technology The Glorious PC master race thread

The laptop I posted can actually be configured with a 4790k, and is $400 cheaper with that config. Not sure if the Origin PC has better cooling for higher OCs, but the Sager is built on the Clevo platform which is sturdy and usually has good cooling.

EDIT: Upon further research, I am pretty positive that both the Sager and Origin PC are built in the same Clevo frame. Therefore, they should have identical cooling performance

And I finally got my PC built. Here is my glorious build, sorry for shitty camera quality, my phone sucks.

PA7410O.jpgKsm2vtZ.jpgAnd the specs:

Intel core i5 4690k

XFX Radeon R9 270x 2G

8GB G-skill Ripjaw DDR3 1600mhz

Fractal Design Define R4

750w Corsair bronze certified PSU

Asus Maximus VI Hero LGA 1150 Mobo

Oh, and my monitor is an Asus 24" 144Hz 1080p 1ms

Pretty nice, although why the 270X?

I didn't have that much from my tax return and I had already ordered the card before the 290x was discounted, and the 280x was a little out of my price range. My 270x is still really good for me, and besides, when I get a good chunk of money, I'l probably get a gtx 970.

also, I had to leave out the Cooler Master hyper 212 until I get paid again, because I was really cutting it close.

Meh, I'd not get a 900 series GPU right now, so many issues surrounding them. 960 has a narrow, 128-bit bus, 970 is suffering from #RAMgate, 970 and 980 are being under-utilized...

Maybe I'll crossfire another 270x.

If I was in the market for a new GPU I'd still get a 970, undoubtedly the best price/performance for any card out there at the moment especially considering AMD still hasn't learned how to make a good driver.

I'll wait until the GTX 1100 or 1200 series before upgrading. My 760 should be good for a few more years, considering how it came out in 2013 and it's still maxing out games.

Are those already confirmed?

No, the next GPU line is gonna be the 1000 series. That's what's confirmed so far. It's gonna also move away from GDDR5 and go to HBM RAM, albeit later than AMD.

Wait, if 1000 series is next, why are you waiting for the 1100 series?

Because my 760 should be still good for a few more generations. I mean, there are still people with GTX 580s.

Good point, and besides, the next series will have new architecture, so hopefully that will mean higher peformance, and maybe Crysis 3 can actually be maxed out at 4k

Intel's HD series is literally satan

@Celli, the best GPU for the price at the moment would probably be the R9 290, it offers very similar performance to the GTX 970 at almost $100 cheaper.

Or just crossfire your current GPU, that would also be very cost-effective.

Talking of GPU's....

I'm needing help :(, I want to run a rather very modded skyrim with 2K (maybe some 4K textures) and run 2 other monitors with it too and i'm thinking of getting a new card, One choice i had was the R9 290 and the Other if it goes down again is the HD 7990, I'll run a setup kinda like this

Dell U2412M 60hz @ 1920X1200 - Games-Big graphic fancy stuff etc

Acer Monitor @ 1366X768 - Monitor for internety stuff/checking the stream chat and art references and such

Acer Monitor @  1366X768 - Same for above but positioned nearer my bed for like a "bed htpc".

troubling question is.....VRam, Is 4GB enough for that setup?, or should i get something with more vram like the 8GB 290X or a 6GB Card?. - or i could in future get a 290 and Crossfire it if it helps? even if the vram doesnt stack

also i need a new headset, my X11's right ear decided to snap and then fall off, want a non expensive headset with Very good sound quality, dont fancy a seperate mic as i'd rather have the simplicity of the headset?.

Playing Dying Light, I'm pegged at 3.5GB to 3.6GB VRAM usage. 1-3 second stutters when I get grabbed by a zombie. Boo. Guess it's a little easier to hit that limit than I thought.

4GB should be fine for 1200p, but if I were you I'd wait and see what AMD has store for the R9 300 Series.

A low cost but very well made headset, I'd highly recommend the Kingston HyperX Cloud.

Just thinking is since my monitor is 60hz and it being a U2412M i'd suit more a quality over FPS thing?.

so the 4GB Vram rather than the 2X3GB of the 7990 would suit way better

290X for sure. More VRAM and none of the headaches associated with waiting on CrossFire profiles, higher power consumption/heat. Powerful single GPU whenever possible.

Even that would have enough to handle the modded skyrim at 60FPS or more (not dipping below) While running the screens? :D

i'm going to have so many freaking dragons :V

If you can, wait for the new boards with more than 4GB to drop since modded Skryim can really eat up VRAM.
