ios 3 March 26, 2012 Share March 26, 2012 hello there, I am not really sure if I can do this in here but at least I am going to try... (since this is my first post ever) anyway, I am studying philosophy, currently the master´s degree and I am working on my thesis right now. the curious thing is that more than philosophy itself I am working with language and literary theory with a mix classic physocological theory. My thesis is trying to make a theory that in base of work( as per marx understands it) language and concience comes to be, and that language is a pre-requsite of concience just like concience is the pre-requisite of language( think as two sides of a same coin, each other being the alpha and omega of the other) So, thanks to that is that the individual being exist and so on the community and the social relations playing what we call language games, complex interrelations betwen the linguistic indivuduals with the object of create and perfect the work of language and conciencie, thus creating a "social theatre" in wich the commmunity and the individual once more becomes a two sided coin. the ponit is I need something in which I can prove that, and really think that friendship is magic is up to the task. I am absolutely conviced that complex mechanics of the show are a very good proof of that, and I been dying to discuss this with other bronies, you know, if you are interested and you want ot help me of course. I have various drafts in which I attempt to analize the innate structure of the show, as I have already identified several discursive levels in it, so I am more than happy tho share my thoughts. Right know I think I have a solid appreciation of the interrelation of several discursive levels of the mane 6, as well of their achievement of their linguistic work and performances in the social theatre. So, IF anypony is interested I am more than open to discussion. thank you so much!

Key Gear 6,663 March 26, 2012 Share March 26, 2012 (edited) I really do wish that I could help you with this, but I am, unfortunately, something of a dilettante in philosophy. I have very little formal academic experience in the field. (Darn it Jim! I'm an Economist, not a Philosopher!) Besides Kyronea and Pencils, Thereisnospoon303 may also be able to provide some type of useful input to your project. I am a bit curious about this though. Let me see if I understand you right. Your theory is that "language" and "consciousness" are mutually causal? How is it that you believe that Friendship is Magic can provide evidence to support your thesis? Edit: Actually, YourAverageBronie582 has a really good idea. Ios, is there any way that you could "dumb" your thesis down a bit so that us non-philosopher bronies would be able to comment on it more easily? Page.Turner 940 March 26, 2012 Share March 26, 2012 I don't know... just throwing this out there... but what career can you possibly get with a master's in Philosophy aside from standing on the streets with a sandwich board that says, "The end is nigh"? >____>;;; 1 ... ios 3 March 27, 2012 Author Share March 27, 2012 oh my... I really thought this would pass COMPLETELY unnoticed... and yeah ,real sorry about going nuts with terms and stuff, I really tend to get carried away( I just love my career XDD) well, yes scootacool you got it right, I really believe they are mutual causal, one cannot simply exist whitout the other. think in symbiosis, they depend to each other to survive by helping each other various ways( hope this makes more sense) now Im going to try to symplify things: I believe that each person can call himself or herself a person because he think(rationalize, not mere natural reflexes), speak, write, paint( art in general if you will). with these traits the person becomes self aware, aware that he or she has them. so when the person is self awere he or she needs express it for whatever reason, and with some effort creates a system to finally express, he needs to if the person wishes to survive. with a little more effort more persons in the same situation realize that if they combine their self awarennes they become much more effective in wathever they are doing, at the end they complete a system, a common system that they can understand and use to improve themselves. with tjis system now they can fully understand personally and at least gave themselves an idea of the other persons, in return all the members help each other to accomplish that understanding. So by finally speaking, writting, etc we can make persons out of the others jusk like they do with us, creating the common language, self awareness and concience of a community. phew... I hope that makes more sense... answaring why ponies fit into this could vey tricky... but I can say that as a wrriten and acted show is no different to a novel, and it is also a simmulation of life, in that sense I think is perfect for my work. I strongly belive that the show is perfect metaphor of the human relkations of almost every kind, so yeah... ( I am suuuuuuuuch ab egghead XDD) by the way you do not need any phylosopical mumbo jumbo to join the disccusion, I mean any simple contribution as simply as " twilight is magic because of her inteligence" is much appreciated! please do not think that obvious things do not count( they often make the difference in my field XDD) oh and of course I have my board with the end is neigh... one can never be truly prepared . FlutterDerpy582 89 March 27, 2012 Share March 27, 2012 real sorry about going nuts with terms and stuff, I really tend to get carried away( I just love my career XDD) Completely understandable! It warms my heart to see some pony love what they do! Anyways, I now have a basic understanding of what your thesis is so here are my thoughts. First off, MLP:FIM is a completely workable topic. The whole show basically revolves around the pony's finding out their strengths and weaknesses, and essentially, going through various events to see what they can do to improve upon it. Fluttershy in "Putting your Hoof down" (Season 2, Episode 19) being the biggest example in my opinion. She went from a very quiet, pushover attitude, to worshiping a power hungry mentor, and modified back to a nicer, yet more assertive Fluttershy. This specific example fits in with your thesis because, Fluttershy undoubtedly became self aware that she took her assertiveness training way too far. This made her realize that she took the original traits that Iron Will (the mentor, if you are unaware) told her, became self aware she took it way too far, and ultimately benefited from it. Furthermore, Fluttershy states at the end of the episode "When I first stood up for myself, I didn't like the pony I became, but I've learned that standing up for yourself isn't the same as changing who you are.", this states she has used her concience to take a situation she was not the best at dealing with, got the basic idea at full throttle, and essentially combined it with her personal experience, or her what she was self aware of at the time, and greatly benefited from the experience. I'll be more then happy to help you more with examples, etc. I just want to make sure I'm on the right track before I go on. Let me know!
Daring Do 195 March 27, 2012 Share March 27, 2012 Well... why not? There are plenty of great values and great subjects that could relate to ponies that could have them applicable to a master's degree. Hay, when I first viewed the title in this post, I was thinking "I would double major that like no one has ever done before..." Great adventuring for great treasures!....Except when I'm hurt... Smokin'HotRarity 182 March 27, 2012 Share March 27, 2012 sorry but language has nothing to do with morals. it is all about feelings and emotions. morality is a chemical thing more than it is a logical thing. sorry spock. S.V.R. Stop. Violent. Recreation, I know it's tuff but let's all try to stop playing violent videogames, violent TV, violent thinking, and just violence in general. Exactly!!! a very good example of the social theatre gentleman. you see I envision what you just pointed out like a chess game. Just like every movement creates a series possible games, so does the interactions between the characters, every movement is based in what everypony is capable of doing in their personal understanding, and by making the movement they change and condition all of the other ponies possible movements. the tricky part is to find the implications of the differents games playing in here, because with every little movement, the game changes a starts a new, filling it with new possible outcomes. what I can add to your insight is that at the same time fluttershy re-shaped herself with iron will´s intervention, so did rarity and pinkie, just by putting in doubt their very reason to be, wich in turn kicked fluttershy again in her understanding possibilities which finally leads to a whole new level of concience between the three, thus making evident their mutual dependence in the linguistic level.... and I am rambling again... but of course you are on the right track, oh please oh please say you will continue XDD Edited March 27, 2012 by ios
cuteycindyhoney 13,307 March 27, 2012 Share March 27, 2012 Degree in Ponies? Don't take this the wrong way, but I don't see many future prospective employers being impressed with you writing your thesis based on the ideals as presented in a cartoon. I love MLP:FIM, but I don't see it as anything more then a really fun show to watch. I find it strange that so many people seem to find the meaning of life in 22 minute doses. I see your point, maybe I should be more clear in that respect. I am not really presenting a pony related project, this is more an exercise of my theories upon the show. If I can do a good exercise with mlp then surely I can do it with my real working material. It just that the show is soo good that I really think that it deserves some kind of formal treatment, also I doing at the same time two of my most precious things in the world

Yes, making me wear my reading glasses is a good thing! My eyes are terrible, and it's difficult for me to read text on the screen using my regular glasses. Kraznor 33 March 28, 2012 Share March 28, 2012 I can try to aid in this cause, though I don't enjoy using jargon associated with any one school of thought so I shall express my thoughts as I please. What exactly would you want to know? How I'm interacting with the show? Links between the messages in the show and everyday reality? The potential applications of the relationship dynamics and dilemmas in the show to the society I live in? Something else entirely? I'm up for musing about ponies, just give me a topic. According to some survey somewhere, most like Rainbow Dash. Was not expecting that result but I suppose it makes sense.
