Lets say Luna crossed the speed of sound...  What would happen?

The trail, however, isn't part of the rainboom, and, thus, the trail depends on the pony. Luna's would be a dark blue, probably dotted with stars, like her mane.

While this is true, it has not been confirmed.. How would twilight be able to fly that fast without significant help or magic when in subsequent episodes and movies, she can barely fly? That's the primary basis of my theory.

How do you know that the reason she was training with Rainbow Dash in part 1 of Princess Twilight was to fix these issues you speak of?

 

Whether she used magic as a boost is besides the point,she did what she did,which was a Sonic Rainboom equivilant. It has been confirmed because we see it and its blatant similarities to the Sonic Rainboom and just because the show din't have a pony screaming that fact at us or care to mention it again beyond that episode doesn't mean it din't happen lol

Do we even know what a sonic rainboom is? What triggers it? Speed? Or is it a phenomenon that only Rainbow Dash can create as only she has created a true version of it. I didn't think it was the same thing when Twilight did her little flashy spectacle.

This is how I see the Sonic Rainboom: It's when a pony capable of flight goes so fast that they break the 'light-barrier', causing all of the separated light to shoot out in a radial, rainbow pattern.

 

That's not what Twilight did. For all we know, she just released a burst of magic at a particular moment while flying.

Its actually really that simple. The Sonic Rainboom is an aerobatic event that combines the effects of a sonic boom and a rainbow together hence the term "Sonic Rainboom." In the Cutie Mark Chronicles its detailed that people just thought that the Sonic Rainboom was a myth passed on. That fact alone suggests that it probably wasn't named after Rainbow Dash, but rather its a convenient coincidence that she happens to be named Rainbow and can pull of the the event. Based upon  Wonderbolts Academy we may even go as far as to say that the event is unique to those that have a rainbow mane, just a Lightning Dust leaves a lightning streak? Why? Magic or you know, cartoon logic like Pinkie Pie. Screw physics.

 

If someone like say, Lightning Dust somehow performed a similar event to the Sonic Rainboom with its identical traits, it'd still be a Sonic Rainboom. If Dust pulled off a similar event but for example say, it left a lightning trail and sparkled, it might be called a Lightning Boom, Thunder Boom, etc. Its that simple.

Your theory makes less sense than which the show actually presents.

 

You cannot break the "light-barrier" for does that not imply that you have broken light speed?

 

The term "breaking the sound-barrier" means you are moving faster than sound. Saying that Rainbow broke the "light-barrier" is like saying she was moving faster than light,which she clearly was not lol. 

 

Fine,its a show about flying ponies ect but cartoon logic aside it appears that most people assume the maneuver RD did is the only way that it would look like because it was the only time we have seen such(and had verbal confirmation of what it was,which would be most likely unique to the mane of the pony that created it),and while yes nobody said "OMG TWILIGHT DID A *Insert maneuver*" doesn't mean it din't happen,this was  blatantly like the sonic rainboom and if it wasn't then why the blatant similarities?

Why not just have Twilight do something completely different and nothing even resembling the sonic rainboom?

 

Until the show states otherwise,Twilight did the maneuver and i guess it should be said to stop assuming RD is the only pony on the entire planet capable of doing that maneuver,Rainbow is damn good at flying,but  we cannot assume the maneuver she did is impossible to do by any other pony alive without proper training,which Twilight was clearly doing with RD in the previous episode.
