The universe is comprised of a “fabric” that can be best understood as a graph design. One set of lines is space, and the other is time. Any object with mass weighs down on space time. So imagine a trampoline. What happens when you put a bowling ball on it? The fabric bows downward. What if you put a 100 pound weight? It bows down farther.

Any object with sufficient mass bends space time in the same manner. Now suppose you take a ping pong ball and place it just where the trampoline starts to move down. The ball will follow the path to the bowling ball, right? But suppose you fling the ping pong ball on that curve at a high enough speed. It will begin to spin around that object until it loses momentum and eventually comes to rest against it. In other words, you made the ping pong ball achieve orbit until friction caught up to it.

When an object orbits another object, all it is really doing is falling towards the object and missing. The Earth is constantly falling towards the Sun, but since our momentum on this curve being made in space time By the sun’s mass is so quick, we always miss it and go around.

A black hole however is different. It’s so massive it literally becomes a hole in space time- a hole in the universe. When I do the tour of the black hole we will talk about this more in depth! Sound good?
