Iowa and New Hampshire are vastly overrated as primary states. As swing states? Sure, but there impact in primaries is so overstated, especially when their populations and demographics are far less representative of the general primary electorates, especially on the Democratic side.

@Cwanky Julián Castro pointed that out quite well recently, and I agree completely. Personally, I'd start in either the U.S. territories or the AZ/NM/NV/CO area.

@Dark Qiviut I know it's a slightly different topic, but the US territory of Puerto Rico is grossly disenfranchised. While an argument can be made about the merits of giving representation to smaller US territories, the same cannot be said of Puerto Rico. In size and GDP alone, it outsizes many states, including the Dakotas, Alaska, Vermont, Rhode Island and Montana.
