movies/tv Dragon Ball Z

I've made it known before in other threads that I am absolutely nuts about the Dragon Ball franchise in its entirety.  I'm also fresh off a marathon through Dragon Ball, Kai/Z and GT, all of the movies, specials, OVAs, and even the PSAs.  ...In fact, I actually just ran through Kai a second time just because I got a new TV and wanted to watch it again on the better TV.  Oh, and I own a handful of the Viz manga volumes digitally; hoping to have all of them by the end of the year.

I've also been keeping up with Kai's Buu Saga now that it's airing in Japan.  I'm very excited that's happening because of the original Z series, I only own Dragon Box 7, so I have a gap between Kai's original ending (Cell Games) and where that Dragon Box picks up (Gotenks's introduction).

I also took some time lately to redo some of my old drawings:

Hmm...just noticed Vegeta and Trunks are much too tall...dang.

A very welcome update over these atrocities (it has been 3 years though, so maybe I'm just too harsh on my old self):

Funny thing is, it was supposed to end with Goku dying on Namek, and Freiza's defeat. But when he was convinced to continue, Akira tried to end it at Cell, by a "passing of the torch" scenario.

To date, this is just a very persistent, and understandably believable, rumour.  It is possibly true*, though there has yet to be a published interview with Toriyama or any of the editors he had during the manga's run in which they've said anything to that effect.  It's in part persisted thanks to Chris Sabat (FUNimation's Vegeta, Piccolo, etc.) saying so after misunderstanding something Toriyama actually did say:  That he felt at his limits in the third year writing the manga (which, to Sabat, might have seemed like 'oh, third season of DBZ, that's the Frieza saga!' when in fact it would only have been around Uranai Baba's introduction).  Anyway more on that here: http://www.kanzenshuu.com/intended-end/

Kanzenshuu is crazy-dedicated to what they do, if you like Dragon Ball at all, I think you owe it to yourself to have it bookmarked.

*Even Kanzenshuu's article says the simple statement of "He wanted to end it with Freeza" is "probably true".  Personally, I'm slightly more skeptical since he would have been working on contract and it was just a week-by-week job for him; wouldn't surprise me at all if the idea of making the story end never even occurred to him at the time.

Um...so yes, yes I do remember Dragon Ball Z.   :P

Well, the Frieza part might be rumor, but I know the part about him wanting to end with Cell isn't. He really wasn't big on DBZ after some time, because it was too serious, and he is a bigger fan of being comical. Supposedly, he didn't like how DB went on the tail end, but I dunno if that's true.

I'm curious if you have a source on this because it's another thing that does not seem to have appeared in any published interviews (also covered on the Kanzenshuu guide I linked: "Part of the whole package of rumors about Toriyama’s thwarted plans of ending the series with the Freeza arc is that, once that plan fell through, he then tried to end it after the Cell Games only to fail once more. All the same things that can be said about the supposed Freeza ending can be said here too: Toriyama has never said such a thing in interviews.".

It is, however, true that the Android arc had a lot of (former) editor meddling leading to the frequent change in villains.

The Dragon Ball fandom online, especially around YouTube comments *dusts chip off shoulder*, is permeated with misinformation.

Don't worry, it wasn't youtube. This I got, way before youtube was even a fad. I can't give sources, since all three sites I got it from, are now dead...well, two are dead, one died then was brought back as a fanfiction site, but I think its dead now.

  • 4 months later...

Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, and Dragon Ball GT are still my favourite show of ALL TIME, alongside The Simpsons and David the gnome. Most epic one I've ever seen.

Goku was no hero, he was a warrior.

NO.

He was THE Warrior. The Undefeatable Warrior.
