anyone know how to sprite and whatnot? it'd be super if I could get some tips or tutorials. the brony community tends to dabble a lot into the genre so why not ask for help here?

Well you open Paint, and you make stuff with pixels. Well really it's any paint program, it's just a bunch of squares that build up the thing. Minecraft is also another way to do pixel art because of the cubes.

I've done pixel art quite a bit, and this site is a really good place to get started: http://www.petesqbsite.com/sections/tutorials/tuts/tsugumo/

It goes over the basics, and is a great starting point. You should also get sprites from classic games and place with them (http://spriters-resource.com/). Try editing, recoloring and mixing them around to get used to how pixels work with each other. You can just use MS Paint for pixel art, it's surprisingly good at it (it's what I use).

Honestly, there's a lot of technique to learn, but it's mostly practice. My first sprite maybe 5 years ago was a black and white stickfigure. Now I've gotten very nifty at retro-styled pixel-arting, and even better at tiling (spriting refers to drawing NPC, player, enemy, etc. sprites, tiling refers to making tiles that would be used in a tiling rendering system in a game).

While his pixel art tutorial is very short, with only a few examples, Derek Yu's tutorial shows off a lot of important techniques, and if nothing else will help you understand what you need to practice to get better: http://www.derekyu.com/?page_id=218
