Gerrymandering, as I mentioned, is at the heart of the problem: Congressional reps are often either fighting for their political lives and thus need to take hardline partisan positions to maintain support, or they coast through every election and can spout off all sorts of inane talking points. I trust many of them are decent people -- but there is virtually no room to voice independent thought without being primaried. God help you if you're thoughtful, too.
