IDW don't seem to have.

Look at this list of shout-outs for MLP:FiM

http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/ShoutOut/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagic

And this one for the comics

http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/ShoutOut/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagicIDW

If you compare them and look at the way they're presented in the show and comics, you'll notice that the show's shout-outs tends to be more subtle and blended in the story, while the comic's shout-outs tend to be explicit and flashy visual refrences in the backgroud of many of the panels.

Look at the visuals and crowd scenes in the show. Now look at the very first crowd scene of the comics:

Notice the difference? The comic is overloaded with wacky situations and characters that would look completely out of place in the show. It breaks the immersion and makes the comics look like a wacky fanfic instead of as a canon work.

And I'm not even going into the questionable writing, inconsistent characterisation and useless scenes that contribute poorly to the story. The comics are good in a "weird hijinks" kind of way, but when you try to take them seriously as part of the FiM universe, they completely fall apart. IDW goes overboard with the aesthetics and references, while DHX knows how keep the shenanigans and shout-outs appropriate and under control.

Well i know there's a difference.  Flutter shy is some what more dark in the comic.  Why?  She appreciates nature.  Nature itself is kinda ghastly.  Now do i want our beloved flutter shy smiling about grim stuff?

Maybe not, but I can't say it doesn't make sense.

IF your telling me I should hate the comic cause it doesn't just focus on the main 6, we totally aren't in the same game.

1

the comic is canon ^^.  It covers a ton of crap the show just glosses over.

2

inconsistent characterization?   yeah cause we don't see that on the show and bitch about it every day.  (Sarcasm)

No seriously hit me with 5 great episode vs the comic.

I noticed the comic does seem to "mov it up" in the expressions a bit much.  It's a bit more ren and stimpy than mlp at times.

But hay I Loved the mov series.

snip

Maybe i'm a bit more forgiving of the comic because i'm in pony withdrawal.

I went though all the episodes i care to see, i was peaking at a little fan fiction, and it hit me
"wait a min... why aren't i peaking at the comic?"

I mean sense when did fan fiction become a bad thing.

Dante's infernal is a faction.  Is it a bad work?

1. I never even mentioned that, I don't know where you're getting this idea.

2. This is a bit tricky. The comics are approved by Hasbro and are canon in so far as they don't contradict the show, but the writers of the show can invalidate the comics at any time. Besides, the second story arc of the comics does a pretty good job of screwing up Luna's backstory and her introduction in Luna Eclipsed.

3. The show's characterisation problems are minor, I'm talking about things like the fact that IDW seems to be using the fandom version of Luna instead of the canon one, or the fact that issues 2 and 3 of the comics have the mane six fall for the same trick Discord pulled on them, except this time they knew how important their friendship was and they knew they were up agaisnt an enemy that can impersonate them.

1 I wasn't sure what the huff was about so I guessed.

2 Luna's story is screwed up (haven't gotten to that part in the comic saving it for the week end)

Shell i count the waves.

she returned after 1000 years.

Why?  I could b.s. that.  easily,  any writer could.  But they never even tried.  they could said "the stars are aligned."  An event that happens once in a thousand years," but they didn't.  But hay that's what season 4 is for.

3 You act as if once the main six learn a lesson they'll never make that mistake ever again.

That's entirely un realistic.  And they heard their friends trash them.  I felt their knee jerk reaction was the sorta thing a normal person would do.  that and some of the ponies like dash and apple jack are hot heads.  That six get along in spite of their differences.

I would think driving a temporary wedge between them would be pretty easy with 0 magical powers.

And for my final point of the comics being canon, in all likely hood the comic will be going 2 years after the show is dead and gone.

Look at comic adaptations of shows like bat man (the comic based on the cartoon)

or teen titans.

They lasted a while well after the show tanked.  at some point in time it's gonna be the only canon ^^

to quote ric flair,

like it or don't like it learn to love.
