Why is Big Macintosh so powerful?

Earth Ponies are said to physically be the strongest race of pony. In that regard, as strong as Earth Ponies go, Big Mac seems to be in a league all his own. But the question is, why? Applejack has been working on the farm nearly as long, and she doesn't seem to come anywhere close to matching his strength.

Because men on average are able to build muscle more quickly and easily than women because they have much higher testosterone levels. Applejack is ridiculously strong, stronger than even most stallions but Big Mac still has the advantage due to nature just working out that way. Though thanks to Maud Pie's years on a rock farm I think she may in fact be even stronger than Big Mac.

I think it also has something to do with him being based on the Clydesdale breed. Those horses are massive, and can just about pull anything.

I'm happy to see I'm not the only one who thinks that this might be the case :maud:

^^^^ perhaps but only when rocks are concerned, as she would know where the points are weakest on the rocks.

I suppose Big Mac has a lot of experience in that line of work, I mean if you were to go around hauling a massive cart of apples everyday, I'm fairly certain there'd be much more muscle development going on.

I'm not exactly sure on the details, but I'm going to go ahead and say it anyway, On a side note, I'd have to argue that Earth Ponies have more raw power.

He's like a draft horse. A wall of muscle. He's probably the strongest Earth pony around, at least physically. So yeah a mix of Earth Pony magic and just a really strong build... Plus... Cartoons. Y'know.

He's strong in certain situations... Like how people can lift cars with enough adrenaline. People are only 1/3 as strong as they can be at all times, so that you can't hurt yourself, but the fight or flight reaction triggers full strength. A man lifted a 2000 pound car to save someone. Big Mack seems possibly similar, showing strength in times of need. Probably unrelated to all my science stuff there, but meh, it's a thought.

How about the simple fact that Big MacIntosh was born big boned AND works on a farm doing manual labor 24/7? I don't even need to throw in the fact that Big MacIntosh has earth pony strength. Those 2 factors make him exceptionally strong as it is.

That and Big Mac is a very hard worker. With that kind of work ethic and routine its no surprise he would be incredibly strong, both physically and mentally.

He looked less strong when he was younger:

I think his strenght is only due to the fact that he has worked in a farm for many years.

but here the thing, he's 'bigger' than a full grown mare here and he's still a colt.

Not only has he worked on a farm for years, but I'm pretty sure that Yoke he wears is weighted.

He must be like 15 years old on the pic.

Plus Granny Smith is a little smaller than a full grown mare (I think?).

not my much, no other colt even approaches mac's size.

and if Mac is 15 here then we've got the only picture of the 'teenage' pony that doesn't exist in the show. XD

But I'm pretty sure he's a teenager here :( (thus we can't compare him to a normal colt)

That doesn't disprove any notion that he was born with superior strength. A lot of athletes don't grow to be bigger, stronger and more athletic until they've hit maturity at a certain age and their hormones start kicking in accelerating the growth spur.

That isn't to say that  being bigger necessarily makes you stronger, but I think in this case, its strongly suggested that at least in part Big Mac's strength is derived from his bigger body. Not only that, but Big Mac is also bigger (and stronger) than most of the average male Earth ponies the show has shown.

Big Mac is strong, and that is his main attribute. Applejack isn't as strong but she makes it up in smarts and lots of organizational work. Big Mac works physically, but that is pretty much it. He's a good singer, but that's a minor random talent, added for comedy effect by the writers.

It's like we put most of his imaginary stat points into strength and constitution. He isn't dumb, but he is specialized in manual labor. It's his destiny to work on the farm, of course he will be amazing at it.
