IDW's MLP comics

Do any of you guys read them?

I have all of them up to this date and love them all, their stories are different from the show, sometimes feeling a bit more mature (as mature as you can get with magical talking ponies) but still the great feeling the show gives you.

what do you guys think?

I haven't really read them at all. Just never got around to it. I want to order some of the paperback versions though. I prefer picking those up over single comics anyway.

Twilight is best pony.

Why hello MLPForums! What have ya been up to?

The last two main issues killed my favourite pony for me...

"There is no such thing as innocence, only degrees of guilt."

"Prayer cleanses the soul, Pain cleanses the body."

"He who follows Chaos, shall suffer for eternity."

I think they are great. I don't have the latest issue (maybe 2 by now) since I wait for the price to drop usually, but I've enjoyed them so far. Even picked up the side ones that focus on each specific character.

I thoroughly enjoyed the one that follows Big Mac as he tries to get some nails. The Family Circus reference was great, and the loopy Fleetfoot that took everything Mac did as signs of affection was pretty funny.

I'm still pretty mixed on the comics. On one had, when they're good, they're good, however, when they're bad they're bad.

One thing I can't help but feel bugged about is that sometimes I feel they really overdo it with the popculture and brony references. Hell the overuse of Popculture and brony references pretty much ruined the RD micro

Except I like RD sooo....It just makes me hate it even more :/

There were a couple I thought were pretty weak, the Cadance and Shining Armor one in particular I thought was pretty boring. Then again I never cared much for either of them so maybe I'm just being unfair

My Target has  a couple of them. Though no idea what issue it was. My guess an older issue, seeming our Target never stocks the "newest" stuff. They also had the price of the comic marked up from the cover price. they wanted $8 for them, while the cover price was $6 I think. So until I find them cheaper than $8, I'll pass on buying them.

I just think they're really boring. Everytime I see them show up they just aren't interesting to see, whether it's on the show or in the comic

I thought the RD one was alright, she's near the bottom of my list of favorites for the main six so I didn't notice the overwhelming references ruining anything, I just kind of read that book and moved on. Same thing I'll do with the Pinkie one.

The Shining and Cadance ones though I thought were fun, gave them much more personality then the show has or probably ever will.

They're pretty good, though I do think they rely too much on pop and brony culture references in their comics. Next arc however could make or break their standing opinion with the brony fandom as a lot of people are worried how they're going to tie Celestia and others in that comic.

I'm one of those who's hoping that Sombra and Celestia get it together in this comic arc!

Personally, I'm hoping it doesn't reveal that all of the problems caused 1000 years ago were done because Celestia decided her love for Sombra was more important than ensuring her sister was all right amongst other things.

I own and have read all of the comics (yes, all of them...well, okay, I haven't read the Annual. But aside from that, all). I greatly enjoy them for the most part, and they're especially nice during the off-season, so all in all a reasonable enough use of four bucks per.

  • 3 months later...

I just started reading the comics, so my opinion could change. I just got into the series earlier this year, but as I approached season 3, I figured I wouldn't want it to end after season 4, so I ordered the graphic novels. I waited till after watching the show to read them for a few reasons. One was that I wasn't going to receive them till well after starting season 3, so I couldn't read them in canon order anyways. The other is that my friend and I both watched the show, and liked to talk about the episodes as we saw them, so I couldn't take a break to read the comics. Also, I was captivated enough by the show that I would have kept going with that anyways. Well, I finally started reading the comics the other night, and I'm enjoying them so far. I've only read two issues, but the first story arc is off to a good start IMHO.

Keep on reading my friend. There is plenty of good content to come. :D

Also, our good friend Tommy Oliver/Bronycurious also seems to be a good fan of the comics...well, the first arc thus far anyway.

I'm inclined to agree with that guy about the changelings in the first issue. There is some inconsistency there, and no, they weren't possessed, because the real ponies were captured, and replaced by changeling dopplegangers. I wasn't particularly focused on the changelings, mind you. I was paying more attention to the Mane Six, who all had their moments, and there were some decent exchanges between Rarity and Rainbowdash, which is, dare I say, a rarity in the show. On the other hand, it might have taken longer to set up the action if the Mane Six had to deduce that the other ponies weren't themselves by observing them acting on edge over at least a short period of time. It's also quite possible that, given the revenge plot, Queen Crysallis wanted to make it obvious that the others weren't themselves, to lead the Mane Six right to her, which was the reason why she revealed where the CMCs were being held.

I think issue 2 is an improvement, mind you. Maybe I'm not super observant, because I didnt think of the troll as a shot at Bronies. I was more fixated on the Of Mice and Men references, and the possible Lord of the Rings, Finding Nemo and Harry Potter references, but it's true that the troll could represent a certain type of Brony. I'll have to see about paying more attention to that stuff.
