Yeah sorry XD, was just using the term hackers to refer to them. But they might have used cracking to setup a botnet for the ddos if they didn't have people to "volunteer" using their pc for it
Those who set up the botnets are usually in the business of selling access to them. Learning how to infect thousands of computers and doing so without incriminating your identity is an incredible amount of effort to go through just to cause a few hours of downtime and slowdown for a pony site.
