Whatevs 377 February 19, 2014 Share February 19, 2014 Hilariously enough, there are people who are trying to imply that Rarity's generosity song was not Rarity being generous at all and she was simply stroking her ego or something. A pretty twisted way of looking at it. The song is actually about her seeing the opportunity to be generous and capitalizing on it. The only possible way this can be aggrandizing is because she happens to be singing about it. Let's look at the lyrics and simply take then at face value Oh, Manehattan, what you do to me Such a huge bustling community And there's always opportunity To do the friendly thing Generosity, I'm here to show all that I can give Generosity, I'm here to set the bar Just sit back and watch how I live Both parts are about her seizing the opportunity and showing what she can do for its own sake. Some may say, "Rarity, Don't be so big-hearted and bold Treating strangers like they're friends This town's too big and cold" But this is how I play my cards I'm not about to fold Where I see a frown, I go to town Call me the smile patrol About her doing it because it is right Manehattan, I'm here just for you Just for you Again, she sees this as an opportunity. The song is about her seeing the opportunity to be generous for its own sake. There's nothing that indicates she is doing it for her own aggrandizement beyond simply singing about it. Which is pretty flimsy, because one could simply argue that she's singing about it because she enjoys being generous so much. Afterall, the whole episode is about her generosity being forgotten in response to being taken advantage of. So it makes sense that her generosity is genuine because that is the theme of the episode. But really this is just a weak attempt by people who don 't like Rarity to subject others to how they see her.
Scootalove 10,692 February 19, 2014 Share February 19, 2014 Finally, someone gets it! The song doesn't really matter anyway, even if the theme of the episode is Rarity's generosity we don't have to question how she portrays her generosity in the episode. Stroking her ego? Not even close. 1 Credit: Moony © Forum FAQ Forum Rules

ghostfacekiller39 23,879 February 19, 2014 Share February 19, 2014 I haven't seen "stroking her ego" been cited as a thing, but Rarity hate has always been nothing but flawed, closed-minded opinions, for the most part, so I wouldn't worry about it too much. People live vicariously through negativity, and Rarity is just an easy target. That's all there is to it. As for the song itself... Motion Spark 7,811 February 19, 2014 Share February 19, 2014 (edited) her song talks about the opportunity to be generious, the visuals shows her being generous already. Contradictory much? This episode delivered probably the more serious, realistic leveled plotline ever in the show, I honestly appreciate that. That's one of those episodes that doesn't need much comedy because they're interesting the way they just are while you watch silently. However, I dislike the song along with the visuals, not because they were bad made it was because generosity is not a trait unique to each person (or pony in this case), talking about how generious you are, or how generious you could be kills the purpose of being genuinelly generous because you're forcing attention onto you, generosity is a desinterested act of kindness. You don't announce for everyone to see that you're generous! Another thing, it was odd seeing Rarity giving away her gems for no reason, oh take my fabulous scarf that I never needed anyway, like really Rarity?. I don't need to see this to know how generous Rarity really is. This song was also too long, those 4 minutes could've been used for something more useful. The storyline was scattered IMO, she says in the song this town's too big and cold. It's funny I couldn't feel the 'coldness' of the town, and it's even funnier because Manehattan is the reflection of the real New York and from what I've heard of, people is not nice there. Sure, ponies were a bit hostile while Rarity tried to catch a cab, but that wasn't enough hostility to make me believe that ponies were nasty there. Another thing in the song. If somepony's grouchy, pay no mind surprise instead with something kind lo and behold, you may just find A smile is what you bring. I can totally see Pinkie Pie singing this, i know a smile can be one of the reactions of a generous act, but it's weird seeing Rarity singing about making others smile. I would've liked that it would've been more visible that Manehattan wasn't the town she would've hoped for, and event after event of unkindess, with of course, Suri's betrayal being the cherry on top, piled up on her nerves making her have this breakdown with her friends. There's a phrase that Rarity and Coco mentined in the episode. Is everypony really on their own this town? I could hardly see within the episode why they've come to that conclusion, and it was there but very sublty. In conclusion? her generosity, too blunt. the events that lead her to the main conflict, too subtle. It should have been the opposite. Moved to Elsewhere 11,331 February 19, 2014 Share February 19, 2014 That's almost an oxymoron to think that the generosity song is Rarity becoming selfish. It's so hilarious XD.

I can sing all I want about how much I hate to eat meat, while I eat steak. I don't critizise her for the reasons most haters do, I do it, because I see something wrong in her, she's my favorite pony after all, and I pay more attention to her whether she's the focus of an episode or not. I rather not say that she wanted to find the 'opportunity' finding an opportunity to be generous, hear your words, doesn't that sound shallow to you? because it does to me. Forget about Rarity and her song and think about that. Going to a new town to find an opportunity to be generous, sounds like a hunting trip to me. And moreover, that is a very specious argument. She just displayed a ton of generosity and you're saying it doesn't count because she should do it more. I would agree she should express her element more, or at the very least stop undermining it for comedy, but that does not invalidate the fact that she does show it. FYI, Rarity's has proven to me that she's insanelly generous since season1, it's a shame that others didn't seem to see her the way I saw her, however I like way how her generous acts were something you could actually be related to, something with depth and realism, even for a cartoon show. Not something as singing while I give away all my gems. The ridiculous amount of fanservice lately it's making me think that writers had to do something with Rarity to make her element more visible because she was absolutely despised in the past. You know what? I rather have the 80% of the fandom thinking that she's a greedy bitch while still being a complicated 3-dimensional character than just being blunt about how much 'generous' she can be. applejock 359 February 19, 2014 Share February 19, 2014 Alright, that is IT! And IT, is, on!! No pony has the right to insult the great Queen Raritys songs, any of them! Ra-ra is a goddess of the mic and you will RESPECT HER! Ok, easy Jock, relax....:Twi chest breath: I get it, really, I do! I understand why Rarity gets the bad attention she does. She is kinda this shows anti-hero. But not really. Honestly it is hard to put her in a stereotypical role. I use anti hero because either you LOVE her, or you really WANT to love her, but just can't! (think Dinobot from Beastwars, great example of an antihero). And really, it is OK for other Bronys to poo all over anything Rarity does. Heck I do it with Fluttershy all the time (or as Mentally Abridged Pinky would say "You must not trust the Yellow one...yes"), but one thing I shall never do is insult any of the girls songs. Generosity was Raritys "smile smile smile" a song where she just lets herself out. What is so wrong about that? Is it the title? What if the song was called "Give give give" would you like it more?....OH COME ON!! -Sweete Belle But in the end, Ra-ra is best post, and nothing will ever change that the tri-diamond cutie mark makes one of the best tattoos, period! I should know...(I have 2 of them, soon to be 3..cough) Now on to more important musical matters! The upcoming (hopefully) Sweete Belle song, with a Luna backup! Woot! 1 ---> Here be Fabulous Mare! <--- There be Brony! ***Fear the Hater, for they are out to taint your Perfection. Buck the Troll, for he would seek to stop the Fabulous flavor. For you are Brony, coated in Pearl, maned in fine Mulberry, eyes of the sky, and flanks of Diamonds. Your life is for the Lady, all hail the Queen, for Rarity, your life, for her.*** -Applejock
