In family Appreciation Day, Granny Smith said that Ponyville grew out of Sweet Apple Acres, and in multiple episodes the farm is depicted as being a whiles away from the actual main town. so is it even within Ponyville city limits?

I think it is technically within city limits, but well outside of the city proper. The orchards could also add distance, so while their edge may be in Ponyville territory, the farmstead is not.

I agree I think that they set up the orchards and the town set themselves up on the edge of it. So the edge might reach into the city itself, but the barn, house, etc are not quite within them. I do believe they are a part of the city though because in another episode with the brothers Flim and Flam (I think that's their names) the mayor of Ponyville declared that the winner would be the supplier for all of Ponyville. This seems a little vague (sorry), but I'm trying to keep spoilers to a minimum. To me that said that they were part of Ponyville.

I know I live in a small town (IRL) and there homes and such between the next town and ours, but since we are bigger they are considered part of the town I live in. Some of them are even farms so it's pretty similar. Even though they don't live within in the town themselves they are still considered to live in the same town.

Well sweet apple acres isn't in the centre of ponyville but it's ponyville property. It doesn't matter if it's inside ponyville or not because it is part of ponyville.

You can lead a horse to water but you can't make it save equistria with its five candy coloured friends and shoot rainbows at bad guys using their necklaces and tiara unless you're celestia

I think the town would have started next to Sweet Apple Acres and grown outward. There is a body if water and food source, so most hamlets start near it and gradually expand. That would make SAA ground zero for the town, but if the town expanded naturally outward it would remain at the edge of the city.

It technically would be considered part of Ponyville but much like a suburb or extension of the town. Since it is not given a separate entry on the official map it is considered part of it.

You can see on the map some of the trees and the name Ponyville covers part of it so I guess they make the city center what would be the center of the city's territory. It makes sense and it keeps SAA with Ponyville.

It's more than likely on Ponyville Property. It can't be that far from downtown ponyville, since all of the ponyville ponies visit the farm for apple cider every year.
