ManaMinori 4,146 June 18, 2014 Share June 18, 2014 I know that a pony OC (whether unicorn, pegasus, earth pony, or alicorn) is the default base people choose for their OC's, because, well...it's pretty obvious- the show and past generations of it, has always been called "My Little Pony". But even with those four options avaliable to the fanbase who like to make OC's, do you, the creator, or you, the onlooker of such OC's (perhaps from a popular brony artist) think that there is little to no willingness of pony OC artists/ creators to branch off into other closely related species (such as zebras, donkeys, breezies, flutter ponies, seaponies, ect); characters that are seen in the show/ toyline, whether in the previous or past generations; or even completely unrelated species to ponies, such as griffons, girraffes, minotaurs, bushwoolies, ect, that might exist outside the borders of Equestria; in neighboring or distant countries? Would these be OC;s that you'd like to see being done in the fandom? Frostgage 7,977 June 19, 2014 Share June 19, 2014 (edited) I'm not really into OC's so I can't speak for anyone else, but most people probably feel the closest connection to ponies, and like them better than other species. That's what got them into the show, after all. It would definitely be interesting to see OC's of other species, although too many might saturate the market. Scootalove 10,689 June 19, 2014 Share June 19, 2014 I like OCs really I do, they have a creative style to them when you are making the characters, but I think that ponies got people interested in the show. Don't know about the other species. Credit: Moony © Forum FAQ Forum Rules
Banul 3,831 June 19, 2014 Share June 19, 2014 Almost every character that matters is a pony, so it makes sense to me they people who make o.c.'s would gravitate towards ponies. They just appear to be the more important species. Also consider that we don't know a lot about the other species or their homelands. If we had more significant characters that are other species, or if characters like Zecora got more of the spotlight, I'd bet you would see an upswing in non-pony oc's. TenorSounds 832 June 19, 2014 Share June 19, 2014 Ponies seem to be the go-to (myself included) but you also see dragons, griffins and even deer and other-such creatures that haven't even been in the show yet. If someone already feels a connection to a certain animal (for instance, if they are furry and their fursona is already a deer or something) you're more likely to see something other than a pony. There's also the contrarians, who won't have an pony OC simply for the reason that everyone else has one. Personally I think it's very interesting when someone has a non-pony OC, but that doesn't detract from a lot of the very cool pony-OCs I've seen Check out my YouTube Let's Play Channel! I realize that it's the ponies, obviously, that drew people in, because it's a show about ponies. But doesn't mean that 99% of OC's have to be ponies, does it? I mean, yeah, the majority is going to be pony OC's, but there's more to the world than Equestria- as it's been repeatedly confirmed that it's just a country, and there are griffon kingdoms, dragons, zebra tribes, ect. I think OC's to those various nations and races could offer potentially awesome backstories and such that draw off of what lore was mentioned about them in the Diary of the Two Pony Sisters Under the Jellicle Moon- a site with cuteness, cat boys, and comic strips / Star Dreams Fanclub

On the show, yes. People make OCs of Dragons, Zebras, and other mythlogical creatures. We could have so much lore to be explored, yet in the show they need to do that more often. Hive King 2,001 June 20, 2014 Share June 20, 2014 Gryphons and dragons appear a good amount "Aren’t we the same? You know, aren’t you carrying the same mindset as I am? Just because you couldn’t bear to lose, you lost your precious partner! You really call yourself a true duelist? You’re the complete opposite of that!" -Weevil Underwood
ManaMinori 4,146 June 20, 2014 Author Share June 20, 2014 Gryphons and dragons appear a good amount true. They've both been given their own episodes, or seen in the background once or thrice. It'd be interesting to see more zebras. Or go back to Whitetail woods, which was shown in the Running of the leaves episode, and see some deer, maybe. (and hope the extra species will get content creators branching out a little more from ponies) Under the Jellicle Moon- a site with cuteness, cat boys, and comic strips / Star Dreams Fanclub
Duster Dawnhorse 248 June 20, 2014 Share June 20, 2014 My OC is an eohippus (see icon,) technically a pony in that eohippi are ponies from millions of years ago, but not a pony in the traditional sense. I've written other hooved races for tabletop roleplaying (sleipnir, kirin, peryton, eohippus, kelpie, and tikbalang) and have been tempted to make more non-pony OCs. They're just not as well recieved as the standard earth/pegasus/unicorn. Dattebayo 2,850 June 20, 2014 Share June 20, 2014 If you make your OC something else, it looks like you're trying really hard to be different. You know who ELSE tries really hard to be different?
