                                   Island of the Dark Mountain

 

It was a beautiful day out. Just perfect for an scenic airship cruise over the Fillippine Islands. There was not a cloud in the sky, The sea was a beautiful aquamarine, and the view of the islands was positively stunning. It was the time of their life for some ponies, and maybe not so much for some others. But for two certain best friends this certainly not the case.

 

River: "Would you look at that view. It's just beautiful! Have you seen the view Pat?"

 

Pat: "Indeed I have! You've said the same thing about ten times!"

 

They both laughed. Patterson snapped a few shots with his camera.

 

"I didn't know that you liked to take pictures."

 

"I don't! But Mom does!"

 

They laughed again.

 

"Yeah. That much is true. She must have fifty albums full."
 

"She commissioned me to take pictures for her, and if I come back empty hooved she'd kill me.(Pat paused for a moment) I hate to break you away from the scenery, but I could really go for some food. You want to go get some?"

 

"Sure I'd like to get something to eat."

 

They went down bellow deck to the kitchen.

Blasted Nova was sitting on the deck of the ship, lying on a beach recliner and catching rays. The stallion felt as if he needed a vacation from everything back in Equestria. He liked adventuring, but he just needed some time to himself to relax. What better way to do that than on a cruise? 

 

"Aw yeah. Nothin' gets better than this." Blast said to himself, watching the seagulls fly by through his sunglasses and drinking an orange soda. "The view from here is just great! Knowing that I just have to kick back and not have to get myself out of danger sometimes just feels... feels great."

 

The stallion couldn't help but smile to himself.

Ember leaned over the railing of the airship, watching the scenery pass by underneath them.  "Wow...  Usually I'm lookin' up at sights, seems pretty weird to be lookin' down at 'em..."  He chuckles quietly, trying not to let his mind focus on the oceans below them.  His gaze was completely focused on the islands - not on the water at all.

 

He still was a little nervous about having signed up for this ride, but he didn't feel like he'd had much of a choice.  If his sister had ever found out he'd passed up on something like this in his travels, she would have dragged him all the way back to sign up for one with her...  Was better to save him the extra trip!

 

The unicorn pulls himself away from the railing to look about the airship for a moment, readjusting his saddle bags as he did.  They were far too light for his liking - he had far too few of his creations with him, or the reagents he'd use to make more of them, but there wasn't much other choice.  Taking potentially flammable items onto an airship like this was just asking for trouble, so he'd left most of them back on the mainland.  He tilts his head as he looks about, slowly walking about the main deck.  "I wonder how this thing works?  Hmm..."  Letting his mind drift with ideas of what could be keeping the airship afloat, Ember gradually starts making his way below deck to see what the inside of the airship looked like.

Glacier sat on the floor in her cabin. It was a fairly large one, lavishly decorated with fine artworks, large sofas and chairs and flawless oak tables. Slowly, she rose to her hooves and began to try and push the tables to the side of the room. It wouldn't budge. All of the furniture was stuck to the floor of the cabin. Glacier growled, left her cabin and headed towards the deck of the ship.

 

'This is so dull! I can't believe I let myself get talked into this.This isn't luxury at all. The rooms are too cramped and there's no way of moving the furniture without ripping out the floor and there's a vegetarian menu. Why can't something exciting happen?'

 

On the main deck of the airship, Glacier felt a little more comfortable. She shielded her eyes from the sun with a hoof so she could get a proper look at what was around. It was nowhere near as enclosed as her cabin but it was still as uninteresting. Deck chairs and sun loungers littered the floor but it was otherwise empty.

 

Before she could return to her room, Glacier's vision started to blur and her face paled slightly. She recognised the feeling and it was not one she enjoyed. She dashed to the edge of the ship and leaned over the railings. When she felt comfortable she wasn't going to hit the edge of the ship, she retched and vomited over the edge.

Blasted Nova continued to look upwards into the sky. It was a perfect day to catch some sun rays, not a single cloud in the sky. Though, that relaxation came to a screeching halt when he saw a stallion run over to the railing. He noticed that he then proceeded to vomit over the side of it.

 

"How appealing..." Blast said to himself in a low mumble. He then lifted up his sunglasses to look towards the stallion. "Hey, is something wrong?" Blast asked him.

(Glacier's a mare, by the way.)

 

Glacier took a shaky step back from the edge of the ship. She was still pale and was now slightly drained of energy. Slowly, she turned to face a scarlet pony who had started to talk to her. "No, everything's fine,"  Glacier said sarcastically, a minute remnant of vomit still on her muzzle. "I'm just, you know, vomiting off the side of a large airship into some otherwise pristine oceans."

 

Gently dropping to the ground with her hooves round her stomach, Glacier began to think. 'Oh... how can I be feling like this? I'm never usually this sick and it can't be something I ate. I must be air sick or something.'

"Yeah, because that's normal." Blast said to the mare. He thought that he should ask her if her trip was going alright for her, but he answer would prove to be a huge understatement. The scarlet earth pony then noticed the mare dropping down towards the ground and handed her a paper towel. "You've got a small something riiight there." Blast informed her, referring to the bottom of her mouth.

Glacier took the paper towel from Blast's hoof. She ran it around her mouth  until she found the "small something"and rubbed ferociously. When she felt she had finished, she held it out in front of her. "Can I keep the napkin?" she asked. "I've got a terrible feeling it won't be the last time I need it."  An ache shot through Glacier's belly as she stumbled to her hooves, causing her to wince slightly.

Blast nodded and put his sunglasses back on. The mare didn't seem too happy to be stuck on this ship. She didn't look like she was one for being out at sea.

Perhaps she just needed somepony to talk to for awhile.

"May I ask what your name is, Miss?" Blast asked the mare.

Glacier wasn't quite sure why the pony in front of her wanted to talk. So far all she'd done was use up a paper towel and disrupt the pony's cruise by vomiting off the ship. Groggily, she walked towards a recliner and sat on it. "My name's Glacier,"  she said with her eyes closed on her hooves on her head. "Glacier Shard. What about you?"

They got to the stairs that go bellow deck.

 

River: "Ah, my old nemesis. Stairs!"

 

Pat: "*Pfft*They don't stand a chance against you."

 

River uses her telekinesis to lift her wheelchair safely down the flight of stairs, and Patterson follows behind. They continued on to the kitchen where they went up to the counter, ordered some food, and sat at a table to eat.

Ember continued to roam about the airship, his curiosity getting the better of him as he tried to look over as much of it as possible.  He didn't have a chance of understanding how it worked, he was sure, but it was still interesting to look around.  Better than the sight of the oceans under them anyways.  Fizz would love this...  Maybe I should take her on one of these for her next birthday...  

 

In his wandering, Ember was more focused on the ship around him than the where he was actually going.  So much so that he didn't notice the descending stairs in front of him.  As his hoof stepped down onto empty air, the unicorn yelled out in surprise.  Yelling didn't exactly stop him from falling face-first down the stairs, but it seemed like a logical reaction at the time.

 

Sitting at the bottom of the stairs, Ember held a hoof to his head and tried to clear his vision.  He didn't seem hurt, just really dizzy...  A few harmless sparks flew out of his broken horn as he tries and fails to get up, taking a couple deep breaths before standing up for real.  "Ugh...  Tell me nopony saw that..?"  He glances around, trying to get his bearings on where he'd ended up.  It seemed to be the ship's mess hall - at least one good thing from his short fall!

Patterson looks up from his meal after hearing quite a clatter arise from the direction of the staircase, where he saw a black unicorn staggering around, trying to regain his balance. River turned around and looked over to him as well, but remained silent.

 

Pat: "I say. Excuse me sir, are you alright?"

 

He asked as he began to get up from the table to help.

Ember grinned and shut his eyes when he heard the voice asking about him, turning his head towards the direction of the speaker.  The stallion lifts one hoof to rub at the back of his neck, incidentally knocking loose a small cloud of soot and ash from his mane as he does.  "Hehe, yeah, I'm fine.  I just hit my head, I've always been told I'm kinda hard headed so it worked out pretty well."  The stallion may have been blushing in embarrassment, his dark coat would make it difficult to tell though.

 

He opens his eyes to see who was checking on him, tilting his head just a little.  A couple more sparks fly from his broken horn before he crosses his eyes to look up at it, focusing to make them stop.  "Eh, hehe, sorry about that.  Thanks for your concern.  Name's Ember, by the way.  Ember Sparx.  Maybe you've heard of me?  My fireworks are going to be famous all over Equestria one day, after all!"  

 

Ember laughs at that comment, though it quickly dies off and his ears droop.  "Nah, I'm just kidding, I know you haven't heard of me.  Really nopony has...  Yet, anyways."  The stallion's goofy grin is quickly back on his face - he would seem to be in fairly good spirits for having just taken a tumble down the staircase.

Well, This stallion seemed pretty cheerful, and a little younger than Patterson thought at first glance.

 

Pat: "Well hello there. I'm Patterson, and that's River.(He says pointing towards the table) Pleased to make your aquaintance.

 

River just went back to her food.

 

"Sorry, she is very shy. She has had a rough past."

 

Pat kept looking at the stallion's broken horn, but decided to put that thought away for the time being.

 

"So how are you enjoying the trip?"

 

He asked, trying to keep the conversation going.

Blast smirked and took off his sunglasses. He then put his soda down and got up.

"I'm Blasted Nova, the fastest stallion in Equestria, coming close to that of Rainbow Dash." The stallion enlightened in the cockiest of tones. "I've been everywhere in these parts. Appleoosa, Manehatten, Mirror Pool, you name it! I'm also an adventuring enthusiast. It's one of my great passions."

Ember smiles at the pair of them, one of his ears flicking a little.  "Oh, swell to meet ya.  And that's alright, nothin' wrong with being a little shy."  

 

In answer to Pat's question, Ember chuckles a little before shrugging.  "I think it's been great so far, personally.  The airship is kinda amazing...  Could do for a trip that didn't go over the ocean next time, and maybe a big warning light over the stairs, but other'n that I've nothing to complain about!"

 

The stallion grins and flicks his tail, a couple flakes of ash falling out of it as he does.  "I hope the two of you are havin' a fun trip as well?  Before I kinda fell into the middle of your dinner, I mean...  Sorry about that, by the way.  Didn't intend ta interrupt ya."

Pat: "It's alright. This trip has been amazing for us as well. River loves the scenery, it's absolutely breathtaking. I was thinking that it might be nice to explore one of those islands down there, but I guess that will have to wait for another time."

 

Patterson watched as a few more ash flakes fell out of Ember's tail and drifted slowly to the deck of the mess hall. Then remembering what he had said before...

 

"So, I take it that you are into fireworks?"

"So you're one of the fastest ponies around?" ​ Glacier replied. "That's pretty useful. And about this past spent adventuring, what sort of places have you been to? Manehatten and Appaloosa aren't particularly adventurous."

 

Glacier began to feel dizzy again so she got off of the chair and rolled into a ball on the ground. She kept her eyes and closed and groaned slightly. "Have you got any tips on how to get rid of this sickness?"  Glacier asked. "I'm stuck on this airship now and I may as well make the trip as tolerable as possible."

"How about you sit down for a bit and collect your barrings. Or just take some deep breaths" Blast pulled up a chair for the new mare and sat back down into his. He could easily tell she wasn't having a nice time here. Maybe she just needed a moment.

 

"Well, I've actually been cloud jumping up in Cloudsdale recently." Blast bragged in his brash tone. "The clouds were sort of like trampolines. I still can't believe they let me, and earth pony, even go near that place, let alone go around jumping everywhere."

Listening to Nova's story about his adventure bored Glacier. She knew what adventuring was a jumping off of a cloud certainly wasn't it. 'That's not an adventure. Any pony given a spell that lets them walk on clouds can do that. It's an extreme sport at a push,"  she thought. 

 

Given her current well being and the fact she was still feeling a little queasy, Glacier was in no mood to incite a row. The best she could manage to air her views was a grunt and a shrug. Whilst shrugging, she could see that Nova had pulled up a second chair and had moved to it. She slowly wormed towards it and pulled herself onto it. She then curled back into a ball. 

 

'I hate this thing. I need to get off as soon as possible. I don't care if we get hijacked or we crash, I just need to get back on the ground.'

((I'm so sorry!  My mobile notifications were broken and I lost track of this thread because of it!))

 

 Ember grins widely at the mention of his work, nodding vigorously.  "Yessir!  Not the lazy magical fireworks some ponies are happy with, either.  I work with top-notch, hoof made products!"  He chuckles quietly, one of the stallion's ears flicking.  

 

"I'd be more'n happy ta show ya, but I had to leave almost all my supplies back on shore...  Figured bringin' flammable and potentially explosive products on a flyin' airship wasn't a good idea."  Ember grins again, seemingly having forgotten the fact that he'd just fallen down a flight of stairs to catch himself with his face.  Talking about his work usually had that effect on the unicorn.

((OOC: It's OK. I'm a little worried about everypony who has not joined yet and I don't want to progress the story to quickly.))

 

Pat: "Yeah, I can understand that much." (That seemed kind of obvious) Wouldn't want to burn the ship out of the sky. But what exactly do you mean by "not the lazy magical fireworks"?

 

He asked, a little intrigued at the description of his work.

Ember huffs slightly and waves a hoof.  "Oh, some unicorns are happy shooting a bolt of magic out of their horn, letting it explode, and call that a firework...  It may look the same, at least ta someone who isn't dedicating their life to it, but they're worlds apart!"

 

"Those magic 'fireworks' are pretty, but there's no art to 'em.  Heck, I've met foals that could shoot sparks out of their horns, why not call those the same thing?  Real pyrotechnics is a passion, working with the raw materials, the smell of burning rock...  Sometimes the smell of burning fur..."  The singed areas around Ember's mane would suggest that the last comment happens to him more than just 'sometimes'.  "Nah, the magic bolts just don't compare.  Real pyrotechnics is an art.  And art is an explosion!"
