gaming "Innovation"

People love throwing around that word to describe video games.  Because it's some sort of secret enchantment that will make a video game brilliant.  It is not.  Innovation is the introduction of a new idea, method, or device.  Notice that the description does not include "high quality".  As far as I can tell, Karate Kid was innovative, and that game is terrible.  Instead of trying to pretend that something in a game is new (when it really isn't), how about you try to explain how it makes the game better?

But major companies don't give two craps if they are using it correctly or not. The word sells. It moves copies. As long as people want the most "innovative" title, publishers will slap it on the description of their media in order to sell it.

I run into other people using this word more than I hear developers use it. And that's probably because I run into a lot of people supporting Nintendo and their WiiU.

Anyway, I always say that innovation is nice and all, but as a consumer it really isn't my top priority. More than anything I want a game to be entertaining.

This. We just wanna play games. It's in the very definition of who we are. Things that potentially get in the way of playing the game are bad juju but we often put up with the crap just so we can play.

Game companies should learn that one thing: We just wanna play the game. Cut out all the fat that would prevent us from getting straight to the game and playing it without worrying about whether it's the game or the controller or internet that's not functioning correctly.

I miss the days when games were actually, you know...  Games.  Title screen > press start > play.  Games have become increasingly cinematic; I don't want to play a movie.  I'm not overly concerned about story in most games, and gameplay / fun factor are far more important to me than graphics / hype or popularity / how "mature" the content is (blood, gore, language, sexual content).  I don't think gratuitous nudity and graphic violence are really envelope-pushing.

So far as innovation, specifically, is concerned...  An enjoyable game is an enjoyable game.  I thoroughly enjoy the NSMB series despite its relative lack of innovation.  I pick up a controller, I play them, I have fun.  Mission accomplished.  Not that I don't enjoy or value innovation - because I do.  Though perhaps it's more that I appreciate what helps me to better differentiate between this or that machine and provides me with interesting game play experiences / options.  I honestly don't see any reason to own either an Xbox One or a PS4.  Much less over a gaming PC.  I'd even rather play my RetroDuo and some 8-bit or 16-bit gem than I would the next GTA or CoD or what have you.  Press start and play.  Fun ensues.

Many gamers don't seem to want much innovation, I mean look at all the gamers who seem to discredit Nintendo. :derp:

But really, innovation in games is a fickle thing. Some people want it, and some people who want it get it and don't like it in the end. And some people just want things like their yearly military shooters and whatnot, which is okay really, although it does cause some rather annoying market saturation.

Gamers seem to be most concerned about the frame rate and resolution race nowadays though, and how games look in general. Games could still use some innovation on that front if you ask me though, as in portraying a vast majority of the game in gameplay over cutscenes and better animation in first-person games which I think even the casual military shooter player can agree on, but I'm no game designer, that's just some stuff I want to see anyway.

In short, I don't think most gamers know what they want until they play it, in terms of innovation. But I think we can all agree that a good innovation in modern games would be making the gameplay feel a bit better and be a more important component than it seems to be in a lot of today's games. That's what I think anyway. ;)

Yeah, modern game designers could definitely afford to step back from the 'cinematic aspect' a lot of them like to sell their games with. I think all of us gamers would benefit in the end if they let us play more while they tell their stories at least. Edited by Radiance64
