Why does Applejack run Sweet Apple Acres?

It has been shown time and time again that it takes both AJ and Big Mac to run the farm.

When Big Mac was out of commission in Applebuck Season, AJ nearly worked herself to death trying to take up the slack.

In Magical Mystery Cure after Applejack left the farm it quickly fell into disrepair and ruin.

As long as Granny is still around, she is the official owner/operator. It's anybody's guess what will happen to the farm after she's gone.

Big Mac does more of the strenuous labor like plowing and Applejack collects apples and does the financial end of the business.

Actually in the episode Applebuck Season what Applejack said about Big Mac using his "fancy mathematics" to muddy up the issue seems to imply that Big Mac is fairly good with numbers. It has shown Applejack do the business end of things in several episodes but Big Mac probably helps with that as well.

I believe that it is most likely a joint partnership between Big Mac and Applejack.

Though, Applejack definitely does most of the Public Relations.

I feel Big Mac would probably take care of the finances and assets more while Applejack promotes the business.

Yes, Applejack is more open than her brother, but usually family run businesses are passed to the first born, which in this case is Big Mac. What's your theory? (and before someone brings it up, yes, I know that the original idea was for Big Mac to run the farm)

I don't look at physical age, or else Granny Smith would still run the farm, I look at age in maturity. And I believe Applejack is more mature in Big Mac and one reason is she is an out going leader. Big Mac, although he is 1 dimensional seems pretty shy and/or quiet whereas; someone who operates a business or is a represenative for one will have to be able to commuicate and do so, well.

That is one of few examples I can say for certain. Applejack is clearly a leader so why shouldn't she lead the farm? From what we have seen from Big Mac he doesn't possess a skill set that would allow him to do such a thing like lead a family business.

I wouldn't call that a difference in maturity but more one of personality/skill set. Applejack is fairly extroverted and good with ponies thus making a good public face of Sweet Apple Acres. Big Mac is much more introverted and while he probably could speak for Sweet Apple Acres if he had to he dosen't have those natural people skills that Applejack has. He could also take charge if need be and probably had to when Applejack was a bit younger but Applejack is much more opinionated while Big Mac seems a  tad more easy going. Both personality types and skill sets are valuable in their own ways in addition to having a few drawbacks. Big Mac is probably just as mature as Applejack and possibly even more so, but is just more introverted and less opinionated than her.

I agree with that. My miswording.

(edited)

Because the Apples seem to have a matriarchal lead to it. Granny Smith was the leader and now she passes it onto Applejack.

Applejack is also more ambitious, organized and has the guts to do better business and gather family together.

Agreed that it's probably both of them running the Sweet Apple Acres. Though, I'm guessing BigMac's running it most of the time, since AJ is out going on adventures and whatnot.

  • 1 year later...

A bit of a necro here, but after Where the Apple Lies, I think we know who REALLY runs Sweet Apple Acres:

Aside from the fact that she tells Applejack and Big Mac that neither will run the farm anytime soon as long as she's around, everyone at the end, including Apple Bloom acknowledge Granny as the head of the farm. She doesn't have the might of Big Mac, or the brains of Applejack, but she has the experience and intuition, including the influence over Filthy Rich. Guess elders do often know better than us.

Cwanky made possibly the best point now. It seems Granny Smith is the current Overseer of the farm and family business. Most likely she is training both Applejack and Big Mac to one day run the farm, possibly together. I wouldn't mind that outcome. ^-^
