Solar Sentinel

Solar sat there for a while, staring at the medallion that Moon Crypt intrusted to him. He had seen a similar design somewhere before but he couldn't put his hoof on it. His mind raced as he had to remember where he had seen it. After some time passed, He put it around his neck, hiding it behind his armor to keep it safe, before deciding to rejoin the remaining group of ponies.

It had been a few minutes since Moon and Lee left before Solar made his way back over to the group that remained. A serious look on his face as his mind wrestled the gravity of what he had just learned. He stood there almost in a daze, as he watched the two talk. Upon hearing his name mentioned, he put on a quick smile and slowly walked the rest of the way over to Sunny and Charcoal, Just watching them having fun, waiting to see how long it would take for him to be noticed.

Charcoal smiled. "Of course I'm sure. You are a wonderful pony and anypony would be lucky to have you." charcoal said. Her ear twitched a moment later when she heard movement. She smiled, knowing exactly who it was. "But if you really aren't sure, why don't you ask him yourself?"

Sunny froze in a blush as she caught Charcoal's meaning, humorously in mid dance. Quickly, she shot to a regular stance and brushed back a little mane hair that had come over her face shyly. "Oh...uh...howdy Solar..." She muttered, smiling habitually in an attempt to not give away what she had been doing.

Solar nodded to Charcoal and then looked to Sunny with a serious face.

 

"Sunny, I've done a lot of difficult things in my life, but this may be the hardest thing yet." As he walks towards the mare. "I don't know how to put this in words." As he swallowed. "Sunny, before I met you, I had forgotten what fun was. I like being around you ."

 

Solar looked over at Charcoal. "How am I doing?"

 Sunny blushed tremendously as it dawned on her what Solar was saying, leaning back in surprise as she stared at him. No way! The mare was about to jump into his hooves until she realized that that would probably give him second thought. Realizing this, she cleared her throat and leaned her head upon his chest with an enormous smile on her face. "Hold me Solar," she told him softly.

Charcoal chuckled. "I think you are doing just fine Solar, but I think the mare asked for a hug. You had better not keep her waiting." Charcoal takes a step back to give the two love birds a little bit more room. She knew what it was like to have fallen for somepony.

"Mrs. Page? She's the mayor of this little town," said Quick Shot, quietly, before Rock could answer. "I arrived here myself a few years ago on some mission for one of the nobles. Then I got hired by the mayor and I've lived here ever since."

 

Rock looked at Quick Shot queerly before he flipped over his cards, revealing that he had broken your win streak. "Well, looks like your luck ran out, Steel."

Jaeger sat for a moment before stepping out to smoke his cigar. He smirked when the thought of Solar being in charge. Hehe he is the perfect stallion for the job, hopefully not corrupted though he thought, stomping out his cigar and returning to his previous position. He came up silently behind Charcoal and hesitated before speaking. "You given them space eh? I had a feeling they liked eachother." He laughed, stepping beside Charcoal

Charcoal nodded. "Yeah. I hope it works out alright." Then she notices the cigar. "Hey, you have any more of those? I could feel like smoking right now." Charcoal says to Jaegar. "But if you don't, that's fine. I can manage without it. I jut feel like having one." Charcoal says.

Jaeger nodded slowly, looking over the two love birds before speaking. "Yeah i hope it works out as well." He said before turning his attention back to Charcoal as she asked it he had any more cigars. He nodded and pulled a pack that was wedged between one of his armor plates, opened it and extended the box for her to take one. "You need a lighter to? Ive got plenty." He smiled

Solar turned red, but smiled at Sunny as he wrapped his wing around her, holding her tight before awkwardly nuzzled her. This was his first romance. He could only hope that he was going about it right.

 

Solar looked up to see Charcoal and Jaeger looking at them, but put his attention back to Sunny.

Sunny giggled as she felt his wings around her, cuddling up close to him, "Wanna be my special somepony Solar?" She asked excitedly as she peaked at Charcoal between Solar's wings and winked. She then sat on her hind hooves and leaned against him flirtatiously while nuzzling into his exposed neck.

Charcoal nodded and took one of the cigars. "Yeah, I'm going to need to borrow a lighter. Didn't think to bring one of my own while packing for this. Hope you don't mind." Charcoal said, showing a little of her rougher side, but still keeping a lot of her shy, passive side.

Jaeger smiled and lit the cigar with a lighter he had pulled from a different section of his armor before lighting his own cigar. He returned the lighter and cigars to there original places. He chuckled and took a drag. "You know I never took you as one to smoke. You didn't seem like the type." He laughed

Solar's heart stopped for a second, his eyes grew wide and his mouth hung open. He wanted to say yes but no sound would come out. After a few seconds, the shock of her question started to wear off.

 

"...I...I'd like that.." As his face began to frown a little bit. "But I...I'm afraid. I l..lo...love to, but we can't risk it quite yet."

 

The big guards pony was almost in tears. "If something where to happen to you or me, would we be able to carry on the mission?"

 

"I'll be your special somepony if you'll be mine. Just promises me that if I get compromised, you'll do what has to be done, ok?" As Solar laid his head on hers, squeezing her tight with his wing.

Sunny frowned but chuckled a little, "I'll be doin' what I want Solar...you just worry too much." She placed a hoof upon his shoulder and latched onto him, nuzzling him slowly once more, "And ya'd best be gettin' used to lovins. I'm a hugger," she humored, bringing her normal smile back.

Charcoal chuckled as she took a drag. "Yeah, I get that a lot. And to be honest, I wouldn't he if it wasn't so hard to stop. Started when I was younger and got addicted. You know how it is. Stuff happens and I didn't know how to deal with it. Alcohol was out of my grasp, so smoking was all I had."

Jaeger listened to the mares story only making eye contact when he wasn't blowing a puff of smoke. He looked over to Solar and Sunny a few times as well. Seeing the ponies in love puzzled him. He turned his gaze back to Charcoal and this time he had a frown on his face. "Sorry to go off topic here, but.....do you know how true love feels....seeing Solar and Sunny, you and Lee. You all seem beyond happy......Ive felt love before but only for the blink of an eye...." he said trailing off as he stared at the ground.

Solar could feel a his heart dividing between the mission and the mare that made him happy.

 

"Sunny, I like being with you, and nothing will change that....it's just we have to put the mission. As field commander, I have a lot of responsibility for everypony, especially you, to get the mission done as fast as possible and with as little losses as possible. I can't show favoritism. If your the best pony for a job, that's who's going in. Same goes for Charcoal, Jaeger, even me."

 

A tear rolled down Solar's face as he finished. "Now let me do my job and will spend the rest of days together, ok?" He said with a smile.

"Alright Commander," she said as she slipped from his hooves and saluted, "Just do what ya gotta do." Sunny did her best to ignore how it felt to be told such but she tried to understand. She didn't want to be the reason for anything to go wrong as she had stated on the ship. She then turned abruptly and smiled at Charcoal before trotting away a short distance, "I gotta clean my mane. Be back shortly," she hollered back. It wasn't long before she finally found where she couldn't be seen and plopped to a sit with a frown on her face, only one tear falling to the ground. The mission had to come first...

Lee was knew he'd hit the jackpot of information when he heard the one name Quick Shot talk. He also garnered from the look that Rock gave him that this group knew quite a bit more about a lot of stuff then they were willing to let on. He was so busy mulling over this new information that he was surprised when Rock flipped over his cards. "How the hay...I need to focus." He was truly disappointed, he hoped to play his win streak out a bit longer, but that was the thing about luck, even with help, its still a fickle thing. He checked his bits situation. He'd gotten back some of the money he'd originally lost but not all of it. He'd lost quite a bit this round leaving him with about half the amount he'd come here with. He took out a few more bits, less then he'd been using though, being a little extra cautious with his funds, and readied for another round. "Hmm. She's the mayor? I'll probably have to go and talk to her. I'm not sure how long I'm going to be here but it may be a while. Do you know if anywhere is hiring? Any advice or anything I should know? Being new here and all?" He asked this casually, as he felt at the emotions around the table. Sensing nothing to alarming or important, he played, deciding to try to play without using his antenna to see how lucky he really was.

Solar reached a hoof after the mare, trying to keep a serious face. As she walked away, he looked down at the key that Moon gave him. He was thinking about all that weighed on his shoulder. He looked to Charcoal, thinking about what he was going to do.

 

"I have to take care of something." As he takes off after Sunny.

 

As he catches up to her, he just stares at her before walking up to her.

 

"Sunny, I don't know how to tell you this, so..." As he walks up and kisses the mare. "You have to keep this between us, Ok? I promises that when the mission is over, there will be a lot more where that came from Sunny Bunny."

Sunny was about to answer in astonishment and happiness, until suddenly she backed up and looked to the ground, her entire demeanor changing drastically. "No...The mission comes first and in all reality, you are a guardian of Celestia," the mare said seriously and accented differently. "For there to be any hope...for anypony...we have to remain apart." Sunny couldn't believe what she was saying...but, the expedition didn't require a happy-go-lucky mare...Solar was right in his words before. "By Celestia's grace, we cannot have any distractions," She then looked up to Solar with irritated pink eyes from her holding in her tears. "...ever..." Sunny turned her back to Solar as tears fell quietly, "...go...do your duty commander from the Celestia branch..."

Solar Sentinel

Solar looked at the mare and could see she was in tears. Not only was her heart breaking, but so was his. Without thinking, he shouted at the mare.

"FINE! Report back to camp in 5 minutes Private!"

 

Solar turned around and began walking back to the others. The soft spot in his heart had hardened. All he could feel is anger and duty. He did not like being this way. He had never yelled at a subordinate before. He didn't like it but he had to vent somehow.

As he made the trek back he stopped at the wood-line, staring at Charcoal and Jaeger before coming forth. He stood there at attention. His eyes red from tears, however his facial expression did not match his eyes. His face showed no emotion.

 

"OK everypony. This is now a military operation. As soon as Lord Moon Crypt gets back with Lee, We'll take the next logical step. Till then..." as Solar unsheathes his command sword. "We are going to spar to stay sharp and on our hooves. Anypony got any problem with that! Jaeger, Me vs you. Charcoal, You and Sunny when she gets back. That's an order!"
