In her youth, Miss Tricis was a well-known and respected teacher of combat and magic. Her students were world renowned for their bravery, power, and honor. To be selected by her as a student was an honor, but that was nearly sixty years ago.

 

After one failure, one stain on her record that couldn't be expunged, she vanished. Her name soon faded into obscurity. It could be assumed that she had died, whether by old age or to one of her many enemies. If that was true, then Sole had received a letter from a ghost.

 

The letter had no formal heading. Instead, it skipped straight to the point.

 

Sole, I have heard of your victory in the Dark Tournament. It's not often that I am impressed by a warrior's raw talent. Congratulations, you've broken the streak. However, raw talent is not all that makes a warrior. Your strength is wasted on your underdeveloped brain. I am inviting you to partake in an indeterminate amount of formal training. I will work with you for as long as it takes for you to become a respectable fighter. You will learn my name if you come, and my reasons are my own.

Your training will be grueling, painful, and I'm not giving you any nap-time. This will be unlike anything you have ever experienced, and there's always a chance that it could kill you. If you're up to the task, find me. If not, go to hell.

 

There was no return address. Instead, there was a set of coordinates in the wooded mountains behind Canterlot.

Sole sighed in annoyance as he looked at the small map and reread the note while he walked through the forest. He could've easily flown, but the trees would've made it difficult to spot any houses. "Really hope this is real, it'd suck to have gone all the way out here for nothing..." he mumbled, before finally getting a glimpse of what looked like a house just up ahead. With a smile of relief he flew towards it eagerly and knocked on the door "anyone home?" He called

Sole sighed in annoyance as he looked at the small map and reread the note while he walked through the forest. He could've easily flown, but the trees would've made it difficult to spot any houses. "Really hope this is real, it'd suck to have gone all the way out here for nothing..." he mumbled, before finally getting a glimpse of what looked like a house just up ahead. With a smile of relief he flew towards it eagerly and knocked on the door "anyone home?" He called

The house was a shanty looking building with no lights on inside. It was painted pasty yellow with light green details, but the paint was fading with age.

 

After Sole knocked, he heard a response from inside. Tricis' voice called to him, withered with age. "I already invited you inside! Do you need me to tell you how to open the door? Don't strain yourself too hard now. Doorknobs can be complicated."

Sole smiled sheepishly and opened the door "heh, sounds like such a nice old lady. I can already tell this is gonna be fun."he thought sarcastically, as he walked inside "would you rather me just walk in if you weren't home or something? I could've been a burglar, or a serial killer for all you know." He joked "so... your gonna train me? Aren't you a little... er, retired?" He finished

The inside of the house was almost as dainty as the outside. There was minimal furniture and the only light came from the windows. Tricis was sitting at a small table in the center of her kitchen, sipping a cup of hot tea. The table had room for one more.

 

"Yes, I'm always getting burglars here in the middle of scenic nowhere. They're always trying to steal my rotten doorpost. Now will you kindly shut the hell up and come into the kitchen?"

Sole decided not to argue with the angry old pony and followed "whatever you say 'sensei'." He joked, as he walked into the kitchen "so, is my first lesson how to cook or something?" He asked, only half serious. He didn't know what he was expecting, but it certainly wasn't this

Tricis didn't say or do anything to acknowledge Sole. She simply stayed in her seat with her eyes closed and took a calm sip of her tea. It was as if she was expecting Sole to do something, but she gave no indication as to what it was.

 

So this is where my legacy is going? Damn it all. I suppose I deserved this.

Tricis didn't say or do anything to acknowledge Sole. She simply stayed in her seat with her eyes closed and took a calm sip of her tea. It was as if she was expecting Sole to do something, but she gave no indication as to what it was.

sole stood there quietly for a moment, fidgeting and looking around the small kitchen. He wasn't a very patient individual to begin with, and being stuck in an old house with a cranky pony and nothing to do wasn't helping. "Sssoooooo... what now?" He asked impatiently

"What's 'now' is that I expect you to stop standing there like a complete dimwit and take a seat! If you couldn't figure that out by yourself, then I expect I'll die of old age before you become a respectable fighter!" Tricis hostilely barked. She had her own reasons for acting in such a bitter manner.

She did warn him it'd be rough, and he preffered his trainers to NOT hate him. I would have preferred an apprentice like Crimson Grinn or Selune Darkeye. Somepony with at least half a brain for me to work with, but you're the one who defeated Mason single-handedly. I was running out of time to make my decision when that happened."

I would have preferred an apprentice like Crimson Grinn or Selune Darkeye. Somepony with at least half a brain for me to work with, but you're the one who defeated Mason single-handedly. I was running out of time to make my decision when that happened."

Sole just shrugged "hey, I may not be very book smart, but if there's one thing I know it's how to fight." He said with a grin, before pausing in thought for a moment 'was destroying that asshole seriously the main reason she chose me? I know he was strong, but...' After a moment Sole shook off his confusion and continued "so... If you need someone to pass your knowledge onto, I'm your griffon." He finished

"Well now, you seem quite eager to get started, but if you're really as strong as you think you are then why did you come all the way here?" Tricis asked. She was now getting into the more serious questions she intended to ask. "Why do you want to be stronger?"

sole suddenly became more serious as he spoke, the joking tone dropping away and being replaced with a calm strong one. "I've... Lost people close to me before. I lost them because I wasn't good enough. There are times where I've wished and begged and cried that I could get stronger, that I needed to be stronger. I never want to feel that useless in a fight again, and I will never watch helplessly as someone I care about dies... Not again. I'll keep getting stronger till nothing can hurt the ones I love." He explained quietly, before suddenly smiling again. But somehow, this one wasn't as big before, as if some part of him were still reliving a bad memory "That a good enough answer for ya?" He finished

Tricis wasn't surprised by this answer. It was, in fact, the answer she expected him to give. "In order to train you I must know that you understand this simple truth." She said after a brief time of silence. "There will be times when it doesn't matter how strong you are. Death won't always give you a fighting chance. You and your friends will age and wither, and everyone must pass on at some point. I have a very important question. Are you afraid of losing your ability to protect others? Are you afraid of losing your strength?"

But I guess whatever happens, happens. If I lose my strength one day, then I'll just find another way to help them." He answered honestly; he pictured Stone and his unborn child, as well as his other family and friends, and he couldn't help but feel sad. She was right, Death was one enemy he couldn't beat. It didn't matter how powerful he was, he couldn't change life and death. "But, as long as I have this power, I'll keep getting stronger. Death may come for me and my friends one day, but I won't let it happen without a fight. Logic be damned!" He finished, his sadness replaced with determination. It may have been foolish, but it was something he believed In. Even if the fight was hopeless, he'd fight on until it was over for better or worse.

You'd better commit to whatever it is! The moment your pursuit of strength becomes more important to you than the reason you seek it is the moment you become a monster! "I didn't tell you that earlier because this is literally the first time I've met you and it didn't seem like a good conversation starter!" Tricis snapped back. "I've had a lot of students, Sole, and some of them were even dumber than you."

 

She stood up from the table and stepped out the door to the kitchen leading outside. "Follow me outside. Your training begins immediately. We're starting with the basics."

Sole stayed where he was for a moment, before sighing deeply and following the wise pony outside "the basics are good I guess. So what do I have to do? Pick up my jacket? Wax on wax off?" He asked jokingly, regaining some of his cockiness and swagger from before.

As they exited the kitchen, they entered an area of short grass surrounded by trees. There was nothing pony made to be seen aside from her small shack. "Now, do you have any more smart ass remarks before we begin?"
