Blaze Bronson 343 February 5, 2014 Share February 5, 2014 @@Miss Reaper, Interesting, I have actually thought about such an ability before. And this power have a cool "effect". I designed a character in my head having this ability. He forged a sword he put so much effort into, he barely had to think about it without it disappearing. So he could sleep and it would still be there. However if he were to die, the sword would vanish. This idea lead to me thinking of jewelry made this way. Giving your loved one a necklace or a ring created by your magic. =) There is no way this hasn't been done in some anime or movie though, so it's probably not that original. But personally I haven't seen this situation anywhere, and I think it's cool 1 OC: Blaze Bronson (Drawing by Digiral)
ReverieRiver 526 February 5, 2014 Share February 5, 2014 @@Blaze Bronson, Oooh, that actually does sound pretty neat! Being able to have a piece of jewelry to give to somepony, a crystal made entirely of magic... I imagine it would be so sparkling, shimmering and pretty... I might just have to make it so she could do that! Like... smaller constructs such as jewelry don't require much thought, while larger objects would take more concentration to upkeep.

Silverhoof 2,844 February 6, 2014 Author Share February 6, 2014 (edited) Well, I registered Cyan into the database, the only thing is I don't have a drawing ready and some of the back story needs a little tweaking, if anyone really wants to see it it's right here, feel free to criticize: http://mlpforums.com/page/roleplay-characters/_/cyan-blue-wip-r5758 Sorry for being off topic. Some of his powers include: The ability to make other ponies appear when they really aren't there. To create the Illusion of pain when they aren't physically damaged in any way. To make himself and other ponies look bigger and more fierce/threatening. and other standard unicorn spell OK, this is enough for anyone to work with. Your description is clear without detailing a myriad of spells. I like the character. To me this level of magic would indicate some level of magical training. With Canterlot as your starting location that an easy thing to work into a back story. Ariel here is supposed to be talented with older magic; the kind found in the dusty, leather-bound spellbooks, possibly written in an archaic language. And aside from that, I honestly am not very certain what types of spells she would want to or could use anyway. OK, I read Ariel's profile. You can have a lot of fun with "Old Magic." For one it allows for self training and the discovery of ancient magical tomes. I might list a few favorite spells, but it is enought to say she has discovered a few spellbooks and spends time rediscovering ancient magic. Your character looks already developed. But if you'll take a critique, I would make her less dark and more delighted with being possible the sole owner of ancient magics. she could use divination spells to summon spirits who have not remained static but have embraced technology themselves. Say a protective factory spirit will tell her what is being secretly built inside, or a leprechaun who helps her with computers, maybe even hacking for her. Lightning spells can either recharge batteries or wreck havoc with computer systems. summoned dragons might not be unstoppable like they once were, but they would at least be as dangerous as a tank, and much more maneuverable. and would freak out security forces. Try reverse techno spells. That fancy computer is now an abacus. All those machine guns are now bow and arrows.Too bad security never trained in such. You character can be a LOAD OF FUN! just play with a few ideas and I'll bet ariel has a ton of apprentice wanna-bes showing up at her door. of course dark corporate and govt types might want this books too, as will surviving schools of dark magic. ~~ Here is an example of a OC I decided not to go with (all my OCs are named Silverhoof. please don't laugh). This OC was based around the discovery of an old tome of magic, the spell is silly, but can be very useful. In fact I gave up on the character because the signature spell made him too powerful, and would make a lot of work for any game master: The world changed when Silverhoof was eight years old. Poking around in his attic, he uncovered a chest he had never seen before. It bore the initials, “T.S.” Inside was a treasure trove of knickknacks and doodads, everything an eight year old would treasure. But a leather bound tube drew his attention. Inside was a scroll, yellowed with age. Silverhoof took it to the window. He was a good reader for his age. His horn glowed and the scroll unfurled before his eyes. It was hand written, but the words were strange. He mouthed the words as best he could, trying to make sense of it. Each sentence seemed like fire, etching itself in his mind. He awoke the next day in a hospital. The doctors said all his tests were fine, but they wanted to keep him overnight for observation. His father took the family home while his mother made plans to stay overnight. Coming back to the room, she heard a strange voice. Was someone reading to her son? Peering in, she saw a book in his lap. The voice was coming from the book! A page turned by itself. “Daring Doo snuck past the guards and…oh. You’re asleep. We'll pick up here tomorrow, little master.” The book closed, and all was quiet. Footnote: Spell Rune Speak. With this spell, Silverhoof can hold a discussion with any form of writing, temporarily granting it intelligence, speech and knowledge of its contents. He can talk to runes etched in a wall, or discuss problems with his school books. A map will kindly place a red dot where he is upon it, and create a dotted line for him to follow. All writing is kindly disposed to Silverhoof and will help him if they can. Even runes written in a foreign language will be pleased to translate for him (though such writing will speak with a foreign accent). --such talkative runes can speak to anyone in his vicinity. If an illustration exists, it will animate in order to talk with him. Otherwise a mouth will appear, or the book covers will open and close like a puppet. He once got thrown out of a library because he asked where the history section was, all the history books shouted, “Over here!” Apart from the alterations mentioned above, Silverhoof cannot change the words or disguise the content in any way. This Silverhoof was a good concept for a story, no so much role play. While you do have some good ideas there, I was thinking of simply changing my original idea out in favor of the ability to create "magical constructs." Read up a little and you'll see what I'm talking about. Also, if Ariel did have such abilities and grew up in present-day Ponyville, she might would have enjoyed said abilities. But as mentioned before, in the future, most unicorns have a fairly bleak view about themselves and their magic. Padlock-Keys 57 February 7, 2014 Share February 7, 2014 I only have three unicorn OC’s and they are Wind-Chime, Apple Tea and Heroic Tea. The only one who really uses magic aggressively is Heroic Tea so the only time I’d have to make up a ‘logical’ spell-list would be for Heroic Tea. The rest on the other two I’m just plot-driven with their bios mainly because they don't do much that requires an explination or a full list in the first place. I'm sure if you have a reason like a plot already set in mind or something like that, then why put it there? Apple Tea's story is basically she was from Manehatten and her parents owned a little bakery/tea shop there that didnt do so well and after their (non-tragic) deaths she moved the shop to Ponyville. No particular reason why, but she just did. She relocated and settled in the small town and eventually was friendly rivals with Sugar Cube Corner and they offered her some supplies whenever she was low on stock, etc. etc. She met my OC Padlock whose kinda like a detective pony as he was on a case to find out a missing-kidnapped Filthy Rich. So really she doesnt need an explination behind her magic. Apple Tea just uses hers like Rarity does. Really. But her son, Heroic Tea pretty much is a student for Twilight later down the story and she (Twilight and Hero) are studying to enroll in something important (may it be an olympic games or a big academy test where he has to study, IDK). So then I'd have to explain his backstory a bit more with magic. No need to stress over it but the best thing you could possibly do is not rush. Don't post a really badly unfinished copy, make sure friends and BETA's read it over before posting and even if you are sure that probably means its not ready yet. Sorry to be a donkey-butt but thats probably the truth. Reality is cruel 8/ Though on the other hand the more hard work you put into it the better you'll feel once you actually get feedback, trust me. It pays off. Just pace yourself and everything will work out. Tis what I'm trying to do with my current works and my depression and actually its turning out rather well. Painted Lattice 131 February 9, 2014 Share February 9, 2014 (edited) I see what you're saying, def. I have a unicorn OC that I'm in the works of designing (and would REALLY love some feedback on her please, can you hop over here and toss a remark? I'm not shamelessly advertising, honest; just in need of feedback is all) and the reason I chose her is because unicorns in the show seem to be either intelligent or creative as though that's an inherent unicorn trait. I think what race you choose to make your OC depends on what kind of traits you want. Unicorns are smart or creative and can use magic, each has at least one special ability. Pegasus ponies can fly and tend to be athletic, but of course this can be subverted like in the case of Flutters. And then Earth ponies are typically talented with things the other ponies are not, like food. Earth ponies are hard workers in some way or another, AJ with the apple farm or Pinkie with how hard she works at making others happy. They seem to pour their hearts into their jobs. ('Course Rarity does too but I mean I'm just trying to see general trends with the different types of ponies.) Lastly, alicorns are reserved for the elevated princess role and I think they should be avoided in making OCs. Silverhoof 2,844 February 9, 2014 Author Share February 9, 2014 (edited) I thought about putting my OC on there (it's a Pegasus), but I couldn't think of a good story for him. I think most people just put their OCs there for the sake of having a character present or to show off their art. Well a good story can flow from many ideas. You could build a character from the skills you want him to have. If you want him to have combat skills, make a former royal guard. His tour of duty is up and now he is free to pursue his life but he still keeps his weapons and armor (always ready). --with such a foundation its easy to come up with 20 different back stories. If you want a more magical oriented pegasus, give him skills in weather control. He may not fling lightning from his hooves, but any little cloud can serve as an attack platform raining lightning upon his enemies. A lot of interesting characters have no real special combat abilities. The everyman is one whom readers can most identify with. Skills in music, athletics (overdone), or adventuring (like Daring Do), compliment these well. The Dwarves who marched with Thorin are mostly of this last type. They answered Thorin's call. Loyalty and a willing heart was all he could ask for. Some skills identify the character without being useful to an RP or a story. A rare disease befalls a townspony, and a toymaker must travel to Canterlot to find the cure. Start a thread and bounce some ideas here: http://mlpforums.com/forum/26-creative-resources/ You will be amazed at the quality of the advice you get.
