  1. "It Isn't the Mane Thing About You" - Give this better jokes and you have a season 1 episode. Which, to be clear, is a compliment, as the show hasn't felt like this in years. It could also perhaps use a better main conflict, but even as is, I can imagine this actually pretty great if it only had better comedic timing; it avoids the cringe comedy one would expect from this premise. Rarity's also a little off, to be honest, but everything from the climax forward is absolutely aces. I'd be kinder to a lot of episodes if they ended as well as this one did.

This ep remind me of the old days: FUN. :pout: Nothing too complex, nothing too meta, nothing too political :fiery: Josh knows how to write a fun episode.

@Lambdadelta Didn't realize this was Haber. Kinda glad for that, because that would have raised my expectations unreasonably high. This is actually one of my least favourite episodes he's done so far, but it once again confirms that he is easily one of the best writers on the show right now. So glad to have him back!

  2. New MLP movie trailer, new sigh from me. Not really sure what you lot are seeing in this.

Aw, come on. This is mane 6 adventure that people keep rambling about, an exciting, fun, cute adventure, isnt that you want, FUN?! You finally can take a break from 'Starlight show' to have a true adventure that mane 6 come together since S5 premiere, now you just being cynical about the movie isnt even aired yet. The trailer is fine, that cat still weird to me but its fine, nothing suggest it will be bad story or anything...

@Lambdadelta I'm just not feeling these trailers so far. Maybe the movie will surprise me with some decent jokes, but to me adventure stories aren't inherently fun, and so far nothing has set my expectations very high. I worry it'll be a bunch of unsubstantial, derivative noise, because that's what Lionsgate is trying to sell me.

Also: I might not like Starlight, but mane six-centric stories haven't been that much better in recent years. I've never been one of the people begging for a mane six adventure; I like a few adventure episodes, but I tend to prefer the show's slice-of-life stuff.

@AlexanderThrond As long as the characters stay true to themself and be entertaining, adventure or not, it's still enjoyable rides. Some celebrities are distracting but its a movie to attract worldwide audiences, to expand the franchise (profit) so it's not that bad, IT WOULD BE REALLY BAD IF THE MOVIE FAILED, and i dont want mlp suffers from financial failure.

Anyway, if you love the show, go watch the movie and enjoy it (if it not suck, but you have to believe). I dont know whether this movie can come to my country or not... :adorkable:

  3. "Daring Don't" - I think this actually has some of the better worldbuilding in the show, but it also mistakes constant loud expository chatter for jokes, Daring Do comes across as bland and tediously morose, and the plot is severely undercooked. The dialogue is constantly repeating the episode's themes, but then it cops out of actually dealing with the ideas it set up. This story is about nothing. And why call a character "Somnambula" if she never actually sleepwalks?

Easily the worst Daring Do episode so far.

    1. Dark Qiviut

      Dark Qiviut

I think you mean "Daring Done."

And for Somnambula, I think it's a two-part reference, one for being able to rescue Prince Hisan while blindfolded, the other a reference to G1 MLP's witch of the same name (though she's a protagonist here, not antagonist like in G1).

    2. Thrond

      Thrond

@Dark Qiviut I do indeed mean "Daring Done." I love "Daring Don't."

And a blindfold is not the same as somnambulism! If that's what they were going for, then that makes me even angrier.

  4. To me, the problem with calling any My Little Pony shipping "basically canon" - i.e., close enough to hypothesize that those characters would be in a relationship if the suits permitted it - is that almost all friendships in the show are highly affectionate in ways which inevitably contradict each other. I'd say a few episodes lean more heavily into that than others - "Fall Weather Friends," "Hurricane Fluttershy," "Rarity Investigates!" and "Discordant Harmony" being great examples - but simply because friends in this show tend to regard each other so fondly, it's easy to find ammunition for anything. Which is part of why the LyraBon part of "Slice of Life" wasn't enough, even beyond it being a compromise at best: with romance in this show, there's plausible deniability unless you say it out loud. Do Lyra and Bon Bon really act that differently from other character pairings in this show? I don't think so. And the same is true of any other ship in the show, aside from the hetero pairings which are explicitly stated to have a romantic attraction. We wouldn't have shipping without people using moments in the show to justify themselves, but I think it's silly to suggest your ship of choice is "canon."

    1. Thrond

      Thrond

Admittedly I'm also just a bit salty that every ship I like has heavily declined in time spent together in the show, and I'm guilty of calling my ships "canon" sometimes too, but my point still stands.

  5. I really don't understand how people can criticize the first Equestria Girls for being cliched and generic and then go on to praise the "Dance Magic" special.

To be honest, everything which has happened since makes me think I was too hard on "Friendship Games."

    1. Lambdadelta

      Lambdadelta

People sure love bashing EQG 1, its not that bad, beside some cringeworthy FlashLight moments, dumb photoshop things and mediocre Villain Sunset, this movie is perfectly OK.

"Dance Magic" is so cliche that i can see it from a mile away. Like EQG 1, it's perfectly serviceable.

EQG started to deteriorate really fast after Friendship Games.

    2. Thrond

      Thrond

@Lambdadelta It has too much cringe comedy and doesn't make a lot of sense, but I think the first Equestria Girls has way more charm and humour than people give it credit for.

  6. I still think the season 6 finale was both Trixie and Starlight's best showing.

  7. I'm still confuse as to why "feels like an earlier season" is used as a complaint. Earlier seasons were a lot more entertaining than the episodes usually accused of being like them.

  8. "To Change a Changeling" - This is really boring storywise - the ponies seem to only be here to mess everything up, and I don't know how the changelings even got the idea they didn't need to defend themselves. Wasn't Thorax inspired by seeing ponies fighting Chrysalis? That's self-defense if I've ever seen it. Plus, I don't really understand what Starlight and Trixie are supposed to have learned from this, and I don't find either particularly relatable here. Good thing Trixie and Pharynx are frequently hilarious, though, and Thorax is still adorable every time he appears.

  9. I've seen enough people denying the Apple parents are dead that I have a hard time feeling "The Perfect Pear" depicted the issue as well as it could have.

And if kids can't handle that... I dunno, I just don't like the show reminding me of its restrictions.

  10. "Campfire Tales" - Has almost nothing to do with why I watch the show, and I didn't find these stories very interesting on their own merits, but it is nice to see some different scenery, and the action scenes mostly keep the episode afloat. Plus, the framing story is mostly a wash. Has its moments, but not super exciting, which is rather disappointing.

  11. Still waiting for a second Rarity/Rainbow Dash team up tbh.

  12. Spike episodes, ranked:

    1. The Times They Are a Changeling
    2. Dragon Quest
    3. Inspiration Manifestation
    4. Secret of My Excess
    5. Equestria Games
    6. Just for Sidekicks
    7. Gauntlet of Fire
    8. Owl's Well That Ends Well
    9. Triple Threat
    10. Spike At Your Service
    11. Princess Spike
  13. "Triple Threat" - Rather predictable, so I found the tension a little dull, but there's a lot of cute and funny moments in here, and all the characterization is spot-on. Thorax is the best, Ember is pretty funny, and watching Spike stressing out about a task which he's still very new to is sympathetic and enjoyable, although I'm a weirdo who finds it inherently fun to watch these characters panicking about governance. Plus, Twilight yet again is allowed to be quirky, which is a plus. Wish I liked Starlight, though.

  14. So does anyone else really wanna learn more about Princess Cadance's backstory, or is that just me?

      Once In A Blue Moon

@LambdadeltaI agree, I miss the really good 2D Disney animations such as The Lion King (yes I loved Toy Story as well, but I don't find the aesthetic as appealing.) It's part of what drew me to MLP in the first place (that and excellent fan art.)

@AlexanderThrond They're different certainly. Maybe a bit 'softer' around the edges? (I don't really do 'arty talk.')
How long is it going to be? I assumed ~90 minutes, although I haven't been actively paying attention so I don't know. I don't think the length matters that much as long as they can move beyond the 20 minute mark; if EqG shows that they can tell a story that matches the time available then there is hope. And I think, or maybe I hope, that they have enough skill to suitably subvert directives from on-high and make a film that does justice to FiM.

@Once In A Blue Moon I'm gonna hold off on criticizing too much until I actually see the damn thing, but there's something off about it which I just don't like.

IMDb lists it at just under 100 minutes, which is almost double the length of the Equestria Girls films. To be fair, though, I rarely felt those movies needed to be shorter.

Not gonna lie, there is stuff which makes me wonder about the degree of executive meddling, including that comedic villain sidekick and the introduction of bipedal characters.

    4. Lambdadelta

      Lambdadelta

That Stitch-like character could be the downfall of that movie :nom: He could be a really annoying character like any villain sidekick.

  16. There's an almost sitcom-ish feel to some season 1-4 episodes that I really miss, where the main characters hung out in simple situations and humour was derived from their character interactions. I wish the show had more of that in recent years.

    1. Hierok

      Hierok

Yeah I miss the humour too, but since the show has matured a bit, many humour is lost and will probably not return. ;)

    2. Lambdadelta

      Lambdadelta

That is similar to me when i was watching S6 :nom: I really missed S2 during S6. Right now, i finally get over it, nothing stay unchange forever, i dont have any ability to change the way it is so i learn to adapt.

Old writers, they all gone now, dont expect the show can return to what it was or your enjoyment of the show will ruined by everytime you wish it could return to what it was.

I just want more PONIES, enjoy Good episodes and screw bad episodes :nom:

  17. Current ranking for the seventh season of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic:

    1. "A Flurry of Emotions" - 93/100
    2. "The Perfect Pear" - 83/100
    3. "A Royal Problem" - 83/100
    4. "Parental Glideance" - 80/100
    5. "Discordant Harmony" - 80/100
    6. "Not Asking for Trouble" - 63/100
    7. "Rock Solid Friendship" - 60/100
    8. "Celestial Advice" - 50/100
    9. "Forever Filly" - 48/100
    10. "Fame and Misfortune" - 45/100
    11. "Honest Apple" - 40/100
    12. "All Bottled Up" - 38/100
    13. "Fluttershy Leans In" - 35/100
    14. "Hard to Say Anything" - 25/100
  18. I've been very confused lately as to why I'm so much less fond of season 7 than seemingly everyone else. There must just be something about this season's humour which others dig a lot more than I do.

    1. Macavity Wilko

      Macavity Wilko

I'm not sure it's due to the humor... but for the lack of it

This season has less humor as other seasons, and it is focusing on themes that are normally for older viewers, just like letting go people you love; watching your sister grow; forgiving your parents for past mistakes; loving your family; sister and familiar problems; and now fandom themes focusing on the wrong análisis of characters

  19. Did not enjoy "Fame & Misfortune." The last thing we needed was another episode where the conflict is driven by characters being unsympathetic and annoying. Also, am I wrong, or was this actively insulting the fanbase?

It's a pity, but that is reality. So hating the this episode is actually hating the writers point of view.

      Thrond

@Macavity Wilko @Hierok You know, I actually understand that notion very well, but I just don't care much for how it was pulled off here, and the lack of respectful adults, the emphasis on specific criticisms, and the lack of subtlety made it feel kinda unfair to me in places. Mostly I just found it unfun though.

    4. Hierok

An opinion is just an opinion.

  20. I really hope that MLP continues its recent hot streak, because I'd love nothing more than to completely change my mind about season 7. I don't want to hate it, and I'm glad that I've liked it for four straight episodes now.

Who doesn't. The last 2 episodes were pure gold. :pinkie:

    3. Thrond

      Thrond

@Hierok I've enjoyed every episode since "A Royal Problem," which is good, because before that I enjoyed only two of 9 episodes.

@Lambdadelta This one could go either way. It's an unusual premise, so I'm curious. I just hope there's more going on than just bickering or cringe comedy.

  21. For what it's worth, my own top 5 MLP episodes would be something like "The Best Night Ever," "Lesson Zero," "Hurricane Fluttershy," "Rarity Investigates!," and "A Hearth's Warming Tail."

  22. People are now calling "The Perfect Pear" the BEST MLP EPISODE EVAH, so I sure hope my contrarian side doesn't ruin that lovely episode for me. Personally, I would have been even more willing to embrace it if it had said the word "dead" even once.

    1. Lambdadelta

      Lambdadelta

That not even the episode's faults :lie: With that TV-7 restriction (or Hasbro), it already did a great job.

    2. Thrond

      Thrond

@Lambdadelta Certainly, but I don't like being reminded of this show's restrictions, and I feel a lot of the main emotional beats don't have any context because of that. Plus, I'm a little annoyed that some folks on this board have denied that the Apple parents are dead, which I do think is the episode's fault. I also complained that the flashback story is a bit insubstantial, but I've changed my mind on that a little.

  23. These Equestria Girls summer shorts still have weird lip flaps, but I've actually liked the last three quite a bit. Seeing where Sunset lives, watching her get a pet, and then getting a little development for Celestia were all great fun, and that last one actually had a little substance to go with its laughs, which is more than I can say for the "Magic" specials.

  24. Don't really see many more opportunities for MLP's big adventure episodes to have personal conflicts or major character development, so I hope that the season 7 finale has something particularly weird up its sleeve and doesn't just try to top the dark edges and epic action of the past few finales.

  25. I don't understand what Hasbro is doing with Equestria Girls anymore. I miss Friendship Games.
