I personally think that this was the whole point of the episode. The MLP staff has always had a much closer bond with their viewers than any other show that I'm aware of. I think that episode 100 was just their way of expressing their gratitude towards the fanbase.

People are going to see only what they want to see and interpret anything said on the matter in whatever way supports their beliefs. For my two bits worth, I can't see Hasbro injecting anything so controversial as a lesbian relationship into their programming after that whole Derpy fiasco.

Indeed. No singular fandom is going to conform to any sort of mold. We all express ourselves in different ways. Personally, I prefer to stick to the works that most closely follow the spirit of the show and don't really see the appeal of clop art of glue fics. But if that sort of thing floats your boat, who am I (or anyone else) to give you grief over it? Just do your own thing and let everyone else do theirs.

It is canon. But when has anything as trivial as official canon ever stopped a fandom from doing whatever it pleases? As far as I can tell the writers didn't really damage much in the way of fan-canon so much as they made a lot of the more popular aspects of it official. And yet, some fans will continue to ship their favorite pairs regardless of what the writers/directors say. Others will refuse to call certain ponies by their official names despite what appears in the credits. So yeah, it's all canon now. Whether or not you choose to accept it is up to you.
