Old Fluttershy 349 August 9, 2014 Share August 9, 2014 In Ponyville confidential the CMC created a gossip column about the citizens of Ponyville. After some time all the ponies just kind of shunned them or turned them away. Yet, these same citizens wanted to read about this stuff. RD even goes as far as saying she wanted Gabby Gums to do a column on her. So the CMC were just giving the ponies what they wanted. So were the ponies right to be so mean to them? Or should they turn at least some of the blame on themselves?
Handmade 47 August 9, 2014 Share August 9, 2014 It's all about being careful what you wish for. By wanting 'juicy' stories of the inhabitants of Ponyville, the people forgot how they themselves can fall under the trap of journalism and gossip. It's hypocrisy, but also, the CMC broke the 'freedom of press' right, where the press can submit whatever they please, so long as it does not effect anyone negatively. Both the press and the populace are at fault.

Mythic Pony 16 August 9, 2014 Share August 9, 2014 I can't really, the only person I can really blame is Diamond Tiara Agreed, I mean they were just kinda following orders, and strict ones at that. Can't really put the blame on them at all. 3 ~*~ Sometimes those without wings fly the highest of all ~*~

Old Fluttershy 349 August 10, 2014 Author Share August 10, 2014 but I was hoping the episode would end with a column on Diamond Tiara. Ditto, as that would have been hilarious!
ShadowPirateX 600 August 10, 2014 Share August 10, 2014 Well the CMC were blackmailed into writing gossip about others by Diamond Tiara. Plus, the Foal Free Press (what an ironic name) was changed into a gossip newspaper. By Diamond Tiara. So who do I blame? Diamond freaking Tiara! 2 "Freedom is the right of all sentient beings" ~ Optimus Prime

Shanks 10,816 August 10, 2014 Share August 10, 2014 Pretty much everypony was to blame here, the public wanted gossip and they got it but didn't seem to have a problem with it until they themselves became the targets which was really hypocritical. The CMC were reluctant at first but did give in to the temptation to pander to a public by appealing to the lowest common denominator, and of course there is Diamond Tiara who as editor encouraged these kind of stories even going so far as to resorting to blackmail to keep them coming. I also kind of wonder where Ms. Cheerilee was in all of this? It got to the point where the whole town was reading Gabby Gums so I am sure she must have been familiar with some of the material posted in there. She did intervene at the end but only after a lot more damage was done than should have been. Well the CMC were blackmailed into writing gossip about others by Diamond Tiara. True, but Diamon Tiara only started to blackmail them after they tried to stop because of the guilt they felt for the gossip columns they already published before that. 2 Rarity Get's Cockroaches
Banul 3,831 August 10, 2014 Share August 10, 2014 Just because everyone was reading it, it doesn't make it right. Ponies encouraged them, sure, but only ones that didn't have a column written about them yet. It should have been apparent that what they were writing would be embarrassing and that it would make ponies feel bad. What's more I think that, on some level, they knew what they were doing was wrong because they all seemed reluctant to do it at the outset. So, I think it's fair to lay the blame at their feet. What's important is that they learned their lesson though, so all is well.
paradoxical 1,735 August 10, 2014 Share August 10, 2014 Twilight realized early on that their column was a problem, which indicates that the public had an ability to say that it wasn't an ok way to treat others. I think the "just following orders" issue comes into play. At what level does culpability play a key role? DT told them to print Juicy. They did. Some of it wasn't so true. That's quite bad reporting. I'd say that they were truly culpable for that. The first column didn't seem harmful in S&S's view, so if they had put the columns for review from those who were involved, maybe they could have been juicy yet non-harmful.
Amethyst Shine 15 August 10, 2014 Share August 10, 2014 They should've turned the blame on themselves. It's not right to spread rumors around about people. 1 "Purple is a magnificent color, don't you think?"
Rainblow H. Ash 5,091 August 10, 2014 Share August 10, 2014 I personally enjoyed watching the Cutie Mark Crusaders tear apart their community with gossip and hope they'll do it again in the near future. As for blame, it really falls all over the place. You can't just blame the Cutie Mark Crusaders, but they did write the columns so it's hard not to assign a big portion of the blame to them. At the very least they felt remorse the whole time, so at least they weren't doing it out of pure malice. 2 #bringbackmerriwetherwillaims

Sunny Fox 5,953 August 12, 2014 Share August 12, 2014 Almost everyone is a bit to blame in this episode except Twilight, who were right all along... Although she was more willing to put up a forcefield to keep them out rather than actually interacting with them, and explaining why they were wrong. Rarity did better, if you ask me. Subscriber Denim&Venöm 20,296 August 13, 2014 Subscriber Share August 13, 2014 The CMC may have started all this, but they were the first to try and back out of the situation. Who's really at fault? The public for creating the demand and enabling the CMC, only to act like hypocrites in the end. Diamond Tiara for forcing the CMC to continue. Cheerilee for not supervising a group of preteens, one of the most inconsiderate, insensitive, immature and attention hungry demographics in existence. Featherweight for providing the evidence and not once questioning the ethics of what he was doing.

Namely the ones who pushed the innocent CMC and used Featherweight. Cheerile did have some fault in this for not making sure Tiara wouldn't just go mad with power, which Tiara did.
