general media Entertainment: what good is it?

Is entertainment, like TV and movies and video games and such, really any good? What is it actually worth?

 

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy a good TV show (obviously, what with Ponies), and video games are fun to lose myself in, but what good does it actually do? It often seems that, more than anything else, entertainment just serves as a distraction from life, from reality. But life is the only life we have, and reality is the only reality we've got. Entertainment is just....... false. At least fiction is. Clearly, it can be used for other purposes, such as teaching history or skills or values. But is it really valuable if it's done for its own sake?

 

Don't want to get into some big debate about it, just wondering what y'all's thoughts are.

I find entertainment a way to enlighten the watcher, and make them feel happy and very curious. Take Comedy Central, it's main purpose is to entertain it's viewers, to make them laugh and enraptured by it's shows. 

Entertainment can be counted as false, but of course 99% of our entertainment is false, like reality TV shows, fantasy, comedy, drama, it's all just there to entertain the mind and to make them wonder. It makes it more tolerable...I rather not sit through a show without SOMETHING unusual or funny going on.

To a person like me, where life is merely a transition from one video game to the next, entertainment is the meat of my existence. It opens up realms of possibilities in the universe and expands my experiences.

 

On top of all that I don't much care for other people, society or anything else. My entertainment is the reason for my existence and I am fully aware that society doesn't like that I don't contribute to it in any big way. Too bad, society. I like my ways and fuck you if you don't.

Well, what would we do if we were unable to find ways to entertain ourselves? I mean, sure, the world would keep turning and morals would be much less corrupted, but how dull would life be? 

Entertainment is something that's false, but reality is something that's real - and I don't know about you, but I think reality bites. While I wish I could just drown my sorrows out in la-la land filled with Rarity and the other 5, that's something I only do in my free-time. Life comes before entertainment, but entertainment is pretty vital to happiness, in a way. If you were not entertained, what would you be? Bored. Boredom leads to depression, in most cases. Life would suck without entertainment, as false as it is - and I'd rather be entertained with fiction than live a life of all work and no play
