movies/tv one of the greatest actors of our age has died

He had achieved his destiny. He completed the task he was put here to do. He lived the acting dream. It's sad that he went when he was only 46; I hope his family, friends, fellow thespians, etc. pass through their grief into serenity quickly.

Watch "Synecdoche New York" tonight in his honor, after the Super Bowl ends. You will leave the film with greater understanding.

This is going to sound stupid, but who? I'm one of those people that can count the actors I know by name on one hand(I only figured out who Brad Pitt actually was in the last couple years, it's that bad).

Philip Seymour Hoffman won the Academy Award for Best Actor in 2005 for playing the titular character in "Capote" (the author Truman Capote), was nominated for alot of other awards during his lifetime for his acting, tended to star in movies with more depth and meaning than the usual blockbuster fare (though he was also in Twister); some of them are meh, some of them are really good.

Philip to me is Freddy Lounds from Red Dragon. I just think of that character most on account of loving the book. Sad times...

Also, this will probably be vastly overshadowed by the Superbowl and that's terrible. :(

Usually celebrity deaths leave me unfazed, but this one hit me hard. RIP.

This. SNY is one of my favorite films. I'd also recommend watching any of his collaborations with Paul Thomas Anderson: Magnolia, The Master, Boogie Nights, and Punch-Drunk Love being among the notable ones. I feel that those works will be the ones he is ultimately remembered for.

He's a several time award-winning actor. According to his IMDB, he's won 73 awards, including a Golden Globe, an Academy Award, an Oscar, a BAFTA, and tons of others. He was in The Big Lebowski, Twister, all of the Hunger Games movies, Almost Famous, etc.

Another film in which I think he gave a good performance was the 25th hour directed by Spike Lee. I think it's a very underrated movie. Plus, if you're interested in that sort of thing, it's got some really poignant shots of the world trade center site just a few months after 9/11

I see.

I guess I'm just pop-culturally challenged(or maybe he's just never been in something that appeals to me)
