Should Alicorns have a requirement to be all-powerful?

Or is it more interesting to make them not as powerful as Princess Celestia and Princess Luna?

This is coming from someone who's observed the season for a long time.  Before "A Canterlot Wedding," all we had were Princess Celestia and Princess Luna, two Alicorn sisters who possess power beyond any pony.  Then we were given Princess Cadance(Who, during the 3rd season, shows more physical weakness than her superiors) and later on, Twilight Sparkle becomes the 4th Alicorn.

But I wonder.  Why should Alicorns be powerful?  Is it mandatory for an Alicorn to have god-like powers?  Or is it more interesting for the Alicorn to be on similar scales as an Earth Pony, Unicorn and/or Pegasus?  Personally, I would like to see the latter explored often, especially if said Alicorn was weak and timid.  Why?  In my view, flaws make the character.

I think alicorns should at least be powerful enough to justify being alicorns. Honestly, i think the way the show has handled it has been perfect. Alicorns can become as powerful as cele and luna, but when they first become alicorns like twilight they aren't instantly extremely powerful. They still have room to grow :3

Well the reason why I asked is because I want to at least see(or write about) an alicorn that feels vulnerable and weak.  Something that it has to overcome if it wants to survive in the world.

I think that Alicorns should be more powerful than other Ponies, provided they have earned their status, but not be nowhere near as powerful as Celestia or Luna, but become more powerful over time.

Remember, Celesta and Luna have been Alicorns for over a thousand years, so they have more than enough reason to be as powerful as they are...

Well alicorns can certainly have great challenges that make them feel weak! I mean, just think about the very first episodes of the show, and how weak and vulnerable princess luna was after her defeat.

An Alicorn may actually be a an evolution since the Baby Cakes episode hints that all ponies carry the genes of all three tribes. Then magic has a way of making it possible of changing any pony to an Alicorn.

No. Cadance can barely do anything, and yet she is an alicorn. An alicorn is more of a state of being, meaning that one has ascended to mastery of their talent, or the skill their cutie mark represents (dis-regarding the royal sisters). So they would not be all powerful, but would gain an overall buff to skills, and become masters of their skill or profession.

Or that Mrs. Cake was cheating on poor Mr. Cake...

With the entire town. Because Mr. Cake just can't cut it.

Cadence is pretty powerful. Her cutie mark bore the symbol of the Crystal Heart from the Crystal Empire that had been banished and never known to return or not... Her destiny was pre-determined to rule a kingdom that they thought to have been lost...

That's some pretty crazy stuff..

Actually, Princess Celestia and Princess Luna are natural-born Alicorns.

How is Cadence powerless? She generates and spreads love which is actually very powerful. Fixing bonds with love determines alternate timelines rather than ponies hating and going down different roads.. It interferes with destiny.

Didn't fix sombra. She had to get a deus ex machina for that. Didn't fix the hive queen, she had to combine her powers with shiny to do that. And if her fate is to fix bonds then those bonds will always be fixed so she is not altering reality at all as she is always going to fix those bonds.

I feel that Cadence is an alicorn of destiny. It's just so.... weird how her cutie mark was the crystal heart....

That's where her significance mostly comes from... in my opinion @.@

If she is the pony of destiny then she does not alter it by fixing love bonds, as she is a fixed point in time that will always fix those specific love bonds.

She was found by earth ponies as a normal pegasus. She did not become an alicorn until reversing a love spell.

Hmm.... @.@ why are we trying to determine the significance of certain alicorn's based on their power level? shouldn't be from the struggles?

Well this thread is about the necessity(or lack there of) for alicorns to be all powerful.

oh yea! sorry i'm super tired and out of it. i mean i can see that alicorns SHOULD have some sort of influence resulting power that could cause peace or catastrophe... but what about twilight... hers is friendship. most of the time she can't do much unless the mane 6 is involved... i know when she was a young pony she went into god form after rainbow dash's sonic rainboom... and i still dont know where that came from..

They should have a mastery, or atleast very high level understanding of their "element". But having them be all powerful is to great a risk to the land. As Luna has shown, alicorns are not immune to corruption, and having them be masters of all, rather than masters of one element leaves you to vulnerable should another civil war occur.

i guess i really dont have much of a logical opinion on this topic. considering in my fanfic, my OC is an alicorn with a crazy powerful gift but she hates it.
