Pony and mix breeds

Would it be possible for a pony to be born with two pony traits?
As we know, an alicorn is made of three ponies, an amalgamation of Earth ponies as well as Pegasi and Unicorns. But what if a pony had two traits, say they had a pegasus mother and an earth pony father? How would this affect them? Their are two potential candidates that lead me to believe that this would affect the child: Pinkie Pie, and Fluttershy.

Pinkie Pie seems to be an earth pony, but has the speed and agility of a pegasus. The fact that she could possibly be adopted means that her parents could potentially be from two different races.

Fluttershy is a pegasus, but she's a weak flier. She more exhibits the traits of an earth pony, a love of the earth and the animals that live on it. Her parents have still yet to be seen; it's possible that one of them is an earth pony as well.

In both cases, parents are suspect or missing. Is it possible that mixed breeds aren't well received in Equestria? We've yet to see a pony with mixed parents. This brings me to scootaloo: is it possible that one of her parents is an earth pony too? This might explain her absentee parents and her current inability to fly? At the very least, it opens up yet more questions about her origins.
So, what do you think? Is there a possibility that mixed breed ponies do exist? Is it something that's covered up, or just doesn't happen? Discuss below.

The subject is alluded to with the Cake family, and I would be interested to see how their children progress with age.  At the moment, both seem very strong in their apparent racial traits (the flying and magical abilities and all).

*cough* I don't think it's possible, Pinkie Pie's parents are both earth ponies. She's just faster than the earth pony average, but that doesn't mean she has pegasus traits.

Same goes for Fluttershy, she just doesn't like to fly.

I see where you are coming from and that may also be possible however the breed/race of the pony does not always mean they are strong at a skill (like Pegasus flight/agility, earth, their love for nature and strength, and with unicorns magic and possibly wiser than the other types of ponies however does this really mean only them races of pony can be skilled at they are meant for or maybe not all of that pony race are skilled to what they are meant to and more skilled around another task often taken on by one of the other races I do see where you are going and that is VERY possible but we don't really know...

Mr. and Mrs. Cake are both earth ponies, but they bore a Unicorn and a Pegasus. There's probably a lot more at work than just a simple punnet square for Pony genetics in this regard.

In an episode, it is mentioned that non-pegasus ponies cannot walk on clouds.  Fluttershy is from Cloudsdale.  It's not like her parents could of gone down there, could they have?  Plus, Fluttershy, has been shown to be fast before, like in Hurricane Fluttershy with the tornado.  So yeah.

One thing I can agree with this:

Pinkie and her sisters could of been adopted together.  They have the same surname(if that means the last name) therefore, that, could support your theory. While her parents, Cloudly Quartz and Igneous Rock have different surnames than the children.

I'm sure that there are recessive traits just like animals in our current world have, so if there is the proper combination of recessive traits, than the traits could manifest.

Hmm, I wonder if the Alicorn ascension process rewrites DNA to include all pony traits, or if it adds DNA where there was none? Or can only specific ponies become Alicorns? Magic vs Science... I could do this forever.
