    This is something I obsess too much over, but I really wish each state would be seen as purely individual, rather than just as 'America'. Too much use of the US flag and all that. I want to see state flags and celebrations of their individuality! Stuff like that, you know?

      The US is such a large country, and with the federal structure that it has a shared sense of being 'American' is probably an important component in keeping the country as a single country. Certainly there are plenty of pragmatic reasons for the various states to be united as a country, but having a general consensus that they should all be a single country is needed to actually keep them as a single country.

      But that's the thing, we technically aren't a single country, only under a federal banner. States can have their own laws and customs that can outright ignore or override federal legislation, not to mention each state's own culture and ideals. On top of that, the word 'state' is just another word for country anyways. I'd highly prefer individuality over mass conformity.

      I'd like to see more individuality but also more unity. We should stick together as one union, but states are individual entities too.
