I've always found Gottlieb Daimler's mantra "Das Beste oder nichts" ("The best or nothing") both inspiring and potentially destructive. What is it to you?

What I've found "destructive" about it is that it may encourage people in a creative or otherwise less competitively-focused field, where winners and losers are less clearly defined, to force themselves to measure up to someone else's standards. Inspiring that it gets them to try their best, but destructive in suggesting that it's compulsory to *be* the best. In short, struggling to accept that there's "always someone better".

That's an interesting way of looking at it. I just interpret it individualistically; "best" is a word that is objectively defined to each person's ability to do what they can do until they reach their own limits. I believe there is a difference between "best" and "perfect." The latter is an ideal that is humanly impossible to achieve while the former is our personal estimate of how close to perfect we can become.
