Any suggestions for a new writer?

Hey everypony!  I'm going to start writing some fan fiction soon and though I have a few ideas floating around in my head I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions or ideas that might help me get started.  I am an experienced writer, but this is my first try at MLP fan fiction

I find secondary ponies like Trixie or Lyra or Fancy Pants to be good, since they're established characters but you have a lot more flexibility than with a Mane Six member.

 

That said, I have no idea what you want to write, or what you're good at writing. Shipfic? Adventure? Slice of life? Comedy? Horror? If you ask me to choose from several options I can help, but "what should I write?" is awfully open-ended.

For a brand new writer, I would suggest sticking with the mane 6 or other really popular characters like Vinyl for example. You want people too see your writing and have an idea for it before you get more indepth with things.

 

I would try and find a niche which fits how you want to write best. Mine happened to be sad/slice of life/romance, but for you it could be anything. Its a matter of trying them out and discovering which one comes naturally to you best. 

 

Also, sit down and try to come up with ideas of what you want to write about. I could easily hand you a bunch of ideas, but that defeats the purpose a bit to me. To make it really your story, you should be the one coming up with the ideas

Here's something. BE ORIGINAL! The last thing you want to do is be in a clichéd category of fan-fiction.

@@Steel Sunrise, it would help to know what genres and themes you enjoy writing. Romance? Comedy? Adventure? Certain characters are easy to slot into certain categories.

 

Second, don't worry so much about "being original" when it comes to plot. Unless you have some came-to-you-in-a-dream story idea, someone has probably written a similar story before. So go for originality in how you approach certain characters, or your writing style. Myself? I'm overly sarcastic with ridiculous amounts of dry humor. Sure, it can be another Applejack/Rarity shipfic, but it'll read differently than the legions of other AJ/Rara stories.

Thanks everypony! I would like to apologize for the vagueness of my initial post, I guess what I was looking for was a little bit of inspiration from experienced fan fic writers. I've got a few ideas that I think I'm going to run with. Again I wanted to thank you all for your advice.
