Wanted to rewatch Growing Up is Hard to Do. Right now, yeah, the fact that everyone is so busy to go today is really convenient. And it’s really contrived how Star Swirl, one of Equestria’s most knowledgeable and smartest magicians, knows nothing of this flower.
Also, I understand them being told not to go on the train alone to Appleoosa, being “too far” and all. But a couple of things to counter:
- Unless they told their sisters, they’ve been on the train alone twice: the Crystal Empire and to Scoot’s aunts’ house.
- The CMCs have been to Appleoosa at least once, and that time they helped Troubleshoes escape from the townsponies and sheriff framing him.
Also, it was really stupid of both FS and Twi to leave a magical flower they know nothing about alone and unprotected. Because of their lack of knowledge of the flower’s properties, the CMCs or someone else could’ve done something to trigger it without them realizing it. What if the wishing flower had the ability to hurt somepony? This whole moral is about not rushing your time as a kid and learning that growing up means maturing and being responsible, but FS and Twi weren’t responsible at all and, in fact, should’ve shared a bit of the blame for causing the CMCs to accidentally grow in size. In short, this scene completely undermines the lesson it tries to teach.

Sadly this gross negligence isn't unprecedented. Celestia and Luna along with all of Canterlot left a time travel spell just laying around, even when they knew they had a history of rogue unicorn mages.
It took them long enough to have Shining Armor become a competent security detail and expert and actually buffer Canterlot's defenses, which still are quite weak.
