well, you can still plug the resistor directly to the arduino and read the data from there, the analog value will be juuuust the same for any supply voltage, as avrs use internal reference.

As a rule of a thumb, you should always choose an appropriate resistor for finest accuracy. :3

I just need to find a way to reliably switch from DC power to battery, then I can go ahead and complete all the soldering. Right now I'm thinking of a diode-OR circuit, but I don't know how to test if it works. =/

yeah i did! but i really want the simplest possible circuit cuz i'm running out of space on my perfboard so I opted for a diode-OR cuz apparently all it needs is two schottky diodes on each source to prevent backflow of current into each other
