I'm always surprised that people take Daybreaker and Nightmare Moon in "A Royal Problem" at face value when they're obviously figments of Starlight's imagination.
Similarly, people often argue that Celestia and Luna could have transformed, but without knowing how, it seems awfully out of character for them to just spontaneously turn evil out of a mere spat. Surely they would have learned not to do that.

I guess I can see how season 1 has gotten a weirdly negative reputation here if half of this forum's users want the show to be serious and action-packed. Because as we all know, a kids' show about pastel-coloured ponies and friendship should be like Dragon Ball Z.

Right now, I dont think every finale should be Cutie Remark but i am glad that i watched a finale like Cutie Remark to see how far the show can take, at that time, it was my best finale.
If not for Discord and the battle scene, Twilight Kingdom is really tasteless, whenever i rewatch that episode, i always skip to Discord parts and the battle scene.
The best finale of all time is Canterlot Wedding, you got everything you want from that finale.
-
@Lambdadelta I always find the first half of "A Canterlot Wedding" just kinda annoying, and the reason seems to change each time. On my latest watch, I just didn't like Twilight in it very much.
"Twilight's Kingdom" is all about how much Twilight's friends mean to her, and how lost she feels without them. I like it a lot as sort of a reaffirmation of everything the show stands for, and it's one of like three times in the past four seasons where I really sympathised with Twilight, but most of it isn't all that much fun now that the novelty's worn off, and I don't really care about Twilight's role as an alicorn.
"The Cutie Re-Mark" never had a lot of novelty, and I'm honestly not super impressed by its dark imagery. Still, it has its moments.

It's really kinda ludicrous that people still believe that the mane six have reached a point where they can't develop anymore. One, people don't stop growing, and two, if there are no new stories to be told with the characters who define the show, then that doesn't mean the cast should change, that means it should end. And I don't think we're at that point!
-
@Lambdadelta I should hope not. When so many people still make fanfiction based on those characters, it's offensive to me that the people in charge of the show might not be interested in them.
-
So that new MLP movie trailer is somehow less promising than I even expected.
-
Until we get a proper explanation of how the Cutie Map works and why the mane six always obey it without question, I am going to complain about it every single time it causes an episode's plot.
-
@Princess Book Horse I kinda hate it, so I'd rather it disappeared entirely.
-
Now the rest of you get to experience case study 5 in Rarijack episodes almost always sucking. If it's a RariJack episode, my expectations are halved. Keep hoping for the show to prove me wrong, but it almost never does.

@AlexanderThrond They're from two different worlds. Their differences are why I love their pairing.
Except for "Simple Ways" aka the episode that ruined Rarity's "good episode streak", IMO.
-
I just don't find it entertaining to watch the two constantly expressing disgust at each other's tastes and habits. I wish they had even the slightest bit of common ground, or at least indicated they had some respect for each other's preferences and habits. "Honest Apple," which is what I was complaining about in this status update, was in the seventh season. They have been friends for years, and yet we only ever see them bring the worst out of each other.
-
Y'know, I always figure I'd be displeased if MLP became more adventure-focused like some fans really want, especially given how much they seem to like season 6's bizarrely popular "Gauntlet of Fire," but come to think of it that'd probably mean more episodes like "Stranger Than Fan Fiction," which I am 100% fine with.

@Lambdadelta I feel like worldbuilding can be done in a non-adventure episode too, as the yak episodes have shown us, and I don't think the show does this worldbuilding very well all that often. I also worry that big adventure episodes will be impersonal and kinda shallow, but I guess I don't care as long as they're funny.
-
@AlexanderThrond At least, "big adventure episodes" look FUN, action-oriented stories can be shallow but they are entertaining, a dull slice of life episode is far worse than a shallow adventure episode, i prefer watching a 22-minuted action-packed episode with shitty story than a dull slice of life one, they may be both throwable but i will choose the better one to kill time.
-
@Lambdadelta Hypothetically, sure, but "The Cutie Re-Mark" is a shallow adventure episode and I find it kinda dull. I guess I prefer a "Gauntlet of Fire" to a "Buckball Season," though, and when done well, those adventure episodes can be really fun every once in a while.

Not a day goes by where I don't dream of how awesome a proper My Little Pony sitcom would be.

You know, despite the recurring failures of communication and the surprisingly consistent family/legacy themes, I have absolutely no idea what the MLP season 7 finale could possibly be about. Aside from "Magical Mystery Cure," my least favourite finales are those of seasons 2 and 5, and those were also seasons which had almost nothing to make the finale about. But then, at least season 2's was novel for the time, and at least season 5 had Starlight. Especially looking at future synopses, I'm struggling to detect any consistent themes or arcs which could amount to a strong season finale. Maybe something will come up near the end; Twilight's anxiety about being a princess, which is what S4's finale was about, only really appeared in the last couple of episodes and even then wasn't part of the main story, so maybe it's too early to be saying this. But right now, I'm not seeing anything.

Not yet, to my understanding. I don't see how such a two-parter would be emotionally grounded, so I'm hoping for some kind of slice-of-life finale. Still want to see an episode just revolve around a big party.
@Lambdadelta Season 4 ended with Twilight finding purpose as a Princess, and season 6 ended with Starlight regaining confidence in herself. Perhaps not coincidentally, those seasons both came after big changes, whereas season 7 so far has not. I guess we could have Chrysalis, but I don't know what internal conflict that could involve.
-
@Lambdadelta To my eyes, season 1 still has the best finale by far. I'd like to see something simple yet somehow significant like that. Big party celebrating the six's achievements, I'm telling you.
-
"Not Asking for Trouble" - Nice to see this show being funny again, but this is a really simple episode with no internal conflict and a moral which the show did as far back as season 1. Doesn't even try to take on real-world xenophobia, because it's really just one person's fault. Any other season this would be nothing outstanding... but it's pretty neat to see this show being funny again.
-
@Kyoshi I much preferred "A Royal Problem," and even found that episode funnier, but this did feel like it had more space to breathe. I'm just glad we had two funny episodes in a row, because I have not had a great time with the rest of this season.
-
Okay fine "A Royal Problem" was actually really good. A little surprising that this overly plot-and-moral-focused episode is actually one of the funnier ones this season, but there you have it. Does a really good job keeping its story from becoming a slog while still having a lot of depth, and almost every plot beat feels earned. Starlight still has the same problems, but they worked for this story, and while I wish Luna and Celestia could have gotten more lighthearted hijinks, that wouldn't have fit, and both are given impressive nuance, if at the expense of potential quirks. The map is still awful, but Twilight is great for the second episode in a row; this is basically her "Viva Las Pegasus." Guess I was wrong to be worried!
-
I always feel like I'm alone in finding season 6 to be a massive improvement over season 5.

You ever thought about looking at an episode from another angle? Who knows, you may get a different outlook on it. Not saying your thoughts on the episode are wrong, but I'll be honest some of your criticism confused me.
I think Dark Qiviut put it best in this comment, and it's a very good point if you ask me.
-
I've tried. My problem remains that I don't know why Moondancer even expected Twilight to attend. Those flashbacks didn't convince me that Twilight had acted in any way to indicate she cared about Moondancer, so I don't really feel like Moondancer's bitterness is Twilight's fault. Dark Qiviut says "none of them plan to show up," but that's not exactly the scenario here: we see three other ponies show up, and Moondancer is the first to leave. Which would be fine if I had any idea why she expected Twilight to come in the first place. I agree more with the linked blog post itself, but I also recall finding it one of season 5's less dreary episodes, so it has that going for it.
-
I think a really fun episode could revolve around Starlight attending a kite festival. I like Starlight's kite interest so I'd like to see them commit to it so it seems less conspicuous.
-
It's kinda weird that after liking season 6 so much I've reached a point where I'm not looking forward to a single thing pony-related...
Maybe I should catch up on the comics.
-
I heard the new Equestria Girls thing had come out, but I guess it's not in English yet. Oh well. Hopefully it's better than Legend of Everfree...

Flash Sentry is a horse fucker.

"Honest Apple" sure is an Applejack/Rarity episode. I genuinely despise this dynamic, but this one came close to not being too intolerable. Too bad it fell right back into the character exaggeration which defines so many of these. Would it kill the writers to craft a Rarity and Applejack episode where both express some degree of sensitivity towards the other's interests? At this point I don't understand why they even spend time together. Anyway this has a few good jokes and a few bad ones, and its moral is deeply unbalanced. Not very good.
-
It's been so long since I hated an episode as much as I hate "Hard to Say Anything" that I had forgotten just how miserable it feels. Here I was thinking season 6's high quality would actually be, y'know, a trend going forward! And now we're getting stuff like this again? Stuff where harassment and invasions of privacy are considered absolutely fucking hilarious? Where is the moral amounts to "chicks aren't impressed by douchiness"? Where the Cutie Mark Crusaders are obnoxious little twerps? I am so fucking angry right now, and at this rate it seems like season 7 is going to be really, really long for me.

@Dark Qiviut I hated "Fluttershy Leans In" (and "All Bottled Up" for that matter), and excepting "Parental Glideance" and "A Flurry of Emotions," I found the others to not be very entertaining either, so I'm glad you're liking season 7, but I kinda hate it so far.
-
@Dark Qiviut I actually think "Fluttershy Leans In" is the best episode in the season to be honest.
-
FLI would've been much better had the conflict not start so late and end five minutes later and the episode not treat Fluttershy as completely in the right (when she, too, contributed to the problem).
-
I often hear that overanalyzing something leads to me liking it less, but some 90% of the time, I find the opposite to be true. If I don't like an episode, I'm probably just bored or irritated. But analyzing episodes which I am otherwise indifferent towards has often helped me appreciate more what they're trying to do.
-
Both of the good episodes this season are from new writers. Who would have guessed?
-
Okay so "Parental Glideance" was pretty fantastic. RD's parents are adorable! Having them be so overbearing and enthusiastic is just right for making it easy to see why they annoy her, but not so much that it annoys the audience. And it makes perfect sense for how Rainbow Dash turned out, as well! I'm just not so sure about that moral. I mean, as worded, it's wonderful, but I don't think Rainbow Dash was wrong to want her parents to dial it down a bit. I mean, they brought fireworks to a show! Isn't that a tad dangerous? I mean, it is adorable, but still. Would have loved it even more if it had stuck the landing and found a more nuanced moral.
-
"Forever Filly" - Would absolutely hate this if its moral weren't so good. Basically "Cart Before the Ponies" 2.0, a moral about how adults treat children which wouldn't work if Rarity displayed any sensitivity to others' feelings, but this time doesn't even have the good fortune of making the moral explicitly about ego. Doesn't allow a single joke to slip past not based directly on the moral, and as a result it just comes across as boring and sterile, as if someone scraped off any hint of personality in the editing phase.
-
So is it just me who thinks Starlight Glimmer has become a lot less interesting this season? Kinda feels like she's retreading the same territory without much of a fun personality or even many remaining insecurities.
-
I like to read episode synopses ahead of time. Right now, only half of the next ten excite me at all, and the other half... I just hope they're more entertaining than I expect.
