Why was the princesses' magic Tirek's main goal?

Why was alicorn magic Tirek's main goal and not Discord's magic? Yes, alicorn magic is extremely powerful, but as far as we know, it can't actually warp the very fabric of reality like Discord's magic can.

Firstly, he was surprised to see that Discord was free and not trapped in stone. His plan to take the ponies' and then the Princesses' magic was set before he knew Discord was free. Secondly, it's possible that the combined magic of 3 alicorns is greater than Discord's magic, even if he is individually more powerful than any of them. Thirdly, once he had talked Discord over onto his side, he knew he could take Discord's magic any time after he drained the magic of all the ponies races, even before getting the Princesses' power.

But he preferred to have Discord as an ally than as an enemy.

So he lied to Discord when saying he wanted the alicorns magic first.

Actually, Discord's magic was also one of his main goals.

He probably just wanted as much power as he could get. The more magic that was not available to his enemies, the easier his rule would be. As we saw, taking the Princess' magic was a huge step up in his overall power and size.

His main goal was to rid Equestria of all of its power so that the ponies relied on him to survive. If he could develop a temporary acquaintance while he was weak, discord was his best bet at speeding along his transformation. Once he was strong enough, he cut the loose strings.

Did you see the massive boost he got from the alicorn magic? Discord's power was good but the alicorns had more magic than all of the ponies he had absorbed thus far and Discord on top of it all. That's some serious power.

Alicorn magic, from what we've seen -excluding the EoH- is the most powerful magic in the MLP universe. Sure, Discord can make it rain chocolate, but who ever said Alicorns can't do the same? Alicorns (or at least Princess Celestia) can turn ponies into Alicorns. (While you could argue that Discord turned Twilight into an Earth Pony and a Pegasus -The Return of Harmony Part 1, & Three's a Crowd-)

 

All I'm saying is, Alicorns have some pretty extreme magic, and we still don't know what the limits of that magic truly is.

 

But whatever it is, it's very powerful. With all the magic from ponies Tirek already took (remember how big he was?), he would do some damage with all the Alicorn magic in Equestria. (And he did, for the few minutes he had them)

Taking the last bastion of magic (The alicorn magic) became a sub-goal in the grand scheme of things aka Tirek's original goal - absolute domination of all of Equestria.  The centaur was a power-mad conqueror - as others have said - he was the brute force type of villain, going on the warring path of conquest. 

 

When Tirek broke out of Tartarus, the thing that was on his mind was pure conquest.  In order to achieve this conquest, Tirek had to disarm all opponents to his authority, leaving them defenseless, submissive and powerless so that there would be no resistance that could oppose his rule of complete global domination (of Equestria that is).  

 

Hence Tirek could not have any form of real resistance oppose his rule, hence it was imperative for Tirek to sniff out where Twilight Sparkle was hiding (after he had learned of her existence).  If he left Twilight alone, they could have possibly formed a resistance against his rule and posed a real threat to him.  When you go for complete domination - you go about ending all forms of resistance against you.

The other possibility is that only Discord can use his magic and the infusion of Discord's magic was simply a power up and not an increase in ability.
