Solar looked to Sunny and smiled. "Yep...I just needed to stretch my wings a bit....On the plus side, I found that Jaeger makes a great pillow for rough landings..."

 

Solar could not help but pick up on the sadness and disappointment in Charcoal's voice. "I'm sure he and Moon Crypt are just going over their recon plans...Nothing more. I'm sure he'll come out here to.....check on you..er us as soon as their briefing is done. You like him...I can see that. Look, I'm sorry about trying to pull rank earlier when we first met, it's just that I need everypony focused on the mission."

 

Solar hovered over top of Sunny smiling, looking to Charcoal before changing his expression to one of seriousness. "It may be hard to tell, but I think he is just confused. Changelings feed on love, so having somepony love them may just be something new to him, however, as a stallion, I can see that he looks at you with a slight twinkle in his eye. You just have to give it time."

Charcoal smiled. "It's fine. But I don't really see what rank has to do with this mission. We are all contributing something. None of us can do this alone. Your rank means nothing because we are all equal right now. Once you get back to your guard duty then it makes some difference, but not here."

"Look, I understand that now....I'm trying to apologize to you for that!" Solar said in an outburst, his ears laying flat, feeling ashamed because of it. "I'm sorry, OK. I'm nervous about this mission also. I was hoping that we could just forget about that and start over from the beginning."

 

Solar hovered over to the mare and extended a hoof. "I'm Solar Sentinel, Celestia Branch." hoping that the mare would accept his apology. Apologizing was a hard thing for him to do, his pride often got the best of him.

Charcoal smiles and shakes his hoof. "Charcoal Ember, Luna branch. And I forgave you a while ago, but it is kind of fun to mess with the emotions of ponies like you. I know I shouldn't have fun doing that, but it is to me, and I should really try and stop doing that."

Sunny smiled at the pair as they seemed to get along together, trotting up along Solar to pat him on the back but recoiling after the first pat from the healing cuts. As a result, she was impressed by his humility to Charcoal. Solar was a very kind pony past the stiff guard pony side. "You should be nicer to the poor guy Char. I'd bet money he'd have our back in just about any fight," she defended kindly, winking to Charcoal in the process before turning to the stallion, "And you shouldn't tease, Solar. I don't think Char had the best time with 'em." Sunny nudged Solar softly and ended with a smile.

Charcoal's expression darkens a little. "Well... they have just been... they have been a fear of mine for many years. Every since my little... rebellion as a filly. Long story short, I fell when the basket of a hot air balloon broke. Not sure how high it was, but I just barely survived."

Charcoal's expression darkens a little. "Well... they have just been... they have been a fear of mine for many years. Every since my little... rebellion as a filly. Long story short, I fell when the basket of a hot air balloon broke. Not sure how high it was, but I just barely survived."

Solar opens his mouth as if to say something, but decides not to for the moment, thinking of how to word his question as not to offend the mare.

 

"I don't mean any offense as I can see that it would be traumatizing to anypony, but...well...I don't know how to word this...." as he looks to the mare's side. "You do have wings."

Solar turns red. "I'm sorry if I offended you, that came out wrong. You don't have to answer that."

Charcoal's expression darkened even more. "I know I have wings. But here is the problem, I can't use them. My wings don't work, they never have and they never will. I was born with a condition that made the muscles in my wings not develop correctly. I can still move them, I just can't fly with them."

Solar's face was as pale as a ghost. How could he have just asked that. "I....I....I'm sorry that I brought it up. It must be difficult to talk about, and your very brave to discuss it with somepony you just met of some mission." as Solar was slowly getting some of his color back. "If there's anything you want to ask me...No matter what it is...feel free to ask. It's the least I can do for you."

Charcoal wiped away the tears that had started to form. "No it's alright, you couldn't have known. And while it is a sensitive subject for me it is something I have gotten used to answering. You don't need to worry about it." Charcoal said. She was doing her best to calm down, but it was a slow process.

"Your sure there's nothing we can do to take your mind off of it?" Solar said with a concerned look on his face, trying to comfort the mare. "Would you to like to hear the most embarssing thing that has ever happened to me? It's good for a few laughs at least, and to be honest, I think it's the reason I got to be so close with the Princess over the years."

"Are you sure there's nothing I can do since I fell my bringing it up made you feel this way. I can go back in the ship and drag you changeling friend out here for you." He said with an uneasy laugh, trying to cheer her up.

 

Solar reached into his bag, pulling out one of the remaining coins and placed it in her hoof.

 

"Here. You've earned this through your bravery. You didn't have it tell me, but yet you did. You where honest with me which I appreciate...though you got under my skin when we first met...Anyhow you should not be ashamed of your wings, they are the reason you are the brave and smart mare you are today. Right Sunny!, as Solar looked over to her.

Charcoal smiled. "I realm would like it if you could get Lee for me." She looked at the coin. "Thanks for the coin and all, but... I'm not really sure if I really deserve this. I know you said all those things for why I should have it, but I don't think I could accept this."

Sunny nodded in agreement with Solar, smiling proudly as he placed the coin in Charcoal's hoof. "Of course Solar...and you deserve every bit of that there coin. Remember what I told ya earlier or do I have to sing ya another song?" she teased happily, turning to wink at Solar.

Sunny frowned upon Charcoal's answer, her ears dropping sadly to her side. "Ya need to smile more Char...we're your friends..." she mentioned, holding out her hoof gingerly towards the mare before looking to Solar for some kind of backup in the situation.

Solar stopped mid sentience. "Yea, I'm going to shut up now..."

As Solar turned to go get Lee, Sunny was already in front of him, eyeing him with quite the serious look for the usually happy mare. "What do you mean if something happens to you? Nothin' gonna happen to anypony ya hear...especially not you." She blushed a little at the last part, quickly trying to brush it away with a smile.

The look Sunny gave Solar was enough to stop him dead in his tracks, as he looked the mare in her eyes, as if stairing into her heart.

"Sunny, I didn't mean anything by it, I just like to be prepared for everything. Celestia knows what we may run into, besides, I have to keep myself safe if I want to live to see that date." he said, trying to lighten up the tone.

This whole time, Lee had been in with Moon Crypt, going over some final plans of the town. He had shifted back to his usual form for now to avoid confusion, but was ready to get going at a moments notice. "Hey, I'm going to go check up on some of the others before we head off, ok?" He asked Moon Crypt. Then he felt something from a ways off the ship. "Uh, yeah, excuse me. You felt that right? Some pony is talking about something very...emotional again. I'm going to check it out." @

 

He turned around and walked off the ship. Feeling the emotions growing stronger, he started to trot, then broke in to a run as he crested a hill and the group came in to view. He slowed down, and stopped just in time to hear Solar say something about something happening to him. He saw Sunny turn around and almost tripped over himself at the amount

of passion he felt come out of her next sentence.

As he picked himself up, he had to suppress a laugh. Solar had no idea how Sunny felt about him...did he? He walked over next to Charcoal and smiled at her. "Hey, what'd I miss?"

Sunny nodded knowingly at Solar, "You'd better alright?" she said ending her serious tone. She then turned to Lee with a beaming smile, "Hey there Lee. We we're just talkin' about comin' and gettin' ya. Char was gettin' worried." Sunny brushed up against Solar softly as she continued past him to greet Lee.

Lee smiled at Sunny. "Hey Sunny, why does it seem like you guys have all your heart to heart talks without me? I was on the ship and I could feel something big brewing out here. Wow, when you ponies get emotional, you really get emotional. What happened? I thought I just heard Solar talking about Dying..."
