Would you like someone else apart from Celestia and Luna ruling Equestria?

What about a parliamentary constitutional hereditary democratic monarchy? Celestia and Luna can still stay as neutral political figures, who would help keep the parliament (or Ministry council, senate or however you wish to call it) free from corruption, and keep parties from taking absolute power.

This is how I want my country to work at least. Monarchy is something this world is missing, imo.

No. Princesses of the Day and the Night to rule Equestria forever. Or at least other princesses that "ascended" like Twilight and Cadance.

Because if you start putting other elements that surround any form of democracy, the whole thing goes bad.

One thing have to say about monarchies: it gets crap done and it's incredibly efficient. Considering that Celestia and Luna are benevolent monarchs with very long life spans, I don't really think there's any problem with the current system. I don't see any downsides with what's already there and a switch to a system like democracy might lead to corruption.

Speaking for myself though, I don't think anyone else is really necessary.

democracy

No matter how much he was wrong, he was right about this one :P

They're not benelovent though. They'll banish or kill anyone who disagrees with them. Take Sombra, the Crystal empire wasn't even part of Equestria, yet they invaded and deposed him!

We don't know the history there, though. The reactions of pretty much everyone involved, including his own citizens, seemed to point towards his rule really only being for the sake of himself. Fanon aside.

I've always personally believed that the most efficient system in the world is a benevolent dictatorship, which has essentially worked to great effect in Singapore, as a real life example. Without bureaucracy in the way, a capable and willing leader could accomplish more than most. I think Luna and Celestia especially fit in those roles.

Absolutely not! Celestia is a good example of monarchies working! Much like Plato, I loathe the idea of democracy. The only reason we should use it in the real world is because corrupt autocratic rule is worse than democracy. Luckily, we can have a benevolent ruler in fantasy!

Think of it this way: would you like the idea of Flim and Flam convincing some town to elect them to government?

That is true, especially if the monarch has actual legitimacy, like Luna and Celestia, or in the case of my country, the Karađorđević dynasty, who are the ancestors of the leader of our uprising, and the creator of modern Serbia.

In my opinion Celestia and Luna are little better than the Roman emperors. Keeping the populace in a state of blissful ignorance, while granting themselves absolute power. I think there should at least be a comic about a successful revolution.

I think you are letting the fandom influence your opinion of them.

And you are forgetting that Equestria is not Earth.

Well, it works in Equestria as it is now. Why change it? Period.

But - and before I go off topic - I'll just say that I for one would rather die than to give up on democracy in our world.

@,

Well your opinion is wrong. Celestia and Luna are legit, immortal gods, and Equestria is a Utopian world, with love, harmony, friendship. Remember how Luna and Celestia first came to power?

I do think that this is the best we can do.

I just don't think that democracy is the best option, hypothetically. Equestria just has a better solution than ours.

EDIT: Ultimately, I think, the problem is the people running things and not the system. If you could elect people that are "good at doing the job", and not "good at convincing that they are good at doing the job", I'd be okay.

Go ahead and write a fanfic about it, but the day that becomes canon is the day I sprout wings, gain the voice of Fat Albert, and begin to harbor an unholy obsession with sheds.

It's a trick, they use that excuse to maintain their hold on power.'oh look, don't disobey us, you'll be going against love and harmony. And for what we know, Discord could've been democracticly elected and that the majority of ponies may have been happy with his rule. We only have Celestia and Luna's word. Edited by Pinkie Perry

Actually, it was explicitly stated that the Empire is connected to Equestria somehow. Also, Sombra was being Pony!Hitler at the time; of course somepony needed to depose him!

Well your opinion is wrong.

I still don't know what side to join in the "An opinion itself cannot be wrong" debate.

immortal gods, and Equestria is a Utopian world

Well can't find it now, but Lauren Faust herself once wrote on DeviantArt - I think it was that one - that Celestia and Luna are no gods and I think the current staff would agree on that. And an utopia with all these flaws? Meh...

But in the end, I think the idea of Celestia and Luna being in any way malevolent or negatively manipulative is... probably a bit far-fetched.

Ever heard of Occam's Razor?  ^_^  It's not really a solution if you have to introduce new elements to the discussion so that you hypothesis works.

Let's deconstruct this conversation. You think that the problem is the diarchy. That there is no participation of the populace in the process of decision making and you think that the princesses might be corrupt. Right? What is it that you think that they are doing that harms ponies?

"An opinion itself cannot be wrong debate".

Well we are debating something canon, which are facts. Maybe I should have used different terminology?

I'm pretty sure if you were even violently forced to Equestria, that you would consider it a Utopian society, since you only knew of this uncivilized Earth before you got there ;)

Well, I'd probably start causing problems the day I arrived there and in the end, there wouldn't be any difference left.
