technology The Glorious PC master race thread

PS3 and Xbox 360 actually standardized multi-core design in games and had very good processors for their time, but they had so-so GPUs and within a year or two the PC pulled ahead again. Then there's this generation, where they shipped with terrible processors (they're meant for tablets or low-end business machines, not gaming!) and pretty good GPUs. So now they have the opposite problem.

To be fair, in gaming at least the trend has been shifting performance from the CPU to the GPU. Same reason you'd place greater emphasis on putting a good GPU in your build at the cost of a lesser CPU if you're on that strict budget.

That said, I think more than a few people were disappointed when the rumors of a Bulldozer-derived AMD chip were quashed in favor of the weaker Jaguar. They're really going to have to parallelize the hell out of that thing because 1.6GHz AMD cores aren't going to amount for much on their own (not that they did at 5 GHz either but you know, whatever.)

This build I came across caught my eye because it just felt so unbalanced. What do you guys think?

On topic, I plan to at least get a Wii-U and PS4 when the price drops.

It's certainly far from the worst I've ever seen but this person should probably spend a little more on the CPU, less on the motherboard and 750W is overkill.

Also that SSD sucks for the money.

Nice case, though.

That's kind what I was thinking, they should've got a cheaper PSU, cheaper mechanical HDD, and used the saved money to get a better CPU. SSDs should be reserved for higher budget stuff and a secondary concern once the core-parts are good and there's budget left-over.

Did you make that up or have you actually seen that mess in the wild?

Made it up, I seriously doubt anyone in their right mind would build a PC like that. xD

I dunno, I've seen higher-end i7s paired with 750ti's(and not even a FTW of SC'd edition of the card)

Probably a pre-built. Because they're like that.

True, I once had a laptop that had all kinds bears HD audio shit but a cheap CPU and no dedicated GPU(and it was made to looking like a gaming rig with brushed aluminum case and everything)

Dude, I'm pretty sure that can't get 12FPS in Turbotax, how do you expect it to run GTA V?

See that was the thing, I told the guy at the store, "This isn't gonna work, bruh... I need more SATA ports or my taxes aren't gonna get done."

He told me I was insane and they don't make boards with that many ports. I told him he needed to shut his fucking mouth and make it happen and then he called the cops on me and

I knew it. But apparently that's what gets the police called on you. THIS. COUNTRY.

Going down the drain, I swear.

But what about your taxes????

But what about your taxes????

I received a non-threatening voice mail from the IRS regarding a potential lawsuit unless I supplied them with my social security and bank information, in which case they would take care of everything.

I sure dodged a bullet there. I'm so glad at least SOME parts of our government are still working for the people.

I think some people here could use this reminder.

Also, I've seen some expensive builds so poorly thought out it's taught be budget doesn't me shit. It's knowing how to use what you have that counts.

Actually, I beg to differ on that one.

SSDs are kind of a waste for gaming, but they're the best thing you could have for just general computing. Simple clicky clicky things are so much snappier when you have your OS and programs on an SSD. Overall, it just makes your computer feel more responsive.

It depends on what you're going for, but I would totally skimp on CPU, mobo, ram, and GPU to get a SSD boot drive. SSDs are the one thing that I always see overlooked. For the average user, and probably even gamer, you're better off with a mid-i5 and a 128 or 256 gig SSD than an i7 and a mechanical drive.

I think that's meant to be a gaming PC, though.

SSDs just make everything so much more responsive. Opening several apps at once immediately after I get to the desktop happens right now. I wouldn't build a system without one. Fast boot and load times are just icing on the cake.

I was once able to run Chivalry Medievil Warfare on my brother's Gateway SX. It ended up going smoother than expected because Chivalry is supposed to be on one of the newer Unreal engines.

Imagine what it would be like to make Crysis run on the SX.   :P

Had to break down and pay $128 at Wal-Mart for Windows 8.1, at least it's fixed now.
